Default Syncing Droid and Mac Address Book without using Google sync

Is it possible to sync directly between Mac iCal and Address Book to Android (Motorola Droid) without using intervention from Google sync? (and keeping the information from syncing to Google)

I don't want my contacts and calender lying around in Googles cloud.

Thanks
Ken

wow windows fanboy. did you read his question?

your phone is google based. in order to activate it, you have to have a google account. how does this become an issue with mac? everything on the phone side is based on google so how would you be able to sync without using google?

to CA-Ken, sorry to say it, but the moment you activated your phone, you immediately placed your contacts and calender on a google cloud.

Completely incorrect. you can bypass the google sign in.

then obviously we didnt know that, so why didnt you just say that the first time?

if thats true, then bypassing the google login, he could then use a mobile me account and keep everything synced over the air, or i am sure there are other ways that things can be synced, even down to plugging in the phone on a regular basis.

maybe sometime within the next week or so we can actually help this person with their question.

I thought that was common knowledge o.o

Now there *are* ways to sync locally on windows, although I think the only one that works well is htc sync.

Nah, not common knowledge at all. I myself have only just discovered the bypass trick about two weeks ago.

Could we re-wind just a bit? I am a Mac user and have considered an Android phone, but my understanding is that there is no fool-proof way to sync (TWO WAY sync, please) the Mac's iCal and Address Book with the corresponding Google applications (contacts & calendars), and that third-party software like Missing Sync that claim to do so is both buggy and pricey. *Is* there any way for long-time Mac users like me, with tons of info on iCal and Address Book, to use an Android phone without constant fiddling and frustration? Anyone? (And yes, I know, I *could* just get an iPhone -- but I like having a phone that works, so my mobile service provider is Verizon)

it depends.....the OP wants to do this without using google's services. however, if you dont mind using google's services, you can easily sync your macbook/imac to do this:

address book is as simple as going to preferences in address book, choosing the accounts tab and then choosing "synchronize with google"

ical, you have two different options: you can subscribe to your google calender. very easy to set up, however you have to make your google calender public in order for this to work. some people arent down with. the second option is using CalDAV to setup your google calender with ical. click on the link and it will walk you through.

Vandyblackandgold: Thanks for trying, I appreciate it.

However, making my iCal calendar public is out of the question, and CalDAV (a) doesn't work as indicated (it just hangs and hangs) and (b) only allows an existing Google calendar to be imported into iCal, not the other way around ... so, unless I'm totally off-base here, syncing iCal and Google Calendars just can't be done.

i am a little confused. i just added an event in iCal and it immediately showed up on my droid, in my google calender. i guess i dont understand what you mean? did you try using CalDAV? are you saying when you tried, nothing that was already in iCal showed up?

Well it's taken enormous patience and trying about a zillion different things, but I finally got it working. Feeling grateful to everyone who offered suggestions, helped with this mess. Now that it's working though, it's beautiful ... and was worth it.

I am also trying to sync an Apple Address Book with Google, so I looked for "Synchronize with Google" in my Address Book Preferences and do not find it - only Synchronize with MobileMe, Exhcnage, and Yahoo. Is there another way?

i used the help page in google itself. it was using CALDAV. works well once you configure it.

I'm sorry - I don't understand.... What is "CALDAV"? I have the same problem - I don't see an option to sync with Google in my address book preferences. Please help!

I'm a little confused, what exactly is the problem with storing your contacts and calender in G-mail? I mean, unless you are publicly criticizing a major communist regime (), What exactly do you think google is going to do with your info, start cold calling your friends?

I use both the contacts and calendar features and overlay my calendar with my wife and daughter's, and for me it is one of the selling points of the service. If I wanted it to be locked on my desktop, I would have gotten a blackberry, not an android device.

Last I checked Address Book only displays the 'sync with Google' option if you've connected an iPhone to your Mac (as have done so at least once at some point in the past, rather than having to connect an iPhone every time you want to sync local/cloud). There is a plist file hack to set the flag manually so that it shows up.

I am running Leopard though, so it's entirely possible that in Snow LEopard the feature is universally available without the hack or an iphone.

i believe snow leopard has the sync option. im running snow leopard and i dont have an ipod touch or iphone and i have the sync to google option.

i apologize for my previous post... i thought what was asked was a calendar sync with ical.

but not syncing to google? a manual sync may be possible... but why not just go through google when you have a google phone?

And as everyone knows, AT&T sucks a big one. I have and want to keep my T-Mobile and my Macs.

I don't have Snow Leopard (but I think I'm going to upgrade. $30 is too cheap to pass up for an easy sync option and getting back 6GB of space on my HD) but I know that it DOES have a built in sync option with Google Contacts and Google Calendar.

How does the sync work for you? Is it worth it?

Same as above. I read the thread and the question: How do I sync my Mac address book (not my calendar) with my Android phone without Google has not been answered - at least not in a way that was comprehensible to me.

My reason for wanting to do this: Mac and Google addressbook don't recognize each other's groups. Also: I have a trusted email provider of 15 years and don't want to make my gmail my main email address, so I need to organize my email contacts in Mac and I would like to get those groups into my phone - somehow.

If anybody knows an answer or an app/program that helps with this please respond.

To copy the contacts from Mac Address Book to Android - just export them from Address Book into one file vCards.vcf, copy it to, e.g., SD card (connecting the phone to Mac as USB storage first), then import the contacts into Contacts app on Android.

How to sync the two - is still an open question, as SyncMate didn't seem to work properly.

That method will create Address Book groups on the Google account, consequently your phone.

Accounts preferences in Address Book, sync with Google after that.

If a user doesn't mind putting his Contacts in the Cloud then fine, the original method is nice and simple. For someone like me who does not want to involve the Cloud (aka Google account), I found no substitute for physically copying vCards.vcf file.

Well that's Apple for you. They want you to use ONLY Apple. Their devices are great and all but I want more freedom in my choices.

Anyway, I'd think it would be dependent on the phone you have. Do they have Outlook on Macs? Because Samsung Kies, the official sync software for Samsung (syncs contacts, calendar, media, tasks, etc) has a Mac program. Maybe users can check that out.

I don't think I understand. It doesn't seem to be a Mac/Apple problem. And Google sync works fine - I just can't allow my contacts to be stored in the Cloud (be it iCloud, Google Cloud, or whatever).

I love my wife's iPhone 4S, and my iPod Touch 4, and I enjoy my SGS2 Skyrocket too. I call it "plurality".

Oh yes, there's Outlook 2011 on Mac (and Entourage 2008 and 2004 - bastardized versions of Outlook from Office 2007 and 2003).

Oh yes. there's Kies for Mac (though Samsung seems to have pulled it from their Web site now), there's SyncMate for Mac, and I'm told there's MissedSync for Mac. In my experience, neither Kies nor SyncMate did the initial sync - by which I mean downloading the extensive Contacts set from Mac to Android. No big deal, I did it manually in three simple steps: export the data as one file, copy that file to Android, import it into Contacts there. Perhaps now SyncMate would keep them in sync, we'll see.

I meant, that if you aren't using an Apple device, you'd be looking at work arounds and other weird options to get what you want.

You separated the clauses. Outlook and Kies sync with each other, so what you need is to get your contacts to Entourage and sync to your phone with Kies using that. At least that's how I'd think it work, and I just saw Kies of Mac on the Samsung website?

Ah, then I understand - you meant "if one uses an iPhone with Apple computer then it works smoothly, but trying to connect an Android to Apple is tough". Yes I agree - connecting iPhone through iTunes is trivially simple.

  1. No, Kies and Outlook 2011 do not sync with each other - as I know first-hand because Outlook 2011 is installed on my Mac.
  2. Could you please post the URL to Kies for Mac (and for Windows)?

Thanks!

Oh, I guess its different for the Outlook for Mac versions. Kies synced to Outlook not problems on Windows.

Kies for Mac is right here (top result if type "Kies" in Google Search):
Mobile Phone's Software&Manual SAMSUNG

Lettering is a bit small, but it does say "download Kies (Mac)" and its official Samsung.

Thanks, downloaded their versions for Mac and Win, will experiment with Win later...

Noticed "New PC Studio" over there - do you happen to know what is it good for, compared to Kies?

Thanks

In such case SyncMate is probably the best solution for you - not only it syncs data between Mac and Android directly (without necessity of using Google), it also syncs contacts and calendars for free

Also very keen to know how to do this. It's a pity Starstuff didn't share his/her stuff. A couple of years have passed by since the OP. Have any new ways come to light as a solution to syncing contacts and calendar from a Mac to an android device without sharing everything with Google?
