Hi all, OK today I have picked up my S3 thinking this is the best thing since sliced bread however, I now find I need a method of entering information on 'Word' type files and even Excel if possible?

I have had a HTC TYTN II for the last few years Ihave done most of my work on this old workhorse whilst away from the house, be able to walk in the house and it sync with my laptop (WIN7 MS office 2010) has been great!

Now I need to have a app that mimics MS office and will sync not only with outlook (tasks/contacts/calender) but also update my Word and Excel files, is this possible?

I looked at 'openoffice.org' and there is no mobile version so at a bit of a loss.

I am worried that I should have gone for another mobile that used windows OS and office mobile but just loved the smoothness and overall feel of the S3, have I made an almighty cock up?

Many thanks in advance

Dave

Thanks and a 'clicked' Thanks as well. I can see either of these should be ok, for my Word and Excel, can I assume they will be able to be synced to my laptop in the normal manner? I assume the Outlook sync will need a different app?

Thanks again

Dave

as far as syncing stuff you can always sync with google docs : here's something that can sync the stuff you need Fieldston Software - gSyncit - Sync Outlook and Google Calendars, Contacts, Notes and Tasks

[edit: maybe not that one lol heres another https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.innov8tion.isharesync&hl=en <----- that one should work.]

Well I have decided on Kingston and downloaded the software to my PC, after unpacking to my desktop I sent it to my S3 and found it on the internal storage card under applications! Great, now I cannot get the package to install, no help on the kingston site as it assumes you downloaded direct to the S3.

So, do I delete the whole thing and start over oooooooor.....wait until November the 10th and MS release the OE version of office mobile for Android....whey hey!!!

regards

Dave

Uh, just use Dropbox or Sugarsync for syncing. Basically I set watch folders on my phone, and any file that goes in there or gets edited in there reflects on the PC

As for apps to open Word and Excel files, its already built into the S3 without need to buy anything. Polaris Office is already there.

Thanks for that chan, I have never even heard of them let alone use them! I have seen Polaris but was unsure I could edit anything in there?

Are you saying I already have all the software on the phone and could mimic the functionality I had on the old tytn II and use MS office, open and edit docs, create new docs ect?

Sounds good, I will have a look and see what I can see.

Many thanks

Dave

oh oh, clicked on a notification I had in my profile and was greeted with a startling burst of music!!!! I then find this is linked with a load of garbage at the top of the screen in Spanish!!! Why oh why do forums that use adds assume because you are in spain that you speak spanish?

I have shedloads of friends that are actively moving away from ANY sites that do this as I will.

Please tell me that there is a way to stop this rediculous practice afflicting my enjoyment of what appears (in the early days) as a good site with some knowledgeable contributors.

Many thanks

Dave

There are some office applications in the play store that can open microsoft office files and make basic edits to them. If you are constantly in need of this, you might be better off just switching all your documents to google documents which is now part of Google Drive. Drive will allow you to view, edit, and do whatever you need to with all documents, while keeping everything synced between PC and mobile, and saved in the cloud.

Yes, samsung bundles the office app in their phones already. As for dropbox and sugarsync, you just sign up for their service and install it on your phone and pc. Basically what happens is that a certain folder of your choosing is cloned between the devices. Any edit to a document you make inside that folder or any new document you put in there, shows up on the related folder on your pc. Sync is done over an internet connection.

Google Drive will also let you do this but in a slightly different manner.

OK got it now, I notice that my laptop 'sees' the S3 as another hard drive something the TYTN did not do. I am simply copying files from one drive to another right? Polaris is the 'translator' I guess.

I did not want to rely on an internet connection as the service can be a bit 'patchy' to say the least. I will rely on either WiFi assuming one device will speak to the other?

If not then it will have to be Bluetooth or USB cable but I do not want to go backwards if you know what I mean?

Other than that it seem to be pretty straightforward, there are some odd things that happen, I did not know that tapping the top of the S3 moves lists to the top, clever stuff!

Thanks again all, I will check back every few days to see if any other ideas come up.

regards

Dave
