Hi there,

Am just wondering if it is possible to sync a Gmail account's Calendar and Contacts without setting up the email. I know you can uncheck the box that syncs email but I want to go further and not set it up (but still need calendar and contacts sync).

The iPhone allows you to do this and I've recently gone back to an old iPhone 3Gs from my Samsung Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean despite preferring Android over iOS purely because I'm trying to wean myself off work email (it's my business) and don't completely trust myself to have the discipline not to open email during evenings and weekends and have it sync as I do so.

Not setting it up at all like on the iPhone has made me feel better though I prefer Android and wondered if I could this there than have to use an iPhone, which, truth be told, I don't really like. I hate what iOS does with contacts.

Not sure what you mean. Are you saying you don't want to login to your GMail account in the initial setup? I don't think that's possible unless you use a different method to sync. iPhones use an Exchange server to sync to Google, which is why you can sync to Calendar or Contacts separately from Email.

You'd have to manually set up an Exchange sync for what you want, much like how you would set it up on an iPhone.

You have to use your gmail email to sign into your phone. However, if you uncheck sync email the Google accounts and sync it should not download any emails. Also, in the generic email app do not setup any accounts in it.
