Default crash - files missing, no recovery software working

Something happened where all my text msgs got deleted. The screen went black for a split second and they were all gone. Then, I discover that all my voice recordings, months worth of important documentation, are all gone. In fact the entire folder for voice recording is gone and the voice recording app says "unable to access sd card". So I removed the card, hooked it up to PC and tried 3 or 4 different recovery programs on it and none of them find any of the *.amr files. There were several hundred MB or even GB of recordings that have just vanished. There's no way I could have overwritten the files in a couple days' time. I tried Recuva, PC Inspector File Recovery, and a couple others. How could these files just be forever gone, even from recovery software? Can I get them back?
