Default Tablet Suitable for Toddler?

I have a Nexus7 and my 2 and half year old has fallen in love with it. It is only a matter of time before he smashes it, so I thought I would try and find a kid proof one, so toughened, protected glass, maybe with some kids apps, but that's not to vital.

I want access to the Play Store on it too, and YouTube but can't find anything that fits the bill and has good reviews:

Any ideas welcome....thanks

The Nabi 2 could be worth looking at, that's designed for kids. Only thing is, it currently doesn't have Google Play, it has the Amazon app store instead, and it also has YouTube.

Most general usage tablets have glass fronts, except the cheapo Chinese ones.

Mashable recently done a review of some tablets intended for kids.

many thanks - I will check it out.

May be a dumb question, but is the Nabi2 not Android? I assumed Android all had Google store...?

It is still the Android OS underneath, just doesn't have the Google Play Store. A lot of the off-brand tablets don't have access to the Play Store either.

My youngest loves my N7, I do get nervous about him playing it, but he seems to do ok with it. The lego app, and a couple kids puzzle games are his favorite, along with netflix/kids.

You could always look into maybe getting a case that wraps around the device, and getting a screen protector.

Even if it doesn't have native Google Play support, you may be able to add it. I bought a cheap-o Chinese tablet that doesn't have native support for it, Facebook or Youtube but I was able to add them by side-loading the APKs.

Thanks. Some of those kids ones look good, but they are very expensive, so not sure about whether to take the risk....he might refuse to play with them as he likes the Nexus.....

If I had kids, they wouldn't be getting such a device especially at that age. The reason why is gaming, gadgets and computers can be highly addictive. Maybe set strict time limits as to how long the child is on it. Too many kids sit indoors with technology and some never go out and play outside leading to weight gain amongst other problems...

Agree with Satires. Get your kid an Etch-a-Sketch and your kid will develop creativity and dexterity.

I agree that gadgets can be addictive and he has started to get upset when it is taken away, so I am now trying to stop him having it in the first place. As for weight gain, again, I understand the point, but would not happen in my family as we eat well and play sports.

However, there has also been a learning experience for him using the tablet and I don't want to entirely rule that out either. He is 2 and a half and I have seen him evolve his behavior faster using some apps than with many toys.

Just a quick point here, the OP is asking for tablet advice, not parenting advice.
