Default Switch accounts/numbers on same phone

Is it possible to keep my existing phone, but to abandon my account it's registered to along with the phone number and get a new account/phone number in it's place?
I ask because I upgraded from an Optimus Elite to Evo V 4G and transferred my number and account. It caused issues with the phone. The tech support guy claims it's because it's receiving data from two places at once and that this would happen since the previous and new phone are very different designs.
They want to send me a replacement to activate with a new account and number, which I didn't want, because I'm against the whole refurbished item being someone elses broken and repaired phone, no matter how good of condition it's in... especially when I complained about this after my phone was only slightly over 2 days old. I activated it Thursday night. Friday it was fine. Saturday the problems started and complained. No mail on Sunday. But today (Monday) I find an email saying the replacement phone I didn't want has been shipped at 12pm, even though I told them no.
So I'm thinking of sending this most likely refurbished phone back to them with a letter.
But I need to know if I can reset my phone to factory settings and remove it from the current account and start over completely with it with a new number and account as if I just bought it.
And how would I go about it if it's possible?

Hi Shane, and welcome to AF

I guess you are using a CDMA handset, as there would be no issue with GSM. It might help if you say what network, just in case it makes a difference.

Afraid there's no CDMA networks where I am, so I have no experience of this myself.
