Default What's the point of a 1080p display?

I don't understand this. Aren't many 720p smartphone displays already close to the supposed "retina", or that they have the maximum PPI your eyes can detect? What's the point of having something with a higher resolution?

Maybe it's just me, but it just seems like a gimmick and a battery draining "feature" than anything. Although, if anyone can explain to me why a 1080p display on a 5" smartphone is worth it, I'd love to hear it.

You are sort of correct but not compleatly. Can you or I tell the diff between 720 vs 1080 on a 5" screen? Maybe not. Scaling (interpolation) could be an issue either way and higher native generally scales down better than scaling up. That said not really alot of 1080 needed so 720 would do fine. Consider everyone who buys a 1080p HD TV is watching sports at 720p, so if full screen scaling is going on. 1080p is not a broadcast standard. No one seems to bitch.

On battery drain a little ahead of the curve but I suspect overall area is more important than resolution.

So like I said you are correct kind of. I am fine with my 720 but I might go for 1080 on my next.

I can barely tell a difference on a television, let alone a phone. It's all about bragging rights IMO.

Unless it's a phone with a ridiculously sized screen, a higher resolution than 720p won't be worth the additional battery power required to power such a display.

Although, im sure that's the exact same thing they said about 800x400 phone resolutions. "Why would you ever need it to be higher than that?"

What is the point of quad core? What is the point of 13Mp camera when the sensor is so small?
What is the point of 32gb of storage?

To store 500 songs, and a dozen+ movies in the case of the last question?

If you can't see a difference in pixelation between a 720p and 1080p phone screen without magnification, then you're gaining nothing (chances are you can't). In fact, it's a waste of memory bandwidth, vram, and battery capacity to drive a display with a pixel density like that. I personally think energy efficiency, color accuracy, and visibility in sunlight are more desirable attributes than the ppi world record.

Apples and oranges. Hard drive space is a real world use, in that you can actually use it. You can't actually "use" a larger display because you can barely tell the difference. And for those saying so you can have 1080p output, why not just have 1080p output on a 720p screen? You can put in a graphics card that can handle it, but save battery life with a 720p screen.

Bairly tell the diffrance means there is a diffrence to be told, however small it may be. And side by side with a 720 display I can tell. I also have excellent vision, above avrage. And i have watched 1080p movies and 720p movies on the device and can again see the difference. It is a small difrence but its their and I love it.

If you dont then thats cool. If you dont see the point then dont spend your money on it.

If somthing can be done, rest assured someone will do it, even if its totaly pointless to you. They may see a point.

I mean whats the point of smashing together atomic particals? Whats the point of building carbon nanotubes? Whats the point in making electronic trees? Theirs always a point and a reason to do anything done to somebody.

Ok how about under my noraml usage, which is usaly 1.5 full length movies on youtube and/or a local video. Plenty of ingress, android irc with the screen on always when its in view. 4 forums and reading whats new on about 20 boards and in general just new stuff. Google + and some random search and school stuff. With the screen set to the highest mode, not next to highest as it is defaulted. In 10 hours I normaly have 20-40% left

We certainly don't need 1080p on 5" displays but it will make the IQ image sharper so why not?

I think the main reason is to put the final nail in Apples "retina" coffin.

On that note, who needs a smartphone, who needs a car, who needs anything other than food and shelter?

Heck I want a 16 core, 4tb, 2160p, 7inch, everyband, lte, usb hub, multi sim, multi sdcard, phone with a slide keyboard, a slide game pad, and ps3 remote play linkable, with tegra sheild, streamability for pc games.

Overkill? I think not, but your opinion milage may vary.

720p ought to be enough for anyone, just like 640K right?
