How do I update my firmware? I'm a complete noob to this & am not a developer or anything, so if anybody's kind of enough to give step-by-step instructions for dummies it would be appreciated.

If you're running a stock phone (as I expect you are), you don't need to do anything really.
When an update is made available you'll get a popup notification asking if you want to install. When you confirm, the phone will reboot, install the update and be ready for use.
Note that it's worthwhile to plug your phone into the mains to charge when installing an update.
You can check if an update is available by using the Settings - About Phone - System updates menu options (accessed through the Menu button on the home screen or the Settings application).
Simple and hassle free - not like the bad old days of special cables, dodgy software and a laptop

When i bought mine it must have been pre-cupcake, first time i turned it on it did a big update (HTC Magic)
Heykuro on xda forums said that donut wasn't happening anymore a couple months ago so I don't know if anything has changed yet. But they seem the people in the development know.
Good find - I read about gestures but this is the first I've seen the implementation described. I like the idea of drawing a letter onscreen to start a search for all items starting with that letter. It will be extremely slick if they manage to do it without having to run an app first! However, I suspect this is why the new generation of Android phones includes a search button... Another suggestion would be for the user to begin a gesture search by running two fingers across the screen. It would let Google test the multitouch waters without being something too similar to Apple.
Article says August. I predict September. There's less heavy lifting stuff to fix in the kernel this time so it may be sooner, but this week's rumor is that new Motorola phone(s) could appear by the end of September. Seems a good time to bring Donuts to the party!
Im a complete noob to the HTC stuff. Coming from a long history of blackberry and theme designing, but why does it seem like everything for HTC is named after food? Cupcake...Donut? this phone makes me hungry lol. Anyone care to tell me what cupcake and donut are all about? Im trying to learn this phone inside and out like I did with blackberries, but HTC seems a little more complicated, however my Magic is killing my Bold. So thats a plus!

GeoUSA - what do you mean "I suspect this is why the new generation of Android phones includes a search button"? All android phones that have been made have a search button already. Are you blind? Anyway, the multi-touch thing is a good idea. I would like to see that. Only problem is that it would remind me of the HP tx2z haha. I suppose only table users would know what I'm talking about though..
Bkbram - it has nothing to do with htc. Htc is just one of many companies who make or are going to make android phones(Samsung, Motorola, LG). Cupcake and donut are names that Google uses for their versions of android. Cupcake has already been released. Donut, eclair and flan are all coming, hopefully soon.

lol. Maybe. I never think of the G1's search button because it's on the hidden physical keyboard. New designs are adding a search button on the front of the phone.
I guess another idea for the G1 if the 2 finger swipe is not available, is to designate a long press on the trackball to start search.
