Run su in the shell to get root first. Then, unless pwd is already /, it's /system, not system.

Hi Grayrage, I moved your thread to the Android Lounge which is for discussing Android related topics

If you prefer, you can reply with your phone model and I can move this to a forum dedicated to your phone for a more focused response.

What file explorer are you using mate?
I recommend ES File Explorer.
If you use ES, hit the icon at the top left of the screen then hit "tools" and turn on root explorer and grant SU when prompted

+1 to ES

Most of the time if your on a stock rom, you'll need to a 3rd party file Explorer to access the root directory.

Thanks that's what I needed. ES File Explorer works great. Any idea on how to access the system files when connected to the PC though?

That I don't believe is possible.

I've searched that for a while but you can only access what's on your internal/external memory. Not root directory unfortunately.

The only way to do it would be through using adb. You can use adb shell to access the filesystem, change permissions, move files, etc; use adb push/pull to transfer files to/from the device.
