Pretty simple to do actually. Go into your contacts and select one that you want to have a different ringtone. Press menu and then edit contact. Then under other information there's a dropdown menu that allows you to change the ringtone for that contact. Repeat as necessary for all contacts to have their own personal ring. Hope that helps.

Before you guys get the OPs hopes up, they are looking to change the Notification ringtone; sms, mms, etc... Not the actual ringtone for when the receive a phone call from the person. Unless I missed something, I do not believe this can be done.
Yeah, I think that's what they were asking for, and I don't think the phone is setup for this.
I had a phone that did this, but all it did was use the same ringtone you assigned to the contact. It was actually really frustrating because I'd go to answer my phone like it was a call and it's a text message. Or I'd think "oh, that' just a text" and the person was calling me. I learned that if you waited it would only "ring" once for a notification, but, some of my ringtones were long enough that I would not find out it was a real call in enough time to actually answer it.

well i think we are talking about two separate things here .... notification alerts for sms, voice mail, email as opposed to ringtones assignable to a phone contact. The notifications I believe are one thing and are limited .. but ringtones can be almost unlimited and can be generated or purchased, you can edit music clips, make your own recordings and save them as ringtones ... I have a few of my contacts record their own voice and then I make that their individual ringtone, Others I have recorded in my own voice as like : "Hello, this is Bob H. calling answer his call Please" and then just use them as the specific ringtone for that one individual ... works great ....

its a system thing too.. as far as i can tell, program developers are helpless in helping to help you help the problem. o.o

I think "we" might be a bit pompous, in saying no one reads carefully ... in that some of us do not consider a notification alert as a ringtone... and as I said previously..... or maybe you didnt read by response closely ???

HTC .... not even thinking about a fight ... just stating fact ... and When I read your original message you said "lol you guys all fail" ... and that was not exclusive put quite inclusive and therefor what you wrote did Include "All" the people ... so I think punkzanyi and I can accept your correction and retraction... But we still want more from our G1's ... When do we want it ? "We Want It NOW !!!" ... of course because we are anxious and impatient G1ers .
I was about to say: "what are you talking about, i did not say you guys all fail", then i scrolled up and saw that i did say that. damn it.
but see now you're including ME in your inclusive statement that we are all anxious and impatient. I'm as patient as a patient in a hospital that has time to be patiently chillin with the other patients. rofflewaffles.
Discussion ended. make me your king.

Actually had not thought about being so presumptious to include you HTC ... the "we" was more so referring to rest of the "all"

just in case someone actually wanted an answer, there is an APP that lets you do this, it's called Ringo. I actually use just that to set my call ringtones and my SMS/MMS notification sounds. Works very well.

Agreed I love it. I even have different sounds for the same person's sms or phone call with Ringo. And using Ringroid you can make the sounds from any mp3 on your phone. It's a lot of fun.
One thing it doesn't solve, when a family shares a phone number of a landline it doesn't always know who is calling. I have for example both people as contacts and when the phone rings the phone doesn't always pick the same person's ringtone though the number is the same.
in message settings how do you put it in silent. i need it for my ringo lite. but i can't find a silent selection. rings extended doesn't work in my hero. but in magic rings extended comes out. thanks
The way it works on my Android 2.2 (FRF91) Nexus-1
1. Go to Contacts
2. Select a contact
3. Click the Menu button
4. Click Options (there's your X factor right there!)
5. Go ahead and select a custom ringtone.
Voila

Is there a way to do the same thing for text message tones - not just ringtones?

How about assigning each individual contact a photo? forget it its called phone face

Somebody above posted the right answer, but it got buried in the noise, so I'll repeat, in hopes that somebody sees this:
DO NOT USE 'EDIT CONTACT' -- instead, select the contact, press the menu button, and select OPTIONS, then choose a ringtone for just that user (Again, this is a ringtone only, not a Notification sound.) Works for me on Android 2.3 - YMMV

Reason: expanded on original answer
so, following the advice on this thread, i was able to use Ringo Lite to change both my ringtones and my notifications (for sms, mms, ect) for EACH contact; and instead of paying for the pro version which allows you to set mp3 ringtones, i used ringdroid to creat my own ringtones/notifications and ringo lite allowed me to set those for each contact. and yes, i can have different sounds for when each contact phones me OR messages me
* Setup different ringtones and vibration patterns for Gmail, SMS and MMS for each contact
* Announce (speak) incoming caller, Gmail, and SMS/MMS sender
* Define different volume/vibration profiles
* Setup contact-specific vibration patterns
* Profile scheduling
* Assign VIP contacts for phone calls, Gmail, SMS and MMS
* Allow VIPs to ring if phone is on Silent
* Two Profile Widgets (Select / Toggle)
* Facebook Integration. Option to update status upon profile change (manual or automatic)
* Block unknown callers
* Unknown caller ringtone
* Unknown caller vibration pattern
* Tasker and Locale plug-in for profile switching
I particularly like using the VIP feature so important callers get through even when my phone is on silent/vibrate.
I just got ringtones to work on my droid Samsung i500 Galaxy S. I created 30 second sections of songs(mp3) and saved them to a file I made on my pc called Ringtones. Then connected the phone to the pc thru usb. Once I saw the phone on my pc, I created a new file on the mini sd called ringtones and I dragged them all over to the new file on the phone.
Now comes the trick. If all your contacts are saved as gmail, you're in for a disappointment. There's no option to assign a different ringtone per name. However, just open your contacts, create new and save to phone(not gmail), and type the person's name exactly as you already have it saved in contacts. Then scroll down and you'll see ringtone. Click it, pick what song you want to assign and save. The droid will link it and you'll only see the one name in your contact list. Works great.
OK so I read all the way through this thread and I still can't do this. I have a new Droid X thru Verizon. Can someone give me the instructions to walk thru this and tell me exactly which button to push. When someone says menu, which button is that?? I am a NEW user and am still struggling to figure stuff out so please have patience with me. I am a smart individual and am sure the phone is capable of doing lots of things, I just can't figure out how. LOL
I downloaded a mp3 ringtone.
I made the ringtone folder
I copied the ringtone to the folder
I selected the contact and added the ringtone and it worked, but it can barely be heard.
The oem ringtones are loud, but not the one I put in.
What am I doing wrong?
Device(s): LG Optimus V, CWM Recovery, CM7.2 BACKside IHO

HELP!!!
menu key on android handsets is typically next to the home key(looks loike a house)
For those of you wanting different sms notifications for individual contacts, head to the market and download chomp sms or handcent sms. those will allow you to set individual notificstions for contacts. Just remember to turn off the stock notifications once you start using a third party messaging app
Go to Music App, locate the song that you want and then start to play it. Then press menu and there is an option to set as ringtone, when you click this it should then pop up another menu, which says All contacts or single contact (Or similar). Otherwise, have a fight on a forum website about it...

For some reason, this ability to set an MP3 to ringtone is recently no longer functioning. When I go through the steps as mentioned, the choice for Ringtone is not available. Have I deleted an onboard App or disabled some function unknowingly? Any input appreciated. THanks
General 714 is the only one listening. While playing an MP3 tap SETTINGS, MORE, SET AS RINGTONE, CONTACT RINGTONE, choose a contact. If you have set a different (non-default) ringtone for this contact you will need to change the ringtone back to DEFAULT. Works on my HTC Sensation.
I'm using CyanogenMod 7. After reading (most) all of this, and trying a couple of things, I think I've got it:
Contacts >> select a contact >> Menu
Do NOT select "Edit" - ringtones are not there (they were formerly, right? no?)
Select OPTIONS >> Ringtone
The list presented is, of course, the system-installed tones, plus any which have been added to the "ringtones" directory on the SD card. So, use whatever tool suits you to make a ringtone, put it in that directory, and use the above steps to assign it to a contact. Hooray!
well i still cant figure it out. i want to set each person up with a different notifications sound (TEXT MESSAGE SOUND!!!) i have figured out how to give everyone a different ringtone for incoming calls. and i have made a notification sound but cant seem to connect the dots to make it different for each person!! I have the Motorola Atrix by the way...
By the way you can also set a ringtone for each group. Phone, drag accross to groups. Press & hold a group, then Edit Group. You get a dilog where you can change the name but also change the ringtone for that group. I have a different ringtine for business contacts compared to friends etc. Don't know how this interacts with individual contact ring tones - I image the individual would have preference?
This is one of the few things i miss about my BlackBerry Storm
I have a Verizon Droid2. I get so many emails that this one feature would make life bearable with a smart phone. It was native to the BlackBerry Storm and is one of only 2 features I miss.
I will try the Ringo App.
But it seems like it should be pretty simple to set a different notification per (email) Account on a Droid...if they wanted to address it.
Now on my 2nd Android phone with 2.1, 2.2, & now 2.3, and the whole issue with custom contact-based voice, SMS, & especially email ringtones has been a bit of a thing of mine. Here's what I've found over the last 18 mos. General: create an "audio" subfolder and, under that, "ringtones", "notifications" & "alarms" (this seems to help various apps "recognize" what files to display as options). I've had success with ogg, wav & mp3, though now I stick to mp3 as it's just more consistent and easier to make your own (Ringdroid's also good). Voice: even native contacts app lets you set custom ringtone for each contact. Note-don't know if this is just for mp3's, but they can't be >300k if using native app. SMS: I use Handcent SMS and it's just as easy. App support shows you how. Email: This is the one that's always eluded me. No easy way to do it. Native email app only does custom notifications by account, not by contact. Have not figured out Tasker yet, so the only way that's ever worked for me is to use an email client that has a rules capability to filter incoming emails and perform an action. This is more & more cumbersome the more specific/customized you want your notifications since each needs its own rule and order in the list usually matters in terms of priority. Nowhere near as easy as with BBerry. Touchdown does this best IMHO; I think MailDroid and Mail Alert will (have not tried). Maybe others that I don't know of. Downside of Touchdown is that it doesn't synch/apply rules for multiple accounts simultaneously; you have to manually switch between/among them. That doesn't work well with me since I have 2 business accounts I can't afford to toggle between. Hope this helps.
