My phone just randomly shut down yesterday night and rebooted and when it started back up it said preparing my sd card I didnt think anything of it...well the nxt morning when I woke up to my phone ringing with the standard us cellular ringtone. When I looked thru my phone everything but a few random pics were there I took it out and put it back in and now it says it damaged and nothing is there!! How the hell did this happen??? Is there anything I can do???

I highly doubt the phone erased the sd card. If anything, it may have just been a bad card.

Try taking the card out and putting it directly into a card reader for a computer, and see if the files are there. If not, then it's likely you have a bad card. Always remember to back up important data, so when things like this happen, you have a backup.

What makes the card go bad..had it with the old phone and new one (both samsung acclaim) and never had probs with it before. I did check it out on the comp and just the few random pics show up on the comp...so how do I back it up? And should I continue using the same card cause its working fine now or should I get a new one?

A lot of factors, heat, damage, dropping it, etc.

So it obviously has been used for a while, an old card is likely to fail.

Well you obviously can't backup everything after the card is bad. Backing up is preventative maintenance, it needs to be done before something happens.

The files that you can see on the card, just drag them off the card onto somewhere on your computer.

Well you said you could only see random files, meaning the card probably still isnt working correctly. And whether or not to re-use it is your decision. Keep in mind, if it failed once, it will fail again. It all depends on how important your data is. Personally, I would spend 20 bucks and buy a new one, to insure my data is safer.

Connect the card to PC with a card reader
Use mini tool partition Wizard and Do a Surface test on SD card
If you get no errors ,you can continue to use the card. For now.
If you do then it is best to have it replaced
