Question Custom Notifications for Different Event Types

I want different notifications for different events, e.g. for SMS I want one sound and vibrate function, for YMail and GMail I want a different sound and no vibrate.

I tried Rings Extended, but that just takes the existing settings a step further by allowing music or sounds to be added. It doesn't distinguish between different events.

Any ideas?

SMS -- in the default messaging app you can set up whatever kind of notification you want. It's in the settings for the default messaging app.

Gmail -- Same as SMS, you can set up custom notification. It's in the settings menu for gmail.

Ymail - Check the settings for whatever program you're using to access Ymail. I use K-9 and it allows you to set your own notification.

The Sound files are in locked directories that are part of the OS Build so what is there is there ... So to add sounds or notifiactions, rings etc to any of the four groups ..this is done on the sdcard ... as a second advantage this uses no phone memory which is limited and sound files grow large quickly

you don't have to use rings extended. I don't have it. You just have to set up the right folders in the main directory. On your SD Card set up 3 folders spelled exactly like this (no capitals, no spaces)

ringtones

alarms

notifications

Now, any .wav, .mp3, (and I believe .ogg) files that you drop into these folders will be added to the respective lists of choices once you have disconnected your phone from your computer. These folders have the additional benefit of being "invisible" to the music player (so ringtones don't get added to your phone library as "music").

the solution from punkzanyj works. After creating those folders (actually I renamed the folder with all my ringtones) and restarting my magic, the ringtones files not showing on my song list anymore. Cheers

There is one other directory you can add and that is UI

Get Ringroid! It is awesome. The super easy to use editor lets you select that "best" part of the sound/song and set it for alerts.

My default sms is the first few notes of "Shake a tailfeather." It's really sweet to be able to edit the audio right on the phone.

I saw a iPhone 3GS edit video on the phone and I hope that comes next for us too.

Me too, way easier to get exactly what I want, and even do more advanced editing.

cant really find any other post that have my issue, so ill post here...

ive done everything you guys have said, even before i signed up for this site:

made the "notification" folder
tried mp3/ogg
tired ringdroid
rebooted
removed battery

nothing has worked.

sorry, the problem im having is that my custom sounds wont play when their supposed to. i have it set as the not. sound and they play when i preview them, but doesn't when i actually get a not. it goes back to the "droid" sound...

could it be the bit rate? ive tried about 5 different combos with bitrates/stereo/mono

if any one can help me, ill make them some custom tones...mine sound like soundwave from the transformers cartoon:

"R7 has received incoming text notification"

and

"R7 is recieveing mobile voice communication from...identifing: jade"

R7 = my droid's name (tribute to R2D2 and 7 costanza)
jade = my sister.

it worked long enough for two of my friends with iphones to hear that and crap their pants.

cheers

What about Ringo Lite. Make the tone with Ringroid then apply with with Ringo Lite. You can make a contact's SMS and Phone call have two different ringtones.

I like creating a short version of the tone for the SMS and a longer version for the ringtone of the same song for each person.

Don't know if this is right place for this but it is THE closest thing to my question so i will add it on to here.
I have a droid eris and i need to know if there IS an app that will allow for customization to have a specific ringtone for calls, and a different one for SMS and MMS for a single contact?
Example: My wife calls me and it has an MP3 of a song she likes announcing to me its her, if she texts me its a specific soundbyte telling me its her and not someone i care little about.. I had a blackberry (hated it) but loved it for being able to do this. So far i cannot differentiate my wife and others from each other with anything stock on the phone or an app I might have tried.. I have tried tonepicker and dgalert classic. ANY help one way or the other will be greatly appreciated... Thanks.....
Oh and to the owners of this site,,, GREAT JOB....

I read about adding custom SMS ringtones. I got my inch, now I want a mile. Does anybody know how to setup SMS ringtones for individuals? On my Storm 1 there is a feature called contact alerts where I could setup unique ringtones for phone calls and SMS based on specific people (person A gets SMS tone B, person C gets ringtone D, etc.)

Help!

for those of us who are extremly OCD and like things to be cut an edited very clean or want to make a mp3/wav/pretty much any type of audiofile from any portion of media i found an AWESOME program that i have been using for a while to make my ringtones, better yet the FREE version works great, you can pay for the upgraded version but for just making ringtones or sound files from any audio source the FREE one works great

WavePad - Professional Audio Editing Software for Windows, Mac OS X & Pocket PC

It gives you the full version for a while then askes you if you would like to pay or continue to use a slimed down free one, the free one still has everything i use,i use it on my pc because you can zoom in really far so you get the EXACT start and end point you want

BTW i am in no way affiliated with them just love the free program

Default more sound editing questions

There has been lots of really good info here so far. But all the questions about custom sounds have been for rather standard things like certain emails, or notifiers... And i have googled and bing'ed this issue all over the place and still cannot find an answer, to which:

How does one edit the sounds associated with key presses, lock presses, and other mundane OS events?

And preferably without installing YET ANOTHER app.. Android seems to be a very extensible and flexible OS yet i cannot find any way to change these sounds. And constantly adding app upon app to do every little thing seems very inefficient.

If changing these sounds is possible, does it require rooting? I have been holding off on doing so, so far, but if need be i will do so..

I'm sorry if this issue has been answered already, if it has, please linky.

On a related note, is there a way to keep the "home/back/search/context" buttons lit? they turn off too soon. (LG THRIVE, OS v2.2.2)

thank you
