Default just interested in voice dictation/recognition/speech to text features and recording ...

Hardware supporting for smartphones' microphones may (most probably) be the same since they are just part of the actual physical phone.
Android 4.2, Jelly Bean, is based on (an altered) Linux kernel 3.0.31 and 4.0.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on 3.0.1 ... and the OS in mobile devices is tightly integrated with the hardware, but I still wonder about what would entail (pros, cons, issues, ...) upgrading the kernel/Android so that you could avail yourself of the new voice features in Jelly Bean
How could compatible devices be upgraded to Android Jelly Bean 4.2?
Any ideas or leads about how to go about such issues?
