Default Rumor: Honeycomb to Require Dual-Core Processor, Hi-Def Resolution

New reports from OEMs who have been building tablets to spec for Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) state that there will indeed be a set of minimum requirements that must be met: the devices will need to have a dual-core processor (based on the Cortex-A9 architecture, which NVIDIA’s widely-used Tegra 2 chipset is), and the display will [...]

I agree total stupidity no way that the nexus phones would be unable to upgrade to honeycomb so this rumor is garbage

If Froyo could be ran on the G1 (and likely Gingerbread as well) even if Google stopped supporting it, what makes you think Google would just kick every known existing handset and current tablets to the ground? I think this Cha guy is talking out his ass. The Gingerbread minimum specs never came true and I don't think for a second that these Honeycomb specs are either. Phandroid needs to stop reporting this fluff. It makes this place look like the National Enquirer or Sun. I would like carriers to start moving their processors forward, but Google doing something proactive like that would only be shooting themselves in the foot.

Look, the day is coming where some version of Android simply won't work on the old hardware.

It's not if, it's when.

Google would approach it with gradualism as opposed to major leap like that. For tablets, which naturally cost more and are considered more of a luxury purchase than a phone, this spec requirement could be realistic. However, I don't see that as happening for phones. The ability to get cheap, easy to use smartphones for entry level consumers is a huge boon to Google. I would only assume they'll fork the development, but that also would be bad.

Obviously as technology reduces in price while increasing in capability we'll see better phones, but this rumor is automatically going to get transferred to the phone end (even if it is for tablets only) and then you'll see a bunch of topics for it. To me reporting about new phones or features seem reasonable, but planned obsolescence (which is fairly common in this market) seems abrupt to say the least.

Given that most Android phone users aren't even at 2.2 yet, I don't see this as terribly abrupt - if it's true, and I don't know if it is or not.

IF it's true that H is 2-core only and they renamed GB as Android mobile and H as Android tablet and continued to update each, everyone would be probably happy.

Truth is - if H is 2-core only, that's what's going to happen without the re-name and people will be upset.

Perception != reality
