I wonder if this helped the 3G network. My reception has been much better the past few weeks inside my office in midtown Manhattan. Calls and text just work now.

Calls and text are not part of 3g or the hyped 4g.
These are part of the basic carrier signal.
So if you are getting better calls & texts probably it is just a new cell tower opening.
