I don't think t-mobile would tell their call center people about an update until google announces it.

the names a bit odd though, perhaps the next one will be called oreo cheesecake and contain an update for apps on the card.

This update is still in development. Until it's ready for release, TMO won't know/talk about it.

Why is it called cupcake? Please don't tell me because the update is SWEET... that's just a bad joke.

Google does quirky things like this in regards to naming their developments.
In regards to flash, I think there's going to need to be some integrations involved with the Webkit browser, so flash will ultimately come from adobe via google g1 update i think.

there's that, but it's also true that companies sometimes come up with a concept, and begin working on it without a name. They give it some sort of ambiguous development name so that it can be referenced internally for simplicity, leaving room for marketing/
PR to come up with the final name of the product. Names are also changed because the original/popular name didn't test well with focus groups.

It'll be part of cupcake. This is NOT an application. It's an OS update.

That's not true, they never gave a date.
The full story is that "Cupcake" is not an update. "Cupcake" is a development branch that is working on updates and new features. As those features become tested and available they will be added to routine updates. There isn't a "Cupcake" update, but rather future updates will have features that the Cupcake Dev team has worked on.

I have been schooled. From all the hype I heard I thought it was gonna be an almighty OTA stream that was gonna make my phone cook me dinner and take out the trash.
