I don't know. Eight months after its release and competitors are still trying to beat the iPhone 3Gs in terms of hardware performance. That's a long time for some technology to stay on top. I have every reason to want Android to overtake iPhone, and I will not buy an iPhone no matter what carrier, but iPhone 3Gs has kicked ass for a loooong time.

Make android a non-multitasking platform then see what happens...it's an unfair comparison IMO.

Well first off, there are far more iPhone users than Droid users or even Android users for that matter (for the time being). So a poll like this will be skewed from the get go.
Secondly, being able to run 3rd party apps and widges, to easily switch between several running apps, and to run almost any app without rooting, make Android the superior OS in my book.
Also several members of one of the 'other' forums were keeping tabs on the voting, and all of a sudden (overnight) 2000 or so votes showed up on the iPhone poll pushing it way ahead so vote fixing is not out of the question. Same happened with the ZuneHD, it was ahead by a decent amount then all of a sudden the iPhone is way ahead. Yeah I know there are far more iPhone users, but something was still kind of fishy about the whole thing. So just another reason to pay little mind to such a poll.

You forget there are like 3 million loyal iphone users that hasnt used another phone since the iphones release in a while. So they've never had an Android phone and dont quiet no the advantages to having one. They are quiet happy with thier iPhone because they dont know any better basically. Do an experiment and go play with you Droid or Nexus one in front of a person with an iPhone and watch what happens.

Engadget has been biased towards Apple for the longest time. Sometimes I think Apple pays them for it.

the only reason iphone is still "on top" is because the owners of the phone will vote for the phone they have...notice how close the droid is on those charts though...THAT tells you something. The droid has been out for what? a few months and its only a few percentage points below the iphone?

We have a couple threads about this in the Droid forum. Engadget is chock full of Apple fanboys. I wouldn't expect the Droid to win at all, much less be in the running. I'm kind of shocked we've gotten it this far.

Looking over their poll questions it seems odd that IF apple is on the list it's leading by miles with 3 exeptions. 1.Device of the year 2. best smart phone of the year. And lastly it wasn't voted 3. best console of the year....WTF? Console? And the Droid didn't make the console list.
Interestingly Droid holds best GPS of the year with %50 of the votes.

Droid was my nomination in a lot of the categories there (I use the same avatar on Engadget) but last time I checked, the 3gs was pulling way ahead when I voted (for Droid might I add).
What a comeback for the Droid. I hope it wins!

I don't see why we should make something out of this. I think it's just a matter of preference. IMO Engadget's basis for Phone of the Year is it's popularity and not it's merits. I think it's a flawed system and in that, I really don't care who they named Phone of the Year.

These sorts of things just make me chuckle. The awards themselves have absolutely nothing to do with merit ... Engadget is just doing it for the page views, and and the votes are just going to be a reflection of which camp is the better organized and choreographed.
