I have noticed that the "Debossed" and "Flat Carved" skins that I made for Beautiful Widgets have been somewhat popular. Another member also recently asked if I could make some icons in the same style... which I haven't done yet due to a lack of existing plain black icons or vector icons that I can modify without drawing new ones from scratch.
So, in the meantime, I thought that I would make a small theme based on the "Debossed" look.
The Gmail, SMS, and phone notification widgets are SMS Unread Count - Free App. In the "Debossed Widgets" download below are the .png images for the app. If you don't have one already, just make a folder on your SD card under "data" called "com.kanokgems.smswidget" and stick the .png's in there. The app will allow you to select those images for the widget.
The remaining widgets are all reskinned by me and available for download here: Debossed Widgets.
Icons will most likely be created in the future. (If anyone knows where I can get a good collection of black & white Android app icons, let me know.)
For anyone who uses Adobe Photoshop and would like the same style I used:
How's about making some debossed toggles pack in beautiful widgets?
The one problem with the Beautiful Widgets toggles is that the only thing you can really skin is the background. They still use the same standard icons for all if them. I could make a skin for it, but it would probably be just a debossed square for the background that may change color with the toggle. We'll see, though... if anyone wants to use Beautiful Widgets for their toggles, I can throw a skin together.
I totally dig the debossed look. Thanks so much! Where can I get the debossed weather icons and how do I use it with BW?
You have to buy BW from the market and then click on weather skins and the option to download new skins and it should be on there. Its one of the more popular ones. More great work by paul

Try launcherpro.droidiicons.com for icons or an easy way to make them.
I'm not sure what you mean. Do you just want the .png image?
What is shown in the screenshots above are functional widgets with the icons already applied. All of the widget apps are available for download in Post-1.
Awesome stuff paulmz! You've inspired me and I've spent the day creating a whole set of debossed icons, but I do have one question... what ring profile widget are you using? I downloaded your widget pack, but I don't see one in there for the ring profile changer.

You are absolutely correct. I neglected to include that particular app with the zip file. (I also didn't have a copy of it saved so I had to create a new one- haven't tested it- hope it works.)
Ok... got a screenshot today. I'm using the Debossed skin with LauncherPro combined with a few of paulmz's icons and a few of my own. Thanks again for the excellent skin.

Looks good... but what is up with the dots on the clock? They're HUGE!
So it turns out that the huge dots were being caused by the fact that I'm using the latest version of BeautifulWidgets and the superclock wasn't playing nice with the older skin. I've re-sized them for a better look though.
As for the other icons, I actually used several icons created by the LauncherPro community (here) and then just adjusted them to match my debossed look. There's lots of (mostly) solid color icons over there to pick from so I just grabbed the ones I needed and adjusted them. Worked out pretty well.

Sorry... that's really my fault, then. I haven't touched the Super Clocks skins for Beautiful Widgets yet. I just find 9-patch png's annoying.

I looked there before for icons but didn't see any solid color ones. Did you get them from the paid app?

No worries. It seems that the dots were the only real issue and I've got that fixed now.

In regards to the icons, I am using the paid app but the icons on that site are available to anyone as they are community created (Icons page here). You're correct that they aren't truly solid color and there are some that don't work so well with the debossed look, but most of them translate pretty well even though they're not actually solid color. Case in point... here's the original icon I used for the Dolphin HD app
And here's my modified icon:
I cut out all the gray tones, but the overall look still works pretty well. They've got lots of good icons to choose from there.

hi folks,
is there any possibilitiy to get your contacts-icon and the menu-icon?
i need them to fulfill the collection. only i have gmail, sms and phone icon from the link above.
Can anybody help me with a tutorial in gimp to make this kind of letters?
I was trying last days and i was reading a lot but....the result is not what i was looking for!
Thanks a lot!!!
Well, I finally got a Samsung Galaxy 7" Tab (don't mock me- it's exactly the type of tab I wanted after doing a lot of research). I still love the Android7 theme on my Incredible so I haven't really touched that in well over a year (other than tweaks and improvements).
With this Galaxy Tab, I now have a blank slate to start doing themes and layouts. Starting small- mostly from a lack of time to do anything really creative. Thought I would share, anyway.
I created an account to say thank you for the resources and inspiration. I'm just getting into customizing my android and I love the look of the debossed items enough that I'm learning a lot and doing a little more with it.
@paulmz, are you planning on doing a skin of your Debossed Theme for Beautiful Widgets Super Widget? They're deprecating the Home widget now, and I'd hate to lose that look.
I was unable to get the Music mod to display the debossed widgets properly, for whatever reason (I am using an LG Optimus V), so I pulled some of the icons out of that mod pack and used them to theme Media Button from the Android Market -- that widget is very easy to self-theme and it works like a charm!
I am using ADW Launcher EX and the Hard Carved theme, which goes all right if not perfectly with the debossed widgets and provides a variety of icons to choose from.
This is a little busy but contains all of my notifying apps, time, weather, etc. at a glance, and makes a very informative home screen dashboard.
ADWLauncher EX or ADW.Launcher with the Hand Carved Theme for icons. Stock phone (using the call icon because the green goes better with the theme), stock messages, ColorNote, and MailDroid with the Email icon set. I use gesture control for the notifier bar and the dock. I am not rooted and don't think I can theme the notifier bar without rooting, so I hide it when I'm not using it.
The control widgets paulmz kindly provided on the top.
Beautiful Widgets with paulmz's Debossed theme set for the Home and Weather widgets.
Media Buttons re-themed with icons swiped out of paulmz's modded Music player APK.
And a link to the wallpaper, from a photo of a plate:
What I'd change if I actually had image editing skills (I have some very rusty and primitive GIMP practice but nothing up to this):
Shrink the bluetooth widget icon so it's more in keeping with the size of the other widgets.
Re-skin the Hand Carved theme in a Debossed look so they don't have as sharp edges and aren't colored or are more subtly colored.
Build a battery widget theme so I can have a circular/pie or ring debossed battery widget, very minimalistic and inset like the other widgets.
If I could actually program I would build a notifier that instead of just adding a little colored circle to the phone, message, mail, etc. icons to notify, changes their color or makes them glow. (I don't need the number count, I just need to know if I have unread stuff.)

I wasn't planning on it. I haven't had time to work on Android stuff lately. It's definitely a labor of love and there's bills to pay.
A few of my skins that don't have background images will probably eventually be transferred to the Super skin. I just really don't like the patch 9 png's- they don't work with detailed backgrounds.
