Hi guys. I've got a bunch of correctly sized wallpapers at http://www.flickr.com/groups/640x480/. Please check them out and add yours if you have some.
Wallpapers are sweet on the G1 because as you swipe, the apps move independtly of the wallpaper, which mimics the "closer things go faster"...like mario and the mountains in the background.
i'm having some trouble finding a wallpaper that work! i hate that it crops pictures
Size your photos to 640x480 and it won't crop them. That box that comes up when you set a wallpaper is a little misleading. You can drag it to fit the full size of a 640x480 image.

I spent a little time to collect these images, they are to me really interesting, but you might find the sizes are vary and need to be adjusted to fit the screen. Here they are, please tell me how you think. Thanks

Have a great day!
Added some solid colors in there. There's also a QR code to get to the group quickly from your phone.

Hey happiness, excellent work with the little how to and the wallpaper catalog you have going. I usually find some pretty decent wallpapers that look fine on my monitor, but end up looking odd on my G1. Thanks again!
Are any of you guys having issues with the quality of the wallpapers? Like, no matter how high the quality of the image is, it doesn't look as clean? Even when i re size an image to 640x480, it doesn't look good. Anyone?

Yes I noticed that as well but im still trying to figure out if there's a way around this. Some walls look nice and clean while others seem pixelated.

Ive tried a HOST of things. Even tho you are choosing the correct size, the G1 still wants to stretch it out a little bit more. It may be possible that we are all using the wrong resolution.
EDIT: I found this on HTC's website. Highlights 3.2-inch TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with HVGA (320 X 480 pixel) resolution. Full 5-row QWERTY keyboard. One-click Google Search™. Customizable Home screen with instant Email, text message and IM notifications. Instant access to mobile Internet services (Gmail™, YouTube™, Google Maps™, Google Talk™, Google Calendar™). High-speed 3.5G network connection. Wi-Fi technology with seamless transition to open networks. Android Market™ with access to variety of software and media downloads. (some fees may apply) 3.2 megapixel color camera with auto focus.

These are all my own images, that I cropped and resized for the G1. I know that people have thought my images came with it. You can check out my set of wallpapers and see if there are any you like.
This is the one I use. It seems to work really well, with the horizon line.
Right now, there are 12 images, please feel free to try them out. They have all been released under creative commons.

Those are some awesome shots!

i started googling 'hd wallpapers' and they all seem to work and you don't really have to crop much when you transfer to your phone!
They have to be 4:3, which is rather standard. The PROBLEM, is that one of my full-res shots, will be many megabytes. While, the 640x480, is MUCH less. I believe the software reduces them to that size anyhow. So, you are better off using the native resolution, since you don't get more quality out of a larger picture, when it is shrunk.

Very interesting! I wonder if that really is the problem right there! I'll try it out once i get home later =)

I tried it myself and it didnt "fit" the screen properly. Now, on the other hand, i downloaded some huge wallpapers. Something like 1900x1200 and it seems to be a bit better. Still some weird pixelation on almost all the images, but its getting better.
Edit: I think that the problem lies in how many colors the G1 can display. Ive been doing some digging and it seems like it can only display up to 64K colors. Dont hold me to it, but if thats the case...this device is really letting me down.

If that is the case then I myself will be bummed =( You would think that it's a given for it to display more colors. But regarding your theory though, it does seem plausible. I'm switching with monochromatic walls and they do at least seem a little bit better than full color ones.
Hopefully its really not the case. I really want to find out the proper settings for the wallpaper so that I could contribute a couple of custom walls...
Hope you enjoy all the wallpapers I created for all the members of this great community

that's what i figured out. i have a mario underwater scene on mine now and it was a HUGE hd wallpaper.
Ok, so i've spent roughly 2 and a half hours already trying to figure out the "right" settings for the wallpaper, without it downgrading your custom's quality.
So far I've only figured out that it's either a jpeg or png file format =(
The thing is, i've tried using the default jellyfish wallpaper and it looks crisp and clean. I downloaded the same wallpaper from a flickr account and, lo and behold, when used as a wallpaper, the quality lowers quite significantly.
I'm trying to pull out the default wallpapers from the phone via the USB but I have no idea where it's located at =( If i can grab one of them, maybe il be able to determine how its set up.
I've spent some time to figure out the best way to arrange picture elements in a given 640x480 field so it would look nice on G1 display.
Some of this might be a common knowledge so if I'm bashing down an open door just bear with me
G1's screen resolution is 360x480 (when you hold phone vertically). So it shows full height of a wallpaper but only half of it's width.
Center screen cuts a quarter from each side (180 pixels) and side screens show left and right half of the wallpaper respectively.
It would be easy if not for a status bar on top and the application tab on the bottom.
*** All the following measurements are approximated to, oh let's say +/- 3px
The status bar covers apr. 12 pixels on top and the app tab sticks out apr. 50 pixels from the bottom. And you can't get rid of those, for now at least
It gets even worse when you slide the screen to get to the keyboard.
Your wallpaper is re-oriented and butchered
You are loosing 92 pixels from the top (taking the status bar into account) and 92 pixels from the bottom. I won't even mention the app tab which is now sticking out from the right edge of the screen (but it's still 50 pixels wide).
Why so much details?
Because the first thing I did with my G1 was getting rid of the clock widget and changing a wallpaper. It just took me some time to adjust it so it looked half decent.
I know that in comparsion to some of the previous ones this look like crap but I like it nonetheless
For the best effect I keep my main screen empty and all the shortcuts are on the outer edges of the side screens.
Sorry for rambling but just maybe someone will actually benefit from this, eh?
***EDIT***
And I know now why a wallpapers here are so blurry. Apparently when you upload picture into forum it's getting scaled down - just a pixel from each dimension - but the algorythm is so bad that right now my wallpaper trully looks like crap

Yeah I got rid of the clock widget as well. I like more "clean" looking desktop =D
I know, it seems to lower the quality of whatever you upload. But im also thinking if there is a way that it won't lower the quality OR if there is a specific "setting" for the images before you upload them. Right now the only thing i know is that images look better when they're at 16-bit.

Reason: updated with wall
Im not sure if this makes the interface run quicker or smoother, but all I did was make a transparent GIF and use that. Makes the screen neutral (not black, but maybe I am color blind!) :-) I like it.. its the same thing I do with my PC.. solid neutral color.

This will take you to the main wallpapers page. Clicking on an image brings up a larger version of it. Then below the image are links to various different image sizes. Right below those links there is a button that says "Download for Mobile Phone." Clicking this button shows a menu with various different small screen sizes. All they way to the right then is the 640x480 link.
Some of these images are just amazing.
