Agreed. I'm using CalWidget in a 3x2 configuration and love it. Works just fine with Gemini, and shows a lot of information. The only drawback is that when you tap CalWidget, it brings up the built-in calendar. Wish they'd make that configurable.

powell, just wanted to make you aware of a time format issue. In Preferences, I do not have the Time Format checked for the 24-hour format and the time is displayed correctly in Day view or in Month view (when viewing the agenda above the monthly calendar). However, when opening the Day view directly with the widget on my home screen, the times are displayed in 24-hour format instead of the preferred 12-hour format.

Didn't know if this was intentional or not.

Hi Powell,
Just a couple of things to report. I entered 3 events for 5/19/10 but only 2 show up when I go to day view by double tapping the date on the calendar view or by tapping the widget. All 3 are listed in the events list above the calendar in month view. I've rechecked my dates and times and they are correct and none extend past midnight into the 20th. Also, the widget only shows 2 of 3 also. Also, when I go to day view from the widget I also get the time based on the 24 hour format and the color bars indicating which calendar the event was entered into is incorrect. The color bar is correct in the events list in month view. The color bar is also correct on the 2 events listed in day view when I go there from calendar view. I also tried entering and saving a fourth event from day view by using the 'add event' button just to see if it would show up and it did not. Again, it is there on the events list above the calendar in calendar view but not on day view. I too, have found that when I open the day view from the widget the 'add event' is grayed out.

We know you are working diligently to make this app the very best it can be. I applaud your efforts and can't wait to see how this evolves. Thanks for all the hard work.

I'd like to report a small "cosmetic" issue with the day view: when swiping to the left, to access the next day, a "flipping page" animation is correctly played.

When swiping to the right however, the same animation is played, and it looks like the page actually moved to the left, instead of going to its supposed direction (right).

The data shown on the day view stay coherent and correct, but the animation is often misleading, suggesting that you are getting the "next" page instead of the "previous".

I'm sorry if this problem has been already reported, and let me stress the fact that is just a minor issue in an overall awesome app!

Lightbulb New feature suggestion

While I'm here, I'd like to suggest a new feature.

One thing that I found terrific on my previous PalmOS/Datebk calendar was the ability to use Floating Events and Advance Reminders to set reminders for expiring car insurance, for example.

Here's how it worked:

A Floating Event in Datebk is an event whose date it's always "today". When creating a FE, you create an event that "moves" itself automatically as the days pass by, so that it's always placed on the current day.
It is very handy if you want to remind you something to do, like "remember to call grandpa!" or something.

But the real shine of this feature was in pair with a recurring event: imagine -as an example- that you have a yearly insurance whose payment expires on 15th of July.

Firstly, you create a "standard" Event on 15th July, something like "Insurance expires!".

Then, in the Event properties, you flag the "Advance Event" option, that lets you input how many days in advance you want to be alerted. Let's say 10 days.

What happens is that on 5th of July, 10 days before the Event, the calendar will show a new Floating Event saying something like "Insurance expires! - due in 10 days".
As you may have guessed, the following day the Floating Event will automatically move to the 11th, now saying "Insurance expires! - due in 9 days".

And so on.

I'm not sure something like this could be technically viable on Android, given the Google Calendar integration, etc.
What I know is that Datebk used the "notes" field to store the addition info needed for its magic.

That's it.

(and please forgive my awful English... I hope I was clear enough)

Couldn't you just set a really early reminder and snooze it for a day? That's what I do in Outlook.

Yes, that's an option, but once you snooze it, you won't be reminded for the rest of the day.

The beauty of the Datebk approach (at least IMO) is that you have your "Floating Event" sitting quietly there every time you look at the Today screen, without "bothering" you with alarms.

I think it's a preferable solution for some kinds of activities.

Yes, this is very similar to what I was talking about in an earlier post. I use this feature A LOT to set future deadline dates. In the program I currently use when you set a reminder it gives you the option to repeat this reminder daily for X number of days prior to the event or weekly for X number of weeks prior to the event. It would be wonderful if this could be included in this app. It keeps future events/deadlines that from sneaking up on you.

I discovered another issue that may require a fix. The widget on my home screen is showing tomorrow's date already and it's only 8:30 my time today. Plus, when I tap the widget the agenda that opens in day view is today's agenda even though the events shown on the widget are tomorrow's events.

I use Calwidget too. I'd love to have a 4x2 calwidget type agenda showing with a 4x2 calendar view (maybe two weeks showing on the actual calendar) for a total 4x4 widget. that's my dream anyway. and I agree with calwidget bringing up the built in calendar...wish that wasn't the case...cause man do i love my Gemini calendar!!!

I forgot to mention, Powell: I LOVE the new graphics of the event screen. The colors and round-corners on the boxes are very nice!

Yes, some issues with time zones has been reported. I will fix this, but it is going to take some time, because I am going to 4 days long vacation. I will come back on Sunday, so be patient :-)
I agree, that Day Widget should display the upcoming events, even if they do not start today.

Actually, I don't like it that much. Too colorful for my taste.

But hey, as long as the app is so awesome, who cares!

Powell,
I absolutely lover your calendar app and it is working really well for me. My only request is you have a whole year view so that I can tap on any month of the year to view it instead of scrolling up and down on the touch bar.

Thanks once again for the tremendous effort you have put in so far.

Hi,
Can someone out there do a test to determine if a problem I am having is with my phone (HTC Hero) or if it is a program bug? Any event I enter for 7:00 PM or later shows up on the next calendar date in day view. Also, anything I enter for 6:00 PM shows up on both dates, the correct date and the following date. This only occurs on day view. The events list on month view is correct. A day or 2 ago I posted that some of my events were not showing up on day view. Then I realized that events scheduled for after 7:00 PM are actually showing up, just on the following day and 6:00 events are showing up on both days. Has anyone else noticed this or able to re-produce it? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Take care.

B,

This is the same bug that I reported in post #117 on the previous page. I am on the united states in the eastern time zone. Which time zone are you in?

Powell...loving this application. I cant stand to use any other app to put dates/appointments into now...you've ruined me! I have another comment/suggestion/feature request.

I love how in Outlook you can "catagorize" events. it gives you the option to label a certian number of colors for whatever you want to define them as. so when you put an event in, you can catagorize the event by color too. makes it really easy to visually at a quick glance to get an idea of what's going on that day. for example, I do PTO/vacation as red, meetings/conferences/seminars as yellow, birthdays as blue, and so on and so forth...so when i see my calendar in outlook, I can just at a glance know that whatever is coming up is a xxxxx because of the color of it. would it be possible to make the all day line or the dots or maybe even the background for that day a specific color based on a user defined category? I don't know what all this would require as far as programming, but it would be nice to have a limited number of colors that we could assign "tags" or "labels" to that when we add an event of that kind that the dot (or mulitple dots as someone posted a page or two back) or the all day event line or even the color behind the day on the calendar view would change to that color. I think that would make the best calendar app out there a little bit better... this would probably have to be an option type thing because I'm sure there would be some that don't want a "colorful" background or dots or whatever showing up ruining their look...but I'm more about functional and helpful than "pretty".

thanks again for the great app....and for being so responsive. it's nice to see a developer on this site asking for input and actually responding to it all too!

Thanks for responding. I am in the United States, central time zone. I apologize for duplicating your bug report. I've read this entire thread and either missed your post or it got lost in the muddle that is my mind today.

I wonder if people owning other models of phones are seeing this as well? Hopefully someone else will jump in here and let us know.

I really like this app and Powell has been so good about fixing things and tweaking things to add requested features, that I know he will work this out as soon as he can.

Yes, I can confirm that it happens on my Motorola Droid, too. Both instances: a >7pm event shows up on the following day, and a 6pm event shows up on both days.

Hi, I've made some tests on my Desire, but I wasn't able to reproduce your bug.

Events created on 18:00, 19:00 or 22:00 time (I'm using 24hrs format) show correctly in the proper day in day view, nothing appears in the following one.

I'm in the GMT +2 time zone (GMT +1 Central Europe, +1 hr summer time).

If I may be of any further assistance, please ask.

That would be nice. Maybe do something like what SenseUI does with the extended home screens where you pinch to zoom out and see all of the screens ("Leap view"). Then tap to go to the one you want.

Thanks for trying this. I suspect that this is only a problem for those of us in the New World, i.e. those with negative GMT offsets. Any counterexamples (e.g., Americans unable to reproduce this problem) would be great to know about.

It would be great to add meetings from contact or call log in the format that companionlink can translate bat to ACT contact manager.
Otherwise a great work in process! Keeps improving

Powell,

Thanks for the update, quick-fix & keeping the month slide bar.

Something I noticed when editing the start & stop time of an existing appt I wanted to pass along.
When changing the minutes in either the start or end time. For instance if I make a change to the start time minutes, the ending minutes time also changes. That is a good thing if the start/end time difference is still 2 hours. Ocassionally through, just trying to change the end time minutes the start will also change. And at times so will the hour. Not sure if this is a part of the time issue you mention above or not.

By the way, when I started using Gemini my phone was running 1.5. Last week I received the 2.1 OTA update. I don't know if it was happening with 1.5 or not. Or if it makes a difference.

Hope your vacation was relaxing.

Hi everybody... It's probably a silly question but... is there a way to change the default snooze time for calendar reminders?

Mine is currently set to 5 minutes, I'd like to set a greater value.

I wasn't able to find any relevant option in Gemini Cal, maybe it is something you set at OS level?

I've wondered about this in the past, and your question caused me to look it up. By Googling "android snooze time", I found a free app called "Calendar Snooze." It's in the Market, but I haven't tried it yet, and don't know how nicely it plays with Gemini Calendar. If you try it, please let us know.

Request: Maybe it's my "Windows" mentality, but could you add a deletion confirmation to events? Something like "Are you sure you want to delete this event?"

I tapped on an event in the calendar, went to the menu key, and instead of hitting EDIT hit DELETE and the event vanished.

Nope, the option you're referring to sets the default "advance" time for events with reminder, not the snooze time.

Example:
if I set it to 10 minutes, I'll correctly get an alarm 10 minutes before the event, and onscreen I'll get the option to dismiss it or to snooze it for 5 minutes.

What I want to change is that "5 minutes delay", but I don't know how.

Yes, your guess is very accurate. I will work on it now, hope it will be fixed soon.

This is not related to the time zones, it can be a screen sensitivity issue. The basic ideas of time settings are:
  1. If you change start time, duration of the event does not change, i.e. end time is incremented and decremented together with the start time,
  2. If you change end time, duration of the event changes, until the end time becomes equal to the start time. In such a case, decrementing the end time decrements also start time, because start time must be always before (or equal) the end time,
  3. There is a little weird behavior near midnight, when you increment the start hour, again, it is to prevent the end hour be before the start,

I wasn't able to find any relevant option in Gemini Cal, maybe it is something you set at OS level?
Generally, snooze time is not related to the calendar API, it is a value that could be set independently, at the OS level, however, I could not find such settings in my phone. Maybe Calendar Snooze, mentioned by @jae_63 will help you. I will pay attention on this topic and maybe will find solution which can be implemented in Gemini Calendar.

Tommygun meant snooze time, not default time, when reminder is set.

I must tell you one more thing, which may be important in the near future, before I find the solution: Gemini Calendar does not work on Android 2.2 (Froyo). It is because the serious change in Calendar API, that was introduced in this OS version. I am going to work this out, but it may take some time, since Calendar API is NOT officially documented.

O.k., I think it is time to go back to work
Thank you for your feedback!

Thanks, I'll try it asap and report back.

I suspect in fact that the snooze property may be something more Android-related than Gemini Cal-related.
(in my coding experience alarms and reminders are generally handled at OS level)

UPDATE
@ jae_63: I've tried out Calendar Snooze, but it has some serious problem on my HTC Desire. In many occasions during my test-run the device screen failed to turn on when notifying alarms, in other there where simply no snooze button at all. The developer says there are known problem on Sense UI devices like mine... so I guess it's a no-go.

Uninstalled.

Default Backups: HTC Sync

I have just joined this thread, but noticed you confirmed that Gemini is a "front-end" to the android calendar application database. I have an HTC Hero/Sprint, and have hated the Calendar program that comes with it. I need to continue using HTC Sync to back up the calendar to Outlook 2007 on my PC. It sounds like changes to the database I make via Gemini should be transparent, and I can continue using HTC Sync to backup my Hero calendar to Outlook?

If this works, then I can't wait to try it.

Thank for developing this.

Version 0.9.26 released.

If you are the user from the negative GMT offset (New World), and you encountered problems with timezones in Day View (some events starting in the evening were displayed on the following day), please, report, if it is fixed now.

I have also redesigned 4x1 widget (you probably will have to remove the old widget from the home screen and put the new one).
Now 4x1 widget shows first three events, that start in the next 7 days. Day of month, colored with the same color, as the calendar, is displayed next to the event title.

Summary of changes:
  • 4x1 widget shows date of event,
  • 4x1 widget shows events in next 7 days,
  • 4x1 date colored like calendar,
  • Day View timezone bug in fixed,
  • 4x1 widget timezone fixed

Thanks, Powell. The GMT problem looks good to me, and more importantly will make my wife happy, since she noticed this problem right away when I installed Gemini for her.

I like the widget too, and like even better that it does different things depending upon where you click.

EDIT: after thinking about this some more, I have a feature request: If you click on the rightmost of the four squares, it should take you into "Add Normal Event." You could even place a small plus-sign on the widget to remind the user of this capability. The middle two squares would continue to bring you into your day view, and the leftmost square would continue to bring you into the month view.

(By being able to add an event in this way, I could free the 1x1 square that I currently use for "Add Normal Event.")

loving the new widget! I just updated mine. it now sits on top of my main homescreen!

issue though...when you click on the widget, it takes you to the day view. when you hit menu, you get three options...1) go to, 2) today and 3) add. the add part of the menu is greyed out and won't allow me to add anything from the widget itself. not sure why this is...and I would love to have this functionality. am i just missing something here? i can't find a way to ungrey it and be able to add a event.

Congrats Powell on the best calendar app out there. I've recommended it to several different friends and they all love it too. now that we have our 4x1 upcoming appointment widget, how about a calendar widet to replace the stock calendar...a two week (monthly)type view (that you could scroll thru the weeks/months with)with the next weeks appointments in an agenda type view...the whole thing in a 4x4 or 4x3 view. kind of an all in one calendar widget. thanks for all your hard work...your continued development and your allowing us to be so involved in the process!

Editing and deleting events "from the widget" (that means, when you enter the Day View by clicking the right area of the widget) is disabled. It is because I wanted to make the Day View appear as fast, as possible. It is supposed to be read only mode, just for viewing...
I will think of making it writable again, if the speed issue is not the problem.

Everything looks real good on all the progress you are making. I would definitely second a 4x3 view that is identical to the calendar itself as a widget. I do not use any 4x4 views and like to keep the bottom block empty for swiping across and a 4x3 of the whole calendar and agenda view would be an automatic widget with any phone I have now or in the future..

Thanks for all of your hard work.

Default New Feature: duplicate events

I think you are missing one of the most important 'feature' of a calendar app on a mobile device. The ability to duplicate events. Take a look at the requests here Issue 2618 - android - RFE: Add Calendar feature to duplicate events - Project Hosting on Google Code

I think it will fit well in the month view. As we press and hold on an event, the options "Edit event" and "Delete event" appear, adding a "Duplicate event" here looks appropriate. All you have to do is create a new event with all entries filled in, duplicating the event that we press and hold on, while pre-setting the date and time to the current date and time.

It doesn't matter if it will take 3-5 secs to load the duplicate, it is still faster than having to type out everything myself on a handheld device. Most importantly, if I have a long description or a location that I cannot remember, I can easily duplicate it instead of switching back and forth, copying and pasting (which btw is horrible on android).

This will be productivity, which is the main reason why we buy a portable handheld device for work.

Hopefully, this will not be any hurdle to you. Remember, you'll be the 1st calendar developer to add such a feature on android, and every user from Windows mobile and Palm will want to get their hands on Gemini!

+1 on the repeat even feature.

Your widget is great, I am really liking the look a lot more than the stock widget of the same size!

A small bug report.

On the screen after we click on an event to view, we can see the yellow "Repeats" box that shows a description of the repeating days and date. The date shown in this box will always be in this format "20100614" and does not follow the date format set under 'Preferences'.

Default Calendar Display

Hello, I've searched and can't find an answer...I love Gemini, but every time I start the program it shows a list of my calendars and asks which I want showed. I pick them and hit save, but then if I leave and click on it again, it asks all over again. Any ideas? Also, will I get updated thru the market automatically like my other programs or do I have to do something different here to get updates? Thanks!!

- How did you install Gemini ?
- "automatically" ? are you running froyo // 2.2 ? - otherwise i don't understand what you mean. Up to 2.1 you get the "normal" notification that an update is availible(or have to check yourself at market - downloads), and then have to download it through the market.

If your running 2.2 that would explain your other issue too, because powell is saying in his market description, that Gemini currently isn't compatible with Froyo (cause of changes in the calendar API)

If your not running 2.2, what device do you have and what android version are you running ?
Or maybe you could send powell a log that would help the most.
You can read how here : How user can help developer to fight with bugs

@powell
btw there is a small mistace on Gemini Mobile in the "feature post"

sounds nice, not my top priority but nice to have

i would "duplicate" a feature request made one mothe ago by myself, because it was again moth's end a few days ago, and i had to go back and forth a lot again.
Is it possible to get a "moth view" with

- this week
- and the next 2 weeks ?
i dont what to bother you, just make shure that it did got overlooked, because it was again the week of the month this little inconvenience kicks in

again thanks for this great calendar and the great interaction this us users

I had e-mail conversation with mcfryer, he told me, that he had Android 2.1 and owned Motorola Droid. I am not sure why calendars list appears every time he starts Gemini Calendar, it is strange.
As for the question about updating, Gemini Calendar will be updated as other applications, you will not have to do anything special.

Yes, 4 weeks view would be interesting, I have put this into my list of to-do things.

Event duplication - I have thought about it long time ago and I think I have a nice solution, which will be comfortable and easy to do. There is only one, little problem, regarding the calendar API, which prevents me from implementing this solution. I will think about it again.

I'm having a problem with my on phone calendar syncing to google calendar maybe someone can help with.
Before I started using Gemini I was using the standard calendar to keep track of my appointments. It wasn't syncing to google calendar but I didn't worry about it too much then.
When I started using Gemini it automatically listed the old appointments that were in my phone. Great! I also noticed that any appointment I entered using Gemini automatically synced with google calendar. Fantastic. But none of the older appointments synced. Only the newest ones. When I entered the new appt's/events with Gemini I made sure I selected my google account and not "my calendar". So that is why they sync.
Anyway, except for going through and manually re-entering all of my old appts/events into Gemini, does anyone know how I can convert the in phone "my calendar" events so they will sync. I have tried bringing one of them up in Gemini and trying to edit. But the "my calendar" field is grayed out so that I cannot change it to my google account. I have also tried separately un-selecting and re-selecting which calendars to display in both Gemini and the on-board calendar and syncing and still nothing. Turned them off in "my calendar" and on in Gemini and sync. Then turned them off in Gemini and on in "my calendar". Still nothing.
I need to do a hard re-set of my Eris since the 2.1 OTA upgrade. I'm having some other issues and I'm told the hard re-set should fix those. But I want to make sure my old appts are in google calendar so they aren't lost.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
