Question Bluetooth APIs

This may be the wrong forum but I'm going to ask anyway

I'm having a lot of difficulty pulling together what bluetooth APIs are available to be used in Android apps, but also, to be honest what actually exists.

Does anyone know if it's part of the spec for devices to report their battery level/status over bluetooth? I'm thinking my headphones that I've forgotten to charge for the last few days(!). It would be of great interest to me if it was possible to extract the battery status and create a widget/app to display this.

I strongly suspect this isn't a real bluetooth API and I'm just making the need for it up, but if anyone has any thoughts they'd be welcome.
