Default apache webserver download problems

You can not download a file from an apache webserver that has HTTP Basic Authentication. I set up an apache server so that I could download music to my phone, and I can log in and see my files, but downloads always fail. This sucks. Can it be fixed? Would a 3rd party browser work?
More information on this problem here: Issue 1353 - android - [Download Manager] Add support for HTTP Basic Auth (401) - Project Hosting on Google Code
Everyone who thinks this sucks should star this issue so google pays attention.
