Angry Weird Networking Bug

I am working on an application that contains some legacy code that uses URlConnection object to send and receive data.

I am running into a weird issue. Most of the time things work fine. However sometimes when I call connection.getIntputStream() I get back an instance of LocalCloseInputStream that has no data in it. Normally (when things work) I get back an instance of LimitedInputStream.

When looking at tcpdumps I can see that all the data has gotten to the device itself so I don't think it is a problem with the network/vpn that I am running on.

This device is running android 2.2. I would much rather be running a newer version of android but for a number of reasons I am stuck with 2.2.

Any idea what might be happening and how I can fix it?
