Default Safe Poly Count for 3d games?

I'm not sure if this is in the right place or not, but I'm considering making a 3d android app (sometime after my current project), and I was wondering what a safe polygon count for the 3d models is. The reason I need to know this is because I would want to make my game look as nice as possible while still being able to run on all (or at least most) android phones with little to no slowdown. Anyone here who has worked on 3d apps want to point me in the right direction?

Default

There really is no rule of thumb here... The capabilities differe from device to device, from GPU to GPU, etc... The best thing you can do is make a reasonable guess, then go with it. If it turns out your guess didn't work, tweak the vertex count appropriately.
