Default Request: Random Alarm Clock / Reminder

Hi All,

I'm not sure if anyone would like to tackle this but I'm looking for an app, that I could send a time range, for example (6:00 AM - 11:30 PM), that the alarm would randomly go over x amount of times in that range. The time range could be customizable as is the x amount of times the alarm goes off.

I did post this over in the android apps area but so far no responses, so i thought maybe i could try here.

Thanks

Paul

May I ask what the use case for this would be? Why do you need an alarm to go off randomly?

Thanks for the response, it may seem a little wierd but I am a diabetic and my doctor is requesting that I start trying to be a little more random in my blood checks. Ive been doing it for so long in a set schedule i am finding it hard to change my routine. So I was hoping for an app that i could use to remind me maybe 3 -4 times per day at random times.

hope that makes sense. Like I said its wierd but im trying to break 15 years of habits and this would help me out alot.

That's an interesting use case. Unfortunately, I can't help you, since I wouldn't use it myself, and it's too much work to do, for such a limited kind of use case.

I haven't forgotten about this project. Getting swamped with projects In class and on top of homework. It's just been hectic. I'll see about working on this with freetime this weekend.

Just a suggestion, but I currently do something similar (to remind me of certain things I need to keep an eye on during the day). I just use a Tasker profile to wait random amount of minutes and then pop up a message. Ofcourse your needs seem slightly different, but might spark an idea nevertheless

Thanks for the idea, this is the Tasker app by Pent? I was looking thru his site, its possible it could work, but on feature im not sure it can do is to only run during say 7am and midnight ( i dont need the alerts while im sleeping ).

I sent the developer an email to see if he can tell me if the app will be able to do that.

Has any work been do on this so far? I should have some free time this week to work on a quick solution for you. I just got finished publishing my live wallpaper 'Box Plane' and Comic browser 'Questionable Content Browser' this week.

Let me know if this is still something you could use and I will see what I can whip up for you.

Default Astrid can now do the job.

The latest update of Astrid (free at Market) includes an option for a random alarm. I find many uses for random reminders. For example, for various tasks & notes to myself (things to keep in mind, memorise, etc.), without random reminders I tended to place too many of them too close together, such as 6:00am or pm (especially when they're not all set at once), and it's more work to check each reminder time and spread them relatively evenly. It's quicker & more efficient to set up a somewhat even spread of reminders throughout the day if the reminders are random.

Astrid can be set to silent during a particular time range, so that the alarms don't sound during night-time sleeping hours.

Ahh, sorry, I just discovered that Astrid's "update" isn't free. It's a plugin so-called "power pack" to the free version, as a free trial. They charge $5 (Australian). I don't know if it's worth it for your needs, as you may not use the main features of Astrid.

THIS!?!? This is why you took away my 'remind me of an event before it actually happens' button? You know, the bit that actually made th whole program function as reminder software?

You may have made this guy's life more convenience but you're KILLING me! Really, this cute little change has to date cost me about 5 grand in missed appointments in a month.

I gave away my iPhone g2 to buy a nexus one to run this program, and now i'm faced with getting rid of this phone and dumping Android to find something that does work. That's probably going to be a palm pre running their legacy emulator and datebook db4. I've got to lose 5 years of software development to get something that while absurdly complicated and bloated, at least works.

Random reminders might actually be awesome if you could set them to start before an event occurs, but if it can only happen after the fact all it really does is laugh at you

The only way I can make things even vaguely work is to set two events of everything, the first of which is solely to announce the second event. This makes google calendars hopelessly clogged and complicated but at least it doesn't ruin it the way pre setting all my events would which seems to be the other option.

I have been interested in a random alarm for about 4 years when my doctor also requested more random glucose monitoring. I have been trying to do it randomly for years but failed. The situation is becoming more serious and I need more diet control and be more consistent with the random testing. Given the number of diabetics, the serious consequences and that it is an obvious standard request by endocrinologists, (not to be harsh) the limited use comment seems a little short sighted. I would encourage you to develop the app.

I would include a minimum time parameter between the random alarms so that one alarm would not follow another until a certain amount of time passed.

Better would be to have this function built into glucose monitors.

I will do this for you.

Just to get it straight, you would like a timer than you can set to go off a selected number of times per day. Also you would like the user to be able to select the time frame (say 30 minutes, 1 hour, etc?) in which the timer will randomly go off?

If you have any other things you'd like to see it have, just send me an e-mail.

Does anybody know if this app was ever created? I'm looking something that does exactly what is discussed.

Thanks!

Default Similar App in development

Oddly enough, My next program that I am working on is close to what you are asking for. If nothing is out that suits you, I can mod my app for that purpose if you like, or just use it in an odd way to accomplish that task. I will post here what my app is (still in progress and don't want the idea grabbed) when it is on the market. In addition, if you shoot me the reason so I can market the random alarm better, that would be available prolly within a week of release of the first. I am probably no more that 2 to 3 weeks from completion. Let me know if it is still needed.

I already have something similar in Android Market titled Random Reminder. You can have a look but it may or may not suit your taste.

Thanks.
