Default Car accident video recorder

An app to record - say - 20 minutes of video as a series of 2 minute files, round robin overwriting the oldest as needs be. Needs to record time & date on images.

The user would mount the phone so the camera can see out through the wind shield, then if an accident occurred - the driver has proof of what they were doing at beforehand that they can choose to use as evidence if they were behaving themselves. Any frame rate above about 5 per second would be good.

The phone lens could be locked onto infinity so it doesn't try to focus on wiper blades as they pass, etc.

Could be free as 5 minute version
or sold with enhancements of:-
* longer duration of recording (+$5)
* record GPS location on / with each frame (+$5)
* every [configurable] time interval send frame with image, time, GPS location to an FTP site (useful for fleet managers to find where a driver is, derive speed, view traffic conditions if held up) +$25
(the last one there is an opportunity for a PC based system to be built to use the data too)

I've been considering something like this, but one issue with this is not all accidents are in front of you.
Some are from the side, and some are from the rear.

Secondly, there aren't that many good windshield mounts out there, and the ones that are out there don't work if you already have a case on your phone.

A more useful system would be something running on a mini PC connected to 2-4 usb webcams facing fore and aft or in all 4 directions.
That being said, an android phone-based system would be an easier solution to implement - hardware-wise.
The software doesn't sound like it would be too difficult either. I might take a crack at it.

There is an app called extraI on the android market. It records the last 5 minutes at 10 frame/sec in round robin fashion. It stamps each frame with speed to prove your speed in case it's needed. It gives a warning sound when it sees red light

I posted my initial attempt at such an app in October last year and (just recently) the final version of an apk https://sites.google.com/site/johnkcrashrecorder/
