Default Android APP idea / request – SMS to create a Calendar Event/Reminder - need assistance

Hey All,

I have an android app idea and wanted to share it with the community to get your views on this. If any developer/s are interested in helping build this app then please do get in touch. I have searched the market place and the internet but haven’t found an app providing the functionality I have in mind. I will try to explain this in as much detail as possible, but if there is anything that is unclear please ask and I will elaborate more on it.

So here’s the idea....Lots of doctor surgeries, dentist and hospitals send SMS messages confirming appointment date and time, so in theory the user will receive this SMS, look at it and then it just sits in the inbox, on the day of the appointment they may forget they have an appointment. So what I’m thinking is, can an application be developed which scans through the SMS inbox and creates a calendar entry with a reminder feature for all text messages that have been received as an appointment confirmation / reminder. Perhaps, the app looks for the word ‘Appointment’ in the SMS and then checks if there is a date and time specified, if true it creates it as a calendar event. The user for example, can then be reminded on the day about the appointment just like you would have the reminders, etc. for meetings if calendar was sync’d with your email.

An example of a SMS we have is ‘Confirmation of appointment on 10 Aug 2011 18:30 at surgery name. For queries phone 0123456789. email@abc.com’ .

The above mentioned approach is for the calendar event to be created automatically, however, if this is difficult or further flexibility is required then perhaps the app should enable the user to add the SMS to the calendar as a calendar event manually. Say, I receive a text message, if I need to be reminded of this in x number of days at a specific time, I should be able to select from menu an option to ‘set reminder’ for the SMS and then I choose the date and time, remind 15 minutes prior to time specified and save it. On the day I would expect the phone to remind me about this SMS message (same feature as in Outlook where you can flag emails on a specified date and time). This will be handy for appointments as well as reminders for social events, for example, my friend sends me a SMS asking if I want to go cinema, I reply yes, he replies saying ‘ok we are on for Saturday’, I would then look at this SMS and set it as a reminder in my calendar so on Saturday the phone beeps and reminds me that I am meeting my friend to go to the cinema.

I hope the above is clear, if anyone is interested in helping build this app and are willing to utilise their coding skills then please do get in touch.

PS: the above idea may even be a good bolt on to one of the existing apps such as GoSMS Pro.....

Thanks,
