I don't think a marketplace powered by donations would do very well - why would anyone donate if they can get it for free? Apps powered by donations are okay because people are willing to donate to an individual for that individual's hard work. But people aren't going to donate to Google, a massive, worldwide company whose revenue for a single day is probably more money than the average person would see in his/her lifetime.
I do like Google's Market over the Apple Store, though. $99 to get the SDK, and then it's another $99 per year to submit apps to the store and have them kept there! It's just horrid for developers. Google's fee is really nothing if you want to develop apps - if you can afford an Android phone and a computer to program on, then you can afford a $25 one-time fee.
Just my humble opinion.
