EchoLink® software allows licensed Amateur Radio stations to communicate with one another over the Internet, using streaming-audio technology. The program allows worldwide connections to be made between stations, or from computer to station, greatly enhancing Amateur Radio's communications capabilities. There are more than 200,000 validated users worldwide — in 162 of the world's 193 nations — with about 5,000 online at any given time.
Is EchoLink available for a smartphone or PDA, such as an iPhone or a Windows Pocket PC?
Many handheld computers (PDAs) and smart phones now have wireless networking and audio capability. An edition of EchoLink for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch is now available, free of charge, at the App Store. You must already be a validated EchoLink user before you can use this edition of the program; if you are not already validated, please download and install the Windows version on a PC first, then follow the validation procedure as outlined on this site.
Editions of EchoLink for other mobile platforms, such as Android, are also a possibility in the future. Please note that Windows PC applications such as EchoLink cannot be installed on a Windows Mobile device.
There are several open source applications for Linux that can access Echolink. thebridge, used for Echolink conference servers, and Echolinux, a client for linux, can be found here CQiNet, linking Ham Radio Via the Internet.
I'm digging into some development books and doing lots of reading in order to attempt to start development on this, but I am not a dev. I know about 3 lines of php and how to run make and that is the extent of my programming knowledge. It will be a great endeavor for me to do this, so any knowledgeable assistance or willing volunteers to head up such a project would be fantastic.
This would be such a great feature for the Hero etc and i second a push to get it sorted, I can't help in development of this as i know nothing about programing etc but back you all the way, Iphone is ahead in my eyes on this and i want this on my Hero.
Echolink/K1RFD has a beta version that is testing right now it will be on the market very soon. There are some polishes to do yet. Some foreclosing and other minor issues but it will be ready very soon.

Can we get the beta release? So that we can test it too.
A beta version is being tested now. Seems to work with a few minor bugs that he is working on. He sent out some invites via a google group Sunday night to test it. The group is http://groups.google.com/group/echolink-android?hl=en but Jonathan will have to approve your membership to the google group. Not sure how many testers he wants as too many can be a cluster which may be why he sent it out to a select few

Downloaded the Echolink App from the App store last night. So far seems to work good, Interface is very similiar to the I-Phone EL App. Did notice if the app is still active (Not Connected) and you get a phone call you cannot not hear the other party on the phone, Just have to be sure to close the EL App when done.
