"Official ARCHOS, Inc. Availability update: The ARCHOS 70 internet tablet will be available on archos.com next week. The ARCHOS 101 internet tablet will be available on archos.com the week of 11/8."
I contacted TD today to switch which credit card I was going to use and he said he couldn't do it because the sku was lock(locked to stop preorders) and if he did anything it would pull me out of line. The second part of our conversation was about the shipments. He said they have 400 16g 101 coming in and around 200 preorders so there would be enough to cover all current 16gb preorders, but the shipment on the 25th has yet to be registered into the system, so he believes it hasn't come. He also said that they have two more shipments coming, one tomorrow and then the 15th.
I get the feeling the dates are correct, but the shipments are not coming in..
I originally pre-ordered a 101 with 16 gb but then changed my order to an 8 gb model for the following rationale:
I plan to load everything possible on an external 16 gb or 32 gb card (apps, music, books, etc.). I can then back up the card to a computer. I realize that some entire apps and even some small portions of apps get installed into main memory, but my view is that if something gets really badly messed up, the probability is that it will be on the external card and all I would have to do is blow it away and reload it from my backup instead of risking serious software damage to the unit.
I just canceled my pre-order from futurepowerpc.com because I did a little more research and found that they lied a good deal on when items where actually going to be delivered.
Can anyone recommend somewhere to pre-order the Archos 101 8gb? I really want to get it in as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.
Just got this info back from HotMP3Gear.com
I asked about expected delivery for US customers....
"We are expecting them early NOV. Also I will ship from state side to avoid customs delays

By the way, I live in the USA.
The consensus over on archosfans seems to be that tigerdirect/compusa/computercity would be the best bet... some questions as to whether their supply arrived a couple days ago due to doing inventory but there are still supervisors there saying pre-orders are expected to Ship on Monday 11/1...

its seems as though all of those places are sold out at the moment, i'd rather not order from some random place i've never heard of
Im thinking about the place I mentioned as it seems like he would have one to preorder. That way when i MISS out when tigerdirect goes live, or has to wait till shipment #2 I dont get stuck waiting - wishing i had a chance to order it now.

its tempting, i just emailed that place asking about there inventory(if they have enough units to fill orders) and also when they would ship out by. and they will send a free hdmi with it, not much but still.

well heck, for the 10$ i was going to spend on one @ tiger direct, its worth it!
Oh and he said theyre taking pre orders @ archos.ca FYI
Internet Tablet Comparison the archos.ca twitter page sends you here for pre order. the guy here said they still have units for pre order available and expect them early november. where is everyone else getting theirs?
does anyone know if its been confirmed how much RAM and ROM the Archos 101 has?
both 512 and 256 has been mentioned.
i am not worried about trying to get later versions of Android installed on it, i am more interested in the amount of programs i can keep on it at any one time.

256, this has been confirmed by the few that actually have them in hand on the archosfans forums.

well that pretty much closes the door on gingerbread then...thats ok this tablet with froyo will be a good first tablet until something else comes out may first of next year sometime.
I ordered the 16gb from there - lets hope they get them soon
i see where tigerdirect is now selling the 16gb again. i bet we'll get them just as quick from this place though since we are guaranteed a tablet from the first batch.

and a free mini HDMI cable
which will work well for my droid X too =D
i couldn't find them by searching the TD website either, i had to use the link above. does anyone know if any archos tablets have been rooted? i am hoping to see some developement for my new tablet.
also TD shouldn't be advertising them to have 2.2 if they ship with 2.1...

As far as I know none of the gen8 tablets have been rooted, but considering the following that they already have, I'm sure it won't be long.
So what about Side loading apps? I kinda assumed it would do it, since I have a X and I can, but learned that AT&T doesnt allow it so im wondering if this will.
Scoob, I think that's how people have added the Google Market app to the Archos devices. Get the .apk on the device and install it.
awesome - havent been over there yet, so i wasnt sure if it was a custom rom or something more "invasive" than a side load.
Wonder how all these 400x800 apps will look at 1024x600...

Most look pretty good... using ZT-180 with Market add... depends on developer... most scale clean... a few aren't as well implemented...
Just talked to the guy I ordered mine from on ebay and he said that he has them at his house right now and they will be shipping out tomorrow morning! Man, I can't wait until I get this tablet, this wait was starting to feel like the wait for the Incredible.

i hope that means that other vendors are getting their shipments in as well. i ordered from archos.ca and the guy said he'd ship it the day he gets them. i don't want to keep bugging him so i'm hoping that day is soon.

I plan on getting the Archos 70 Internet Tablet 250GB, probably from Archos itself. They said they'd be on their site this week and that seems to be more of a sure thing over TigerDirect since I didn't pre-order. I'm pretty pumped to put all of my music on it. I'll probably use it instead of my Evo anytime I'm around Wifi. I'm the type who will carry it with me everywhere I go, lol.
I wonder if there will be many accessories made specifically for the Gen8 lineup, I really hope there are a few good cases to choose from and I don't have to buy something that was designed with another tablet in mind.
Emailed the .ca guy this AM and he said they were expected early nov. so I dont think they got anything in today. Tigerdirect is still not showing anything. Wonder if that Nov 8th date for the Archos.com is going to hold true for other retailers too
Does anyone know if the touted app space left on the tablets (I think 182 is the number now, assuming Froyo is installed) INCLUDE the bloatware that they put on it? I mean, who needs a Wikipedia app when you can just book mark it? I wouldn't expect that to free up much space but the 3d games and other garbage might.

It has been confirmed to have 256mb of RAM, not 182.
Nothing on TigerDirect or the US Archos site. Perhaps we won't see anything until next Monday?
Sorry, I just don't quite trust that hotmp3gear site... any site that looks like it was written in 1998 just doesn't cry "I'm secure!" to me.
Edit to add... at least that site uses PayPal... I might have a little more trust... Would just like to know for sure when they will be getting stock and when they can ship.
Added more: I emailed them to inquire about the shipping date. Will update if they respond.

Although I have not received my order yet, I can confirm that when I requested a change from the 16gb to the 8gb model, I received confirmation of my credit from Paypal in a matter of minutes. So, they seem to be reliable. And they are listed on the main Archos website as the Canadian distributor.
I checked with the supplier - it's for a tablet that is 2 inches wider than the Archos 101 (do I hear "IPAD or clone"?). Also, if you look closely at the picture with the keyboard, the plastics quality looks really poor (dented).
EDIT: 1.2 inches difference, not 2 inches.

Actually now I'm leaning toward the ViewSonic GTablet. While the interface overlay seems cumbersome, I bet it can be removed after the market gets it's hands on 'em. It's $79 more, but has more RAM and 16GB internal storage...

It's only $30 more than the 16GB Archos, isn't it?
