Yeah the prevailing philosophy now is to install an apps to (external) sd card app from Play Store. Unfortunately, the root exploit is usually needed.
Keep an eye on this area: ARCHOS 97 Platinum - All Things Root Guide .. brand new device pretty much, but they all do end up getting rooted, which opens up possibilities for those of you wanting more app room.
