I want to install Froyo in my phone ever since the moment i got it a month ago. SInce Froyo was not officially available for Aria then, I kept my patience to wait for the official OTA release from HTC. However, I (like many other android users) have rooted my phone in order for me to access few apps which are not available in my region.
Finally on 17 December 2010, HTC made Froyo available to Aria and a few others. So, I downloaded the updates using the normal method (settings> about phone> system software updates). However, while installing the update, the screen shows the triangle warning bar.
I have contacted a HTC support person and was told that the OTA cannot be updated on a rooted device. This is kinda disappointing.
So I need your help on this issue. I figure out there are 2 options available for me in order to update to Froyo. They are:
1. Unroot the phone back and restore factory settings. Then re-download the Froyo OTA and install it as normal. The problem is, I dont know how to unroot. I rooted my phone using Unrevoked3.
2. Install the updated Froyo ROM via cyanogen. I found this link (HTC Aria: Full Update Guide - CyanogenMod Wiki) which supposed to update my device, and has followed everything including restoring it to factory settings. But I am still stick with Android 2.1.
So, anyone has an idea how can I update my device to Froyo 2.2.
Your help is deeply appreciated. Thanks
p/s: currently using Cyanogen 6.0 Stable candidate

The trick to installing a OTA update on a rooted phone is that you must replace ClockworkMod Recovery with the stock Recovery and then the OTA will update. That will present itself with another problem though, once you take the Froyo OTA, you will lose root and as of yet there is no method to regain root because the Froyo update contains a new HBOOT version.
I you are currently running CM 6.0 Stable, then you already have Froyo running. You should be able to update CM 6.0 to CM 6.1.1 without much trouble. What kind of problems are you running into trying to flash CM 6.1?
I found a way to solve the problem. After much reading and knowing that un-rooting the phone and installing the OTA will disable rooting forever, I have decided to flash in Liberated Gratia ROM instead.
The only issue is, I have to forgo the South East Asian settings within the OTA and stick to the American/European settings instead.

But it all worked out, thanks again!!!
Just install the cyanogenmod 6.1.1 liberty ROM, it comes with android 2.2.1 (froyo) and it works perfectly on my aria. Actually the cyanogenmod rom works better than the 2.1 OTA did on my phone, if i had the choice between the two i would still keep my CM ROM.
how different is Liberated Aria ROM and cyanogenmod 6.1.1 liberty ROM?
Both are froyo based... and performance wise?
I may consider moving into cyanogenmod 6.1.1 liberty ROM if it proves to be better. Since I just flashed the Liberated Aria ROM yesterday, I dont want to go into the hassle of flashing a new ROM having to set up the phone again.
side question:
I used Nandroid to backup my previous ROM. I always thought it also backs up my previously installed apps and settings, but when I restored my backup with the hope of having all my apps into the new Liberated Aria ROM, the only thing which was restored is the ROM itself i.e. i couldnt get my apps to be restored into Liberated Aria ROM without restoring my old ROM.

any help in getting to use Nandroid here?
thanks
In order to backup and restore apps from one ROM to another, you can use Titanium backup. Nandroid backup is a complete backup image of the phone and although it has selective restore options, it doesn't allow you to restore apps selectively.
Take your pick. The first link is as close to an official HTC Froyo release as you are going to get at this point in time, especially if you flash the HTC Hong Kong kernel.
The second link is the CyanogenMod 6.1 based on official Android Froyo 2.2 source. This is a clean ROM based on the official Android 2.2.1 source.
