1) Set up ADB by following the instructional video at

2) Gain S-Off by following the instructions at Gain S-Off On HTC Desire, Aria and Wildfire

3) Format your SD Card

4) Download Goldcard Helper from the Android Market onto your phone

5) Enter the Reverse CID at Free HTC goldcard generator | RevSkills and follow the instructions to generate a goldcard

6) Save the Goldcard image to your Desktop

7) Go to How To downgrade HTC Hero ROM – GoldCard method | Tutorials | blog.up-link.ro and follow the instructions STARTING from "Download the HxD Hex Editor from here and install it to your computer." (you don't need an asapter, you can just use the mount and unmount features) to "Once HTC Sync is installed and your phone is plugged in, pull down the notification bar on the phone and select HTC Sync. Make sure it connects to HTC Sync on the computer."

8) Download the original RUU at AT&T ROM Update v 1.25.502.12 _ 09.14.2010.exe - 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download and run it while the phone is connected to HTC Sync

9) Now you should have Android 2.1 and can root following the instructions at How To: Root the HTC Aria (Unrevoked Method) Updated 04.12.11 | TheUnlockr

Although this solution will work, there is a shorter method. Once you have run AlphaRevX and given the Aria S-OFF, you can do the following without flashing and rooting the original Aria 2.1 ROM:

[Info] After AlpharevX: install Clockworkmod, root & more - xda-developers

Doesn't take near as long and you end up with a rooted version of the Froyo 2.2.2 update.

This is my first time rooting. I successfully did the things on the video and gained S-off. Then I was trying to move on to the steps in the link "After AlpharevX" etc... and got up to step 6 (going into cmd prompt and getting as far as astboot flash recovery <recovery.img>

Now what? Clockworkmod is still not running and I still cannot root.

Help?

I tried again, but this time when I went to the command prompt and typed the image file I got an error "FAILED <status malformed <1 bytes>>"

What should I try next?
