Notsure List of what not to delete?

I was able to root (temp) my Metro Ascend with the z4root and I also downloaded the root explorer app from the market. I did this only to remove the unwaned apps that came with the phone. I don't want to mess up my phone or anything so does anyone have a list of what I should not delete. I'm am new to all this, but I notice that the .apk are followed by .odex; what are these?

I used titanium backup to uninstall the bloatware. It lists all apps installed, and you just select one, and there is an un-install option. Dunno what carrier yer using, but I have MetroPCS and I uninstalled pretty much everything the put on there except the metro navigator and the app store in case I want to re-install any of those. So far everything is OK.

I used Titanium Backup and deleted all of the metro aps except for the app store, Metro411, and MetroWEB.

Got rid off a lot of bloatware.

Did you guys do a backup first? I was reading the option where another guy deleted google navigator and now his e-mail doesn't work? I'm about to do mine, but wanted to check first.

I think it's wise to backup anything first before you uninstall it. Then you can get it back easy if you need it.

Hi Burner! I'm so sorry I missed doing that in this post. I certainly did mean to give you attribution. I did earlier today in another post. I have never quoted a post from one thread to another and didn't know you could do it.

I'll fix it right now. Thanks so much for catching this and calling it to my attention.

What software do you use to backup the apps BEFORE you remove them?

Titanium Backup. It can be downloaded from the App store.

I have been lurking for a few days now and this forum has a ton of great info.

I have a Metro Ascend which I rooted (Perm) with z4root. z4root would not download to the my phone so I just downloaded it to my laptop and transferred it to my SD card via the data cable and ran it that way. No need to DL the other browser mentioned in other posts doing it this way.

I DL'd Titanium Backup from the App store and ran it. I then backed up everything I wanted to delete before hand. Then I went back and deleted what I just backed up.

I DL'd Overclock Widget from the App store and used it to speed the CPU to the full 600Mhz.

It seems there is a bunch of conflicting posts regarding what is safe to delete. Seems some people delete things others don't or say not too and have no problems. Like I deleted Metro App Store with no problems so far. I used the above list as a guide but again others delete more and some less. If you do a backup before a delete, will you always be able to reverse it?

I would also suggest that some of the more important posts get stickied to the top of the forum if possible. They proved very helpful to me and I wish to thank everyone who contributed to those posts.

Another way to do that would be to download Dolphin Mini Browser. It allows you to download apps that the stock browser doesn't. That's how I downloaded z4root.

Good for you. Some people get over excited and forget to back up before they uninstall. Once we get an Overclock Recovery it won't be such a problem but for now it is causing a lot of phone users much grief.

I used SetCPU but I think it's half of one a dozen of the other.

Your reference to what is safe to delete is very important. Since more and more users are wanting to root so that they can remove stock applications it's important for us to compile an accurate list of what can be safely removed and what is very important NOT to remove from each carrier, Cricket and MetroPCS, as each are programmed differently and so the lists would be different.

I have Cricket so I know what that list is for my phone.

Above I have posted a list that BURNER had posted on another thread but would appreciate any comments or confirmation before I create a new and updated thread devoted to this topic.

Your reply will be very much appreciated.

Thanks for responding.

As of 12PM today, the items I have deleted so far for my Metro Ascend are:

Mobile Banking (Metro)
UNO
Gameloft Free Games
App Store (Metro)
Moco Space
Loopt
My Extras
Virtual Card
Mobile IM

I have rebooted the phone and have had no problems as of yet. It is of course only 4 hours.

I'm toying with deleting 1 or more of the mail programs but will not until I can determine what is safe. 3 mail programs is kinda crazy?

I agree with you that the info should be divided by carrier. Again, it seems like the rooting thread for each carrier, the safe to delete thread for each carrier and the ROM thread for Cricket (so far) should be stickied to the top of the Ascend forum for ease and less confusion.

Do you know if this forum supports sticky's?

Hi Robb! What is Moco space? I've seen some folks posting that they deleted it and their phones stopped functioning properly afterwards. Hope you don't have a similar problem.

Cricket Ascend only has two email programs and I'm definitely not deleting gmail and the other one doesn't take up that much space so I see no reason to do anything with it. I am a big believe in "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

As for if this forum allows stickies I'm not sure. But I know that the Mods are watching this forum now that it has become more active so I expect that one of them might show up to answer your problem. Thanks so much for your valuable input. I'll be watching to see if you report any probs with it in the future.

Cheers!

MocoSpace is some kinda chat/IM program. I think it was a Metro app tho.

Thanks! I just wondered what it was. I hope it isn't tied into Google somehow. That seems to be the key - not removing anything google related.

I figure I'll just delete in stages. Maybe take a few days off and see if anything is screwed up. Then hit a few more. I went ahead and backed up the entire phone before messing with anything. You never know. I will report any problems here if I encounter them.

Hey Joser. I'm still here. I read somewhere on this forum, can't recall the thread, that is was NOT safe to uninstall Canvas. Maybe a search might turn it up. I recall someone explaining why.

I can't find it but I think I read it in a very long thread in the Android Forum pertaining to LauncherPro. When the Developer put an expiration in the freeware it created a problem for many users and the only way they could get their phones to work again was through canvas.

So I guess it isn't a good idea to uninstall it unless you have another launcher you can rely on in any unforeseen event.

Are you working up the list for what you can and cannot delete after rooting for the step by step thread? I wondered if that was why you asked the question.

I think if there's any doubt it's best to leave it out.

And also, you can always go back and edit it later.

Just a follow up:
Still going strong with no problems after a day and a few hours. Like I said above I removed the Metro App Store, thats the 1 that had me worried. Maybe it will affect me on the 2.2 update. Will see.

Please do keep me updated so I can edit the Step by Step Rooting thread in the post of what you can and can't delete on the Metro Ascend.

Thanks so much for the update today!

I uninstalled canvas 2 days ago and haven't had any problems since. You just have to reboot after uninstalling because you get alot of force closes. After that it should all be ok.
I'm now using ADW launcher and everything seems to be at least 20% faster.

Yeah, that is why I'm keeping my eye on it. I will follow up. I was gonna do the next batch of deletes but with all the rumor of 2.2 coming I figure I might just wait and see. I'm interested to see if it updates since I'm rooted and have removed some bloat.

@Nesdroid - Thanks for the info. I have been using Launcher Pro but left Canvas installed. I just deleted Canvas using Root Explorer and rebooted. It seems a little more responsive now.

I am just going to leave it considering 2.2 is going to give us major speed increases anyway, especially in the response department.

Robb
Add Boingo and Pocket Express to the above list. So far so good. I have a question about Titanium Backup (free version). Before removing any apps I backed them up with Titanium. I then un-installed them using Titanium. If I wanted to re-install them how would I do it?

You just open up Tit. B/U and touch the backup/restore tab, scroll all the way to the bottom and you will see them there. Then select the 'restore' option.

I would be very careful in deleting your email programs. I've seen a lot of probs from Metro users uninstalling these accounts.

Woah Woah Guys. Deleting ANY system apps, especially those that are from your carrier, like VZW Navigator, Sprint Nascar or anything like that, pretty much guarantees you will NEVER get another OTA update in your life if you don't put them back where they were and reset the UNIX permissions correctly (This is confirmed for practically all android phones on VZW, Sprint, and T-mobile, cannot comment on Metro).

The files should be 'Frozen' either through Titanium Backup PREMIUM, Bloat Freezer, or manually through the command line, that way they can be easily defrosted with one click when you want to get an OTA and your carrier will have no idea.

Bloat Freezer - Freeze your Pre Installed System Apps

THIS IS WHY BLOAT FREEZER WAS WRITTEN, IT HAPPENED TO ME!!!!

I really hope that none of you guys are expecting to get the next OTA on your phone if you don't have backups/a list of exactly what you deleted, I cringe every time I see someone suggesting a delete/uninstall of a /system app to someone who doesnt know better, the blind leading the blind.

The restore option is not there. The only option is to go to the backup/restore tab and then choose menu, batch and then choose restore missing apps with data or restore missing apps and all system data. The problem is that I would need to restore all 12 apps that I deleted.

Here is my answer:

10. For some apps I don't have the "Restore" button. Why ?
  • This is probably a system app that you don't have anymore. System apps are part of your ROM, so Titanium Backup will only backup their data (not the apps themselves). For this reason, if you backup a system app and then switch to a ROM where that app is missing, Titanium Backup obviously cannot restore the data for it. You have a data-only backup. Before you can restore the data you'll need to install that system app again, either by reinstalling your ROM or by copying its apk manually into /system/app.
  • If you had disabled the "Normal apps (apk)" and/or "Protected apps (apk)" options in the Backup settings, then all backups of your apps will be data-only, in which case you'll need to re-install these apps manually before you can restore their data.
So the Bloatware I deleted was part of the ROM. I will need to re-install the apk for each and then the data from Titanium.

I don't need the programs but I wanted to point out that just backing up with Titanium is not going to give you your app back if you un-installed it.

Looks like I have more reading to do.

Exactly, freezing is really the only way to go in my opinion, either through Titanium Backup Premium, or through Bloat Freezer. I have seen hundreds of posts that thought TB was backing up something that it wasn't and were relying on it, only to be disappointed.

I now agree with you 100%. The instructions for removing bloatware should be noted as such also. I'm capable of either restoring the apps or re-flashing the phone back to stock so I'm not worried about me. I'm more concerned with those that don't know enough or are not capable.

Thanks for chiming in here.

I am reading this and will be modifying the Step by Step Rooting Guide just as soon as I verify that this is correct.

I am interested in knowing if either of you have the Pro version of Titatium Backup.

Sure! It's in the Huawei Ascend Forum and they moved it to: All things root. It's called:

Step by Step Instructions for Rooting your Huawei Ascend (or something like that).
