Just wanted to say thanks to all involved in the rooting guide. Now enjoying a much faster and enjoyable and albeit satisfying experience with the hauwei ascend. It took a bit of tinkering on my behalf before all instructions started to make sense because there was definitely a bit of confusion before a zen type of acceptance of all things rooting. Got to change and delete all the annoying features and bloatware.
But I was wondering, this particular huawei ascend is off the metropcs carrier. Is it possible to use the rooted phone with another carrier or is there a separate possible way to achieve the same outcome of unlocking the phone and using with another carrier?
For anyone, this is the same PG 0912 build with the 748mhz kernel, but stripped of the stuff I personally dont use as mentioned above in my previous comment. If you want any of the stuff I deleted out of it as mentioned above, go to PlayfulGods wiki and download the original.
This link doesn't want to work for me... I try to dl it and it immediately says dl complete, but filesize is "?". I'll try a different browser...
Ok, problem solved. Mediafire must not like Opera, also probably doesn't help that I'm on a shitty wifi network and have "Turbo" enabled right now.

Root it, install CWM, BACKUP EVERYTHING YOU CAN, flash the Rom you wish to try. Everyone has their preference.

Hi I've been trying to root my MetroPCS Huawei phone following the step by step instructions but still no luck. I download the z4 app but it just freezes my phone. Please Help
Hi Shiny,
I did upgrade my phone to 2.2.2 So I assume the one I've been trying isn't going to work and I have to use the gingerbread one you just linked? is it relativity the same process?
I finally found a thread where people were saying to use the dolphin browser to download the original apk mentioned in this thread and got further than I have. It started like it was running the exploit and even restarted my phone but Titan Backup says that it's still unrooted.
Btw when I click the link you gave, my AV freaks out.

Z4root only roots 2.1. To root 2.2 and 2.3 you have to use ginger break. Yeah your anti virus will freak out because of it being able to root/exploit your phone. But it is a safe download. Thats on my mediafire and its the same gingerbreak I used. And yeh its the same process. Download it, install it, open the app and click root. Let it do its thing then your phone will reboot and once it reboots youll be rooted.
hello all I would first off like to thank everyone for thier dedication to the as others say "crappy ascend" I love it! im newly registered but love this site its got it,all!! ok..my question..
I followed the instructions I hv everything downloaded but I cannot get my phone to boot up in recovery (is the back up needed?) it stays stuck on the huawei screen I read somewhere that the ascend cannot back up the stock Rom...the opition to wipe everything only showed up when I was in a wifi zone (i donot have wifi) but I DL flash recovery 3xxx (something like that) im wondering if im doing something wrong?
when I manually booted it (using the button combo vol up end power) it says unpacking failed and my button lights flash ive re rooted my phone and tried again it did the same thing sorry this is so long ive read this thread for a month or so bfore I decided to flash and I wanted to fully understand what im doing before I brick my phone on accident bc I hv to internet connection to fix a brick thank you for ur friendly and helpful answers
if I need to explain more im more than happy to just email me bc I think a one on one is easier for me to learn bc I ask lots of questions if I dont understand but ive read most of this thread I thought I understood :-D

To boot into clockwork recovery its the send key (all the way to the left) volume up and tap the power. Also how did you flash the recovery? If you are using rom manager it doesnt always flash the first time. Hit the flash recovery a couple times to be sure it flashed.

If you have access to a computer you can try to do whats called fastboot it on.
Make sure you have usb debugging checked in settings>apps>development of the phone. To get into Fastboot mode - end key, volume down and tap the power. should stay on the white huawei screen.Download this FastbootCWR-3.0.2.8.zip extract the files to your desktop open it and double click the following files (theres 3 different ones one for linux, one for mac, one for windows. run the ones that match your os on your comp)
adb
fastboot
install recovery
once done unplug and pull out the battery and wait a couple seconds and then try to reboot into cwr by the send key, volume up and tap the power.

You cant use that file on your phone. You can only fastboot like that on a PC. The stock browser should of downloaded from it either way. Its usually only Opera that wont download from MediaFire.

I have a Huawei ascend, I just downloaded the upgrade from eclair to froyo from the metro PCS website. Now I can't root my phone. I've tried Z4 root, Super1click and gingerbreak. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Gingerbreak should work. I'm not on MetroPCS, so I'm not completely sure. Try this version.

Hey guys! I'll start by saying thanks to everyone for being so active on this thread. After reading all of the instructions and posts, I felt a lot more comfortable with the idea of rooting my phone.
However, I am running into a slight issue...
I went to the link provided above to download Z4 root as instructed. I tried on my original mobile browser, and it failed, so I then tried to do so in Dolphin Mini.
The DL in Dolphin Mini was successful, but when I try to run the download, I get an error message, saying "No Application can be found to open this file."
I've searched a multitude of other forums to find out if there was something I could do to get around this, but to no avail.
Can anyone help me out?
I am using Cricket, SW version 2.1-update 1, if this helps any.

Rooting Issue
I'm having a rooting issue with my Huawei Ascend M860. I upgraded from Eclaire to the Froyo last week, and ended up upgrading to the 2.2.2 version with out knowing exactly WHAT version I was upgrading to, or even honestly what it was I was even doing. I've been reading various forums, and watching various Youtube videos. I've been downloading and deleting applications for about 3 weeks now, and as of right now, I've downloaded Rom Manager (Free), Dolphin Browser, Free Advanced Task Manager, and I've downloaded and deleted/wiped the 3 different GingerBreak versions so many times I'm almost about to give up my quest for CM7.
When I had the Eclaire Version, it was easy, I downloaded Z4Root, and I was rooted. Now that I've got Froyo, I'm starting to wish I hadn't upgraded. Are there ANY alternatives that I should seek? I'm open to opinions, and follow instructions pretty good if you have any advice.
DO I need TBU? IT TAKES UP ALOT OF ROOM AND IT SEEMS cwm does the same thing and does more titanium just backups apps
When you do a nandroid backup with CWM you're making a complete copy of your phone, including ROM, settings, contacts, texts, apps, data, and everything that isn't on your sdcard. Titanium Backup will backup your apps with the data associated with them to a file on your sdcard. With TB you can re-install all your apps when you flash ROMs, wipe your system, or anything else for that matter as long as you re-root and install TB again. Backing up with CWM won't let you pull certain things out of the backup to re-install again easily without an app like App Extractor (which will let you pull the apps out, but not everything works, like your text messages and whatnot). So while you don't need something like Titanium Backup or AntTek App Manager, they sure make flashing a whole lot easier.

There have been quite a few people saying that they can't root their MetroPCS Froyo for a little while now. I'm wondering if something hasn't been changed in the ROM.

If you want CM7, flash back to stock 2.1, root and go from there.

How do I flash back to the 2.1 version? I'm a complete "noob" when it comes to this. I'm the guy who woke up one morning and decided he wanted to update his phone and had to google it. lol. In my search though, I learned a little though. Directions are easy to follow though.

Take a gander through the Huawei Ascend - All Things Root Guide sticky in this forum. In it you'll find the link to the How to Flash the Huawei Ascend to Stock thread, among other goodies.

I haven't looked yet, but i will have to do that Scur, thanks for the advice. However at this point, I think I've over loaded my phone with app's lol. I've used a LOT of it's internal mem. Although I have switched some things to my sim, it's not freeing up to much. it's functional to a degree. It's not to quick at this point though. Hence my reason to Root, lol. Again, Thank you again for the advice!

Check out a2sd. It let's you expand your memory onto a partition on your sdcard. CM7 has it integrated into the ROM. It has to be one of the apps that makes the biggest differences on the Ascend.
