The flash will take approximately 3 seconds
8. Power off the phone.
9. Holding the UP Volume button and END call button and then the power button will boot your phone into recovery mode. From their you can make a backup of your Phone.

The following is for those who plan to install the Icarus Mod:
IMPORTANT: Before partitoning your SDCard for Icarus, make a backup copy of the card, as the partition command will erase the SDCard.
Now you copy the IcarusMod zip file to the card and using the install zip file menu item in the recovery menu.
You should now be ready to install Icarus.

I have people PMing me for the step by step instructions on how to flash the CWR. I created this thread so that they can find the instructions easily as on the Icarus Thread they are mixed in with Icarus stuff.

I planned to do that actually but I did this stuff at 5AM this morning and some thing just simply 'eluded' me.

It's basically self explanatory...but to attempt to explain it, it is a custom R.O.M. (read only memory) that allows you to basically back up in a very unique and specialized way, your entire system. This was created for two reasons: 1) to make it safe for users who are modding their phones to be able to boot into clockwork recovery to safely return their phones to normal and also as a preparation for other custom R.O.M.s
This may not be the most accurate definition out there but it's the best, as I understand it, example I can give.
Anyone who wishes to either change or embellish upon it...please be my guest.

When flashing or installing custom mods - you should #1 trust the source
and #2 Do exactly (to a tee) as the dev of the mod instructs, not missing a step. If it is specified that you install CWR you should make sure it is the correct version and do it just as the dev states.
The CWR version that you can d/ld to your phone via Rom Manager is not the same one that I am referring to.
Fair enough Jazz. I've just been reading a lot of people are very happy with the Icarus and was thinking of trying it, but then seen this post about Clockwork and wanted to make sure one wasnt needed for the other

The Icarus is awesome for those who have installed it correctly, even with the slight glitch re: mms. The dev will specify which version of CWR is needed for each custom rom, including Icarus (of which there is now more than one version).
I don't have access to a computer currently so do you have to have a computer in order to have clockwork recovery mod on the acsend? And what do I have to do if I don't thx.?.?

It depends on why you want CWM. If you only want it so you can do a recovery you can get it by getting the app called: Rom Manager from the market. It has an option for creating CWM Recovery. But don't attempt any other mods with it. To do that you will need a computer and a different CWM.
If you don't have a computer you will not be able to install any custom roms.
Maybe you can borrow one from a friend, in the event you need it for an upgrade or custom rom.
i cant install clockwork mod. i downloaded from a different link and it wont work. i need help and pointed in maybe the right download and install instructions. sort of new to this. it said it worked in my prompt on mac but tried next step and didnt work

Installing ClockWorkMod Recovery 2.5.1.8 via your Desktop PC
For those of you that are not familiar or comfortable using the terminal on your phone or having problems installing cwm via terminal, here's a guide on how to flash cwm via your desktop pc.
*Note* Phone must be in debugging mode- Go to Settings > Application settings > Development and check USB debugging.
1) Download the CWM Recovery file located at the bottom of this post and unzip it to your desktop
2) Attach phone to USB
3) Power Phone Off
4) Enter Fastboot (press End Call + Volume Down while powering on the phone). Your Huawei Ascend will boot to a white background with the Huawei logo in the center.
5)Run the script relevant to your OS from the CWM Recovery folder that you extracted earlier.
A) For Linux users - Run the "install-recovery-linux.sh"
B ) For MAC users - Run the "install-recovery-mac.sh"
C) For Windows users - Run the "install-recovery-windows.bat"
6) When you run the appropriate script, you will see a command prompt window open and disappear. When the window disappears, CWM is installed.
7) Now take the battery out of your phone for 10 seconds and replace.
Now you are able to boot into CWM recovery. To boot into recovery, press Send + Volume Up while powering on the phone and keep Send + Volume Up pressed while booting. Now you should be in CWM recovery.
i cant get the phone to go into v2 needed for the install of icarus its still at v3. do i need to uninstall the old one or something? i had rom manager with v3 installed i unistalled the rom manager just to c if it wud work but wen i went into recovery mode it was still displaying v3.

Okay, Stupid question from me. I wonder can you use these same steps in order to get back to the clockwork 3xxx? I have the 2xx already because of me having Icarus 1.1. I'm wondering if you know how I should proceed with going to a newer version? Would it be easier for me to just revert to my back up of the stock rooted before I'd even flashed?
how do i unistall the old one? i unistalled rom manager but it still comes up as cwm v3.
That is covered in a thread here somewhere. It's either a clockwork thread or the Icarus one. Sorry I don't have the time right now to look it up and post the link.
Rain, yes you would use the same steps we did for icarus but you would have to use the 3.xxx zip file.

I'm in the process of flashing a Cricket phone for my cousin. I'm kind of stuck right now!!!!
I have rooted his Huawei Ascend with Z4root apk and I'm currently trying to flash clockwork mod recovery v.2.5.1.8 as I had already downloaded recovery v.3.0.xx. It doesn't matter what I do I can't gwt 2.5.1.8! I have tried clearing the cache and deleting 3.0.x.x. and everytime I install the 2.5.x.x version it always defaults back to 3.0.x.x!!!!! Does anyone have an idea as to how to bypass this, i.e unrooting or something?!!!!!! PLEASE HELP! I'm SO close to flashing Icarus on it. If I had known from the start that clockwork mod 2.5.1.8 was the only one I could use I would have been finished by now! (
Thanx for ALL the help I have had in doing all this on my own! Youguys ROCK!!!!!

I am confused about whether the ROM Manager's CWM works on the Ascend or if we need the 2.5xx CWM.
This is what I have done in an attempt to flash froyo 2.2...
I rooted my Cricket Ascend with z4root. I downloaded ROM Manager and Flashed CWM Recovery giving it superuser permissions.I then fixed permissions.
My next challenge is to backup. So, I went into Rom Manager and tapped Reboot into Recovery...My phone stays on the Huawei screen and does not go into recovery mode... (if I did it right it should be "green"?)
So if I take my battery out it'll reboot fine, but not into recovery.
Any suggestions?
I see people hitting the VOL UP and Exit button (rightmost soft button) and I see people hitting the VOL DOWN and Call (leftmost soft button) what is the difference.
I did try the VOL UP and Exit buttong and got a message saying:
Unpacking (Empty status bar) Update failed...
I was not at a wifi spot... Is this the combination to take me into recovery?
Thanks

When you input everything into the open terminal emulator does it do anything noticable so I know if that step worked aftet inputing last line and hitting enter

It appears that his internal storage is too low on space to finish flashing in terminal emulator!
How can I go about getting more space on his internal phone storage without deleting anything important?!!!!

Since you are flashing (you did a back up of the apps right) uninstall any apps that were downloaded. You will have to re-install anyway.

If something doesn't work you Will get an error. Look something like this.
I hold diown vol up end call then push power on. It then says firmware update step 1/2 unpacking update failed. When I get home from work later I will try it all over again

Its not end call but rather call. End call volume down is for fast boot.

Have you ever been able to get to it, because the first few times i tried did not work and i had to run the file again. make sure the black box comes up, your doing it on the comp right? It's the easiest way to do it.

The Huawei Ascend is MetroPCS and Cricket's extremely affordable Android handset, coming in at $150 off-contract. For that kind of money, don't expect much in terms of bang for buck. You'll get a 3.5 inch HVGA display, a 3.2 megapixel c... Read More
