you have to flash the gapps. zip like you did cm7, dont unzip it, just move it to your sdcard and boot into recovery and flash it.
Also, when trying to install CWM - I get the phone to the huwaei screen, and when I plug the USB in, nothing happens, there's no way for me to drag it over or extract it into the phones folder

Just stays on the Huwaei screen and nothing else
you suppose to extract the cwm.rar to your desktop, and open it and run fastboot-windows and than run install-recovery-windows, after that finish just pull the battery wait 10 sec and put battery back in and boot into recovery.

you need to flash gapps, so you can have your market on your phone and also to get gmail and other google apps.

After reading many times this guide I decided to jumped into it, the problem I have is that my CWM 2.5.1.8 gets stuck at formatting cache (and also restoring), I was able to flash it back to stock, but I really want to try CM7, any ideas what the problem could be?

no, sounds like you install 2.2 from metro, to install cm7 you have to vol up, call button, and tap power.
power off phone and reboot into cwm (VOLUME ROCKER UP+CALL BUTTON+POWER)
use your track ball to select (in order) the following commands
wipe data/ factory reset
wipe cache
advanced
wipe dalvik cache
press the back button (the arrow) on your phone.
under mounts and storage, format following...
boot
data
system
cache
press the back button (the arrow) on your phone.
install .zip from sd
chose zip from sd.
choose cm7.zip
choose gapps-cm7.zip

cause cm7 doesnt load that way you said it did when you press vol up, from what i seen you post, you just install metro 2.2 again.

First off, amazing post! Just started the process and it is quite easy, so props to that.
But...
I cannot get the multiple options for formatting in CWM when trying to install CM6.
The instructions say wipe data/ factory reset and wipe cache which is fine and the options for that are there, but that's where the similarities end.
I don't have advanced or wipe dalvik cache. The only options I do have are "Reboot System", "somethingorother SD card update.zip" (which doesn't get me anywhere and just puts me back to the main menu when I pick it), "Wipe Data/Factory Reset", and Wipe Cache"
I've followed the instructions very carefully so as not to kill my only phone, so everything seems ok so far.
Any help would be much appreciated. And does this mean I have to start all over or just pick up where I left off?
Thanks again!
edit: Forgot to add I do not have the "back up" option either and the text in CWM is blue not green. Relevant?

you need to fastboot your phone and run this CWM 3.0.0.5.rar if the screen was blue and black instead of orange than you didnt install cwm.

Just for a couple quick questions:
1. Is there anything special I need to do now for Wifi, Market or any of that?
2. I downloaded the CM6 that was posted on the guide. Should I be worried about there being an update or newer version? Or is there a way to get it updated through the rom?
3. Why do you guys rock the casbah so hard?

lol, no just make sure you make a backup before flashing cm6 just in case, but make sure you download the gapps also, the one for cm6 not the gapps for cm7, and market, wifi, mms and all that will work right after you flash cm6, Good Luck!!!

Done and done. Damn that was easy. I'm trying to register my phone for CM updates right now, taking a bit but meh.
Now to completely relearn a phone I've had for a while... how awesome is that!
Well, I've got another wee problem. Everything s setup perfect with no issues. I can text, get web access, wifi, but I cannot make outgoing calls. My signal has been real spotty and touchy since I got my phone on CM6, but I didn't try to make a call until now and it immediately ends it saying it was lost.
Obviously this is a phone so ideally I'd like to make calls and would hate to have to revert back to the old slowness. So again, any help is much appreciated.
Hey. Just did the CWM Recovery on a Macbook, and had problems on the last step - had to manually load the .sh contents in the terminal, and point them to recovery.img (since the recovery image was not named correctly in the shell)

i havent tried CM6 but i for one have CM7 w/Metro, & it totally ROCKS!!! no plan i going w/2.2 anytime soon. oh by the way my alarm clock started working again, WOOHOO!
Just want to say thank you to all of you. I've been lurking through the forums for a couple weeks now, trying to get the balls to root/rom my phone... I was planning on doing it this Friday, but got a wild hair last night and did it. So far I've followed the instructions word for word, I'm now on icarus1.1 and loving it. I'll give it a try for a few days then move on to cm6.
Thanks again to all the extremely helpful people here.

So I was on here a week back or so trying to get my phone to work because it would keep freezing on the loadup screen and then it finally went through and worked and I thought I was done and even posted on here that it worked but honestly it worked for about 5 minutes and then just started restarting itself and then almost loading all the way up and then restarting again. I kept playing with it and trying CM6 and CM7 but it just keeps freezing on the screen. I finally went back to stock so I could use the phone but I would love to have CM6 or CM7 and have probably tried reinstalling it about 2-3 dozen times hoping it will work but only occasionally get it to the opening screen to push the android guy to set up google befoer it freezes on me again and goes into a restarting cycle.
PLEASE help me if you no what else I can try. I have tried using all the different CWM versions and have been using the newest versions of CM6 and CM7 I can find on the prepaidandroid site.
#./flash_image recovery recovery.img (enter)
The flash will take approximately 3 seconds
8. Power off the phone.
9. Holding the UP Volume button and END call button and then the power button will boot your phone into recovery mode. From their you can make a backup of your Phone.
Ok so I tried your emulator idea and the links were dead..i found em on a different forum but its still not working. Im thinking a computers the only way to go. Thanks amyways tho
where can i find an updated link to the gapps? that's the only thing I havent been able to download.
and of course booting to debug mode isnt happening. it just does a regular reboot? i'm doing voldown+end+power. i tap them, i hold them. is booting to debug the same as booting to recovery?
EDIT: I've figured it out and have found success! Just had to put on my geek hat
currently doing initial setup
