Do I have to back everything up or am I good? I just rooted a Samsung Admire and didn't have to back anything up, I would assume this is the case here as well.
Running it anyways... and it just stops during the install of the permanent root...? It stops unexpectedly.
Tried to install GingerBreak as well, and it tells me that "Data is in an unexpected area".
Someone save me... this MyMetro crap is killing me and my device. I'll pay you with cheeseburgers.

Reason: update
What OS are you on? I'm assuming if you're on metro, it's 2.2. So you'll need to use gingerbreak, I think it's version 1.2. If it doesn't work, your only options are flash back to stock and use z4root or flash another rom via CWM Recovery. In which case you will need to back everything up.

z4root is *supposed* to work on 2.1 when it comes to the Ascend, and Gingerbreak is *supposed* to work on 2.2 for the same. If neither one is working, my personal recommendation is flashing CWM to the phone via the fastboot method from a PC, which you should be able to find instructions for in Tokenpoke's Ultimate Ascend thread, then flashing PG's PlayfulMod (rooted and deodexed stock Metro 2.2 with a2sd already added).
Yes, you can actually flash CWM this way without rooting, which you are having trouble with anyway, so you can actually kill two (or more) birds with one stone this way. You'll have a faster than stock ROM with a2sd added, not to mention already rooted, and you'll have CWM installed.
Sure did..right in sequence ...funny thing is I am connected to WiFi but when setting up the gmail account it tells me there is no connection.
I miss you z4...
If I was having a bunch of problems after a flash, I'd get clean downloads and reflash the phone. That usually fixes a ton of stuff for me that seem random.

We are similar in that aspect..why fry your brain trying to fix it if perhaps the download files were the issue. Mission aborted...back to square one

Good Times I actually soft bricked it(stuck at Huawei screen) but.....
Clean installs in this order:
CWM
CWM 3.0.0.5
CM 7
gapps (reboot)
flashed metroff mms fix
Basically followed Tokenpoke's to the T(pun intended)
Tried to set up the google account/market using both my account as well as my sons and this is the result:
Wifi shows conneted(Its a good one-working on my Esteem )
*228 is a go
Going to stop by my favorite MPSC store(non corporate) and see if we can get it activated.
Any input on a fix would be appreciated. Don't get why it wont connect
Update: Activated and everything working..woohhoo

So basically you installed everything, and it didn't work unless you were connected to the carrier?
The phone I am going to root does not belong to me, so I want to make sure I'm not screwing anything up If this were MY device, I would be doing any/everything I could to gain root. So I suppose I will just try to do what you described above, and since the phone is already activated, I should be in the clear.

Correct...z4 had worked before for me but no longer would.
If it makes you feel any better I actually deleted the whole Os from the phone..stuck at Huawei screen@boot(hehe) and loaded everything anew .
The phone was not activated at the time. Took to my guy at his metro store and boom activated
Let me know how it goes..will be around
The Huawei Ascend is MetroPCS and Cricket's extremely affordable Android handset, coming in at $150 off-contract. For that kind of money, don't expect much in terms of bang for buck. You'll get a 3.5 inch HVGA display, a 3.2 megapixel c... Read More
