Default Capability of USB port.

I like many others i work with have been wondering what the capability of the female port on our tablets can do I.e use plug and play devices. so far large 1tb external hdd's will work. some mice and keyboards as well. my situation is i would like to use my Common Access Card reader to login to my mil email using my tablet. I have tried and when my email re-directs me to login I get a blank screen. im trying not to pay $300+ for a bluetooth smart card reader (intended for phones) when i have a perfectly good female port. i included a photo so anyone not familiar can understand what i want to do and possibly offer help.
