Hi, i am looking to sell my laptop and get a tablet as its replacement, i am a bit unsure between the Asus transformer infinity tf700t and the samsung galaxy note 10.1.
I am looking to be able to connect an external hard drive, does either have a proper usb port to do this?
does anyone know if there are any advantages of either?
i have read reviews saying that even though the asus is more powerful, the samsung is actually more smoother, could this be because of the extra ram? im not sure why asus only made this unit with 1gb and not 1.5 or 2?
does anyone know if there is going to be a 32gb version of either machine, i can only see a 16gb samsung and up to now i can only find sites referring to the asus as 64gb?

I have the 32gb gray infinity, and though the tablet doesn't have a standard usb port, my official keyboard dock for it does have one and has allowed me to use usb thumb drives with no problems. Though my dock is actually for tf201 prime and not the infinity, but I'm sure the official 700 dock has at least one as well.

The Sammy will be smoother because it has a lower res screen and it may have a more powerful processor too, though I have no idea about that. To be honest though, Tegra 3 is perfectly capable of running 1080p smoothly. The problem is that Android ICS handicaps it somewhat - Jelly Bean should go a long way to fixing that.
The infinity will be fine.I have it with the keyboard and has connected to any hard drive I have used, with no issues.with the note you will have to buy an adaptor to connect anything by usb.I had the prime before this and highly recommend them both..they keyboard also gives that extra battery that the note can't..

No im not im usually in the samsung galaxy s2 forum.
I would be more than happy with the extra 32g myself, im just trying to keep the cost of it down and think the 32g version would be fine.

Huh? The only thing that's standard is the QWERTY key layout. Some countries have an AZERTY layout instead, and then every country has its own symbols/ arrangements. Hardly 'standard everywhere'.

This is very true. I'm in Thailand and the keys look very cluttered with the both the English and Thai symbols on them.
I am looking at a new tablet as well. The Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Asus Infinity, were my top choices. I currently have an Acer Iconia, and it has been great. But its almost time for something new. Which of these is the better tablet? I was looking pretty seriously at the Galaxy Note, but the gal at Best Buy started showing me the Infinity, which is now the front runner for my new tablet, primarily because of the keyboard and USB port.
I've been researching the same thing with these two tablets.
In a nutshell:
Note: Exynos 1.4 GHz Quad core that is blazing past anything out there currently at stock. In testing, it gets beat out only twice in benchmarks - once by the iPad 3rd gen and once by the Infinity. However, it also has its own issues - it's running regular old 1280 X 800 resolution, has a 5 MP backside camera (only does 720p video) and a 1.9 MP front side cam. Other good things: It does BT 4.0 with A2DP, has a MicroUSB Hub and has 2 GB of RAM and comes in 16 / 32 / 64 GB flavors with expandable storage up to 64 GB as well.
The Infinity shines in some areas, but is not nearly as hot in others. The display is an IPS+ 1920 x 1200 resolution, 8 MP backside camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a 2.0 front facing cam. It only does BT 3.0 with A2DP and EDR, and only comes in 32 and 64 GB models, only upgradeable with 32 GB max microSD, but with the docking keyboard you get an additional 4 hours of battery life, and it comes with ASUS's OCing utility for performance, balanced, and power saving modes.
I want the best of both worlds, and I'm not getting it - it's either one or the other, However, I'm not sure if all of the connectivity with the Note and the stylus really make it worthwhile for such a crappy display.
I'm still tempted for the Infinity b/c it looks great and works great, and I've never been a touchwiz fan. Then again, I'm mostly a moto guy, and the Xyboard is just out-classed.
If the tegra can overcome it's current limitations (and soon) the only thing really holding this bad boy back is going to be the combined WiFi and BT chip, which can cause issues with audio streams being out of sync when video playback occurs.
Bottom line: I love nVidia, but I'm taking a chance on the Note b/c of its high RAM and all out speed. If the Infinity had 1 GB more RAM I'd drop the Note - but 1 GB is not going ot be enough for me. I push my BIONIC past its limits every day.
Regarding the original post, I'm not sure a tablet can replace a laptop. It depends on what you're doing with it of course. The Infinity can do a lot, but I still go to the lap top for serious research on the web, (multiple windows with multiple tabs while toggling back and forth between a text editor or word processing program), photo editing, some simple CAD applications, and maybe a couple other things I could probably live without.
What the tablet is great for is portability, battery life, and the ability to have it in my lap without it getting hot. It has a much better screen for reading text than does my lap top. It also carries with it a very high "cool" factor. The ability to customize with apps is a definite bonus and I rather enjoy tweeking the tablet experience to make it the best for me. The keyboard dock expands its versatility exponentially but it is still a tablet.

And after thinking about it for a couple of days, I end up with not the Note, but the Infinity. (Y'all knew I was gonna do this since I only posted in this forum and not the Note forum, right? Right??? )
Ordered mine Sunday night, it arrived Wednesday, I picked up the dock, and the leather case arrived today. Too bad I haven't found a case that will handle the Infinity in it's dock though.
I am loving this machine, and am loving that the tether between it and the BIONIC works flawlessly (BIONIC being on an ICS leak).

For those of you that don't know me, I joined AF back in Oct 2009, just before the pivotal release of the Motorola DROID, which got me started into my addiction for all things Android. Unlike a lot of people, I don't swap devices every 6 months or year, I keep mine the full length of contract, so I'm on my second Android Phone now and this is my first Android-powered tablet. However, I don't just use my phones -I test, push the envelope, root, break root, even soft brick them, all (usually) in the name of testing.
I'm currently most active in the BIONIC forum, as well as Computers and IT, and D1, of course, but you'll see a lot of me in here - ASUS is new territory for me and I have a bit of learning to do.

Worth noting that I have a SanDisk Mobile Ultra 64GB microSDHC class 10 card that works brilliantly in the Infinity. Model is SDSDQUA-064G-A11A and Amazon has them for about 60 USD.

Same here. I have the exact same model.
I read something about the 64GB version having a limit on the microSD card capacity, which seemed to be a petty and arbitrary thing for ASUS to do. My 32GB model handles a 64GB microSD card and a 64GB full sized SD card (also Class 10) in the keyboard, no problem, BTW.
I too was thinking I'd go home with a Samsung Note 10.1, but the HD screen resolution and other features like the docking keyboard option swayed me. Frankly I was underwhelmed by the Samsung. Nothing wrong with it, but no real personality either.
Since I have a pro video camera (one of the reasons that I liked the display), the tiny built-in cameras are adequate. No matter how big or small the camera spec numbers get, the bottom line is that you're not going to be able to replace a DIGISUPER 100xs with a phone or tablet, no matter how good the numbers seem.
Note that US models might have 2.4GHz Wi-Fi channels 12, 13 and 14 disabled, and some 5.8GHz channels enabled that might get you a visit from Ofcom. You should be able to get a radio firmware file that's correct for your region, though.

Before you go ahead and grab an Infinity, wait and see if Google really are announcing the Nexus 10 on October 29th. If the rumours are true, not only will the screen be almost as dense as a Galaxy S3 or iPhone, you can be sure it'll have the internals to power it (while the Tegra 3 CAN do 1080p, I think it's being pushed to its very limits - things like app switcher animations aren't very smooth, whereas you can pretty much bet Google is going to ensure they have the right hardware for that insane resolution).
