They say the Mustang does a real nice job with the live rear axle (track pack option I believe it's called). When I owned my 06 GTO, while I loved the IRS, I hated the wheel hop. I always used to tell the Ford faithful that regardless of how well they develop the rear solid axle, if you hit a bump in mid curve, the car will still get a little more fubar than a car with a full IRS setup.

The 40k boss 302 with a live rear axle beats an R8 around laguna seca. I love the IRS as much as anyone, but I think the live vs IRS is more design and setup than actual performance. ...sorry...on vikadin...why are we debating cars in a what do you drive thread? Just post pics!

That's it. I'm not sure where but on a track (and even then not so sure) you'd be able to use that much horsepower. Would be fun to take on the Autobahn though. Speaking of, I sure wish the U.S. had a version of the Autobahn here, or that our drivers would at least adopt some of the Autobahn rules, like if you're in the far left lane and someone gets behind you, you move over to the right lane, you know the common sense rules......
Hense why I asked some simple questions about his car that he should know right off the top of his head, but notice he has not been back to this thread since I called him out. I got warned twice for it so ill just leave it at that.
800HP to the wheels would not get traction below 100MPH, hell I'm only pushing 600 to the wheels and I break my tires loose in 3rd with 315's out back.

Currently have a 2004 GTO cosmos purple. I've had it for 2 years now. I bought it used for damn cheap with only 19k on the odo. It's my DD and surprisingly good in the snow with Blizzak ws70s. Only mods are a Diablo Sport tune and brakes, along with some leo countermeasures. Also in the family are a 2009 Impreza wrx hatchback and a 2003 outback.

Debating on making my Cobra that I posted earlier in the thread a track( mostly ecxept for a few fun runs on the streets against some shit talkers) car. Thinking of going single turbo setup, maybe twin, not sure yet. complete engine tear down and rebuild and cranking up the boost, cage it and try to hit nines. As much as I love my 6-speed, I am probably going to have to dump it. Not easy to hit 9's while rowing gears. I'm sure the trap speed would be great but can only imagine my 60 ft times. lol. Still not sure if I want to do this but if I do , i'm looking for somewhere around 1000RWHP.
Then pickup a new GT500 for a daily. Only problem with that is I am going to get the itch to modify that too. I think I can restrain myself to a few small mods on the GT500 and be happy.
Ahh what to do.. what to do..

I'd go with the Camaro ZL1 instead. Going to be slightly less expensive and with 580hp it should be one quick stock machine and faster than the GT500. Also, I don't think I could go back to a live rear axle car. Just seems so 1930's to me now.

I wouldn't waste my money on the ZL1 (this coming from a GM guy). I'd just wait for the 650hp supercharged 5.8L 2013 GT500

Yeah, but it's still a Ford........ I've never been a fan of them. Like the article says, traction is going to be a big problem. I'd still bet on the Camaro any day -- especially since it will be higher volume and a lower price.

Now, if you really wanted to go out, you could get the SLP Camaro with the 750hp engine.

The car I want - or some variant of it (which is why I'm back in school to get my Masters and then my Ph. D.):

I have to agree, the SLP Camaro is awesome. The only thing I don't like about the new Camaros is that there are way too many of them around here, and 90% of them are V6. It just kinda ruined them for me.. Although I have seen a very nice triple black SS convertible a couple times the summer

The Zl1 has 550HP and also weighs about 350lbs more than the GT500, not to mention the new 2013 GT500 will have 650HP stock. and believe it or not the GT500 runs faster lap times than the Camaro with a live axle. Also a live rear axle is better for drag racing. IRS is prone to break. I had to swith in a Ford 9" rear axle into my 03 Cobra because the IRS bite the dust once you are dealing with high Hp cars. Also the GT500 in my opinion looks muh better than the Camaro. Also the GT500 is easier and resonds to modifications better because it has better internals. The Camaro doesnt which mean if you crank up the boost the enigne is prone to failure, OHC engines like the Mustangs respons to boost much better than the pushrod engine the Camaro has.
It's weird I used to be a GM guy , having owned a 2000 SS Camaro before getting the Cobra. Ford has really stepped its game up in terms of performance.

Actually the price for both cars with be in the same range. As for betting on the Camaro..I wouldnt do that the GT500 has 100 more HP and weight over 300lbs less. The 2013 GT500's would walk the new Zl1 Camaro. as for the 750HP SLP version thats going to cost a pretty penny, also the GT500 also has the Super snake package with 800hp.
I am going to leave the new stang mostly stock, however a few minor mods will be made.
and for the prie you would pay for an SLP or Super Snake package, you could get to those HP levels much cheaper doing the modifications on your own. Only good thing about the SLP and Super snake packages is they come with a warranty.

The ZL1 has 580 HP..... just saying. I'd much rather stick with a pushrod motor. Much less expensive to modify.

I've just never been fond of Mustangs or Fords in general. I've had nothing but problems with every one I have owned. GM just seems to build better hardware. That's why I drive a Corvette.

Correct on the 580HP, I was mistaken on that.
As for sticking with a pushrod engine I'd say yes they are much easier and cheaper to modify if youre staying N/A.
However when it comes to boost the OHC engines respond much better to boost.
As for the Zl1 its a blown pushrod engine without forged internals, chances are if you put more boost through the engine it's it more likley to fail(most of the time throwing a rod or other engine failures) The OHC engines respond better to boost. Look at the 03,04 Cobras and GT500's. There are 900RWHP+ GT500's and 03/04 Cobras running around with a bigger blower and more boost and most of the time you never even have to open the engine up(however the most replaces in interals on GT500's and 03/04 Cobras are the cams, not because of failure, just because when you are runnin high HP OHC engines you can get signifigant improvements replacing the stock cams. However boosted pushrod engines can make great power also, but without forged internals once you get to the 500-600HP mark you have a high chance of engine failure.
Since the Zl1 has not hit the streets yet i'll reserve judgement on how well they respond to mods especially adding more boost. GM is just getting into factory blown cars whereas Ford has been devolping factory boosted engines since 01-03 when the first terminator Cobras were released.
Not to pretend I know it all , but I started getting into drag racing with my father when I was about 10 years old, so I know a little about engines and modifications.
Funny part is I started out a GM guy having owned a 2000 Camaro SS. Before 03/04 Cobras the 4.6's were dogs compared to the 5.7 LS1 engines fro 98-02. However the performance stat have shifted to the mustang. The new 5.0's will pull away from the current camaros. Also they are doinng it with far less cubes. however I like the trend Gm and Ford are both trying to best each other which results into the modern muscle car wars. So it's a good thing because competition makes for better cars.

I like the more compact size of pushrod engines. Modular engines are large and expensive and a whole lot more complicated.
When it comes down to it, it's really a Ford vs. GM thing. For me, I'll always root for the Camaro or the Corvette.

If I was going to build a N/A car I would most likely start with an LSX engine.
However when it comes to boost i'll take the modular motor all day.
Even in N/A form the current mustang GT runs faster times than their camaro counterparts.
I agree modular motors are large and sommewhat more complicated than pushrods, but i'll take the trade off of being large and more complicated for the numbers boosted modulars make.
I grew up with my dad tinkering with old fox body 5.0's so I know pushrod engines can make great power too. I just prefer the new lineup of engines that ford is producing right now. What can I say I love me some boost!
Both engines have their pros and cons, but for me I chose the mustang.
Others like yourself like their pushrod motors and thats fine, I just happen to prefer the mustang for now.
Agree to disagreed?

train or bike

Cars, gas and drivers licenses are monstrously expensive here and our roads are very crowded. So I am very consiously not a car-owner.

95 Honda Accord 2.7L V6 with 170,000 miles on it (Still runs great!)

99 Ford Mustang GT 5-speed with 180,000 miles on it. (Lots of creaks, squeaks, rattles...but engine is good...replaced about 30k ago)

05 F-150 Lariat SuperCrew 4x4 with 60,000 miles.
