Default I'm in

I was looking hard at both the b&m tablet and kindle fire. I was leaning towards the tablet for its speed and it being more sideload friendly but was content to wait a while. The $25 MasterCard cyber Monday deal pushed me over the edge. Ordered today, hopefully get it early next week. Can't wait to toot this puppy and see what it's capable of.

My Nook came today...FINALLY!

So far I've rooted it-

Full root for Nook Tablet. [11/20/11] [Yes this is a permanent root!] - xda-developers

Installed Homecatcher-

[DEV] - HomeCatcher Redirect n Button to any Launcher - xda-developers

Installed the BN Home shortcut-

xda-developers - View Single Post - [DEV] - HomeCatcher Redirect n Button to any Launcher

Since the root method also installed the gapps including the market, there's not much need to sideload apps though there are several apps missing from the store.

I've also installed from the market-

ADW launcher (which replaced Go Launcher)
Anycut (for making the missing settings shortcuts)
FBreader+FBsync -a decent ereader made awesome with the added ability to sync place and books between mutiple devices.
Button Savior - A NECESSITY!!!!
ES File Explorer- my choice of file managers
Dolphin HD Browser
Opera Browser- Because stock based browsers have issues d/l from some sources.
And a bunch more ancillary stuff.

So far, I'm very impressed with the speed, stability, construction, and battery life of the device. There have been no FC's or freeze ups. The screen quality blows my Viewsonic gTablet out of the water. That ones heading for Ebay soon!

One slight bug I've come across is the white text on white background bug. Some menu's (FBreaders in particular) appear to be empty white. dragging a finger over them reveals the entries and you can use the menu's. More aesthetic than function.

My neighbor got a Fire a day ago (which he ordered 4 days after I ordered my Nook...errggghhh) and it kind of pales in comparison. In our very brief side by side, the Fire was noticeably slower and felt a little cheaper. The lack of external volume controls along with Amazon putting the power button, charge and headset ports so close together really irks him. Beyond the cloud services (which are a big thing), the only advatage the Fire has is Gorilla glass and stereo speakers. The speakers are a tiny bit louder than the Nook, but I think the "stereo" part is for the spec sheet only. The speakers are 2"apart and on the same side when viewing video in landscape...lots of seperation there! The result is that he's strongly considering returning the Fire and buying a Nook.

So far, so good. But it's only been ~ 8hrs

I must say I am really considering this tablet now.

Thanks for the update.

My girlfriends nook color is a very high quality device I must say. Beautiful screen, and it really feels nice to play with.

I just picked one up last night. Its awesome!!! Pictures are amazing looking, it plays all my MP4 files that I have for my apple devices, I sideloaded some apps and the overall speed is pretty quick.

I did the link to open up the unknown sources and just tbrew on some apps. I don't see a need for the android market as of now but I have the itch to root it.

To root or not to root thats the question?

Pasta: I'm trying to decide between getting the nook tab or galaxy tab 7+...any reason why I should get one over the other? I don't mind rooting, side loading, roms etc. but I'm just trying to figure out if the samsung is really worth it. Actually been trying to decide for over 2 weeks now lol

Edit: this will be my first tablet btw

The NT probably won't get a custom rom until ICS builds come out in Jan/Feb. This means you only have root and a custom launcher (and have to put up with button savior) until then. The NT is still on Froyo.

It appears your Galaxy Tab also comes with Froyo, but MIUI, and CM7 are available now.

Many of us are enjoying our HP Touchpad with CM7.1 and ICS coming in a few months, but maybe 10" is too big for you.

Nevermind. I was at Target today and got to play with the Nook and liked the build quality enough to go ahead and buy one from B&N.com. I also picked a kindle fire for the GF for Christmas.

The samsung just felt flimsy to me. It's also one of the reasons why I didn't return my rezound for the nexus.

Sorry I'm late catching up on this thread. I know his is too late, but...
The main difference between buying a NT and a more mainstream tablet like the 7+ is how much are a couple of camera's, gps and bluetooth worth to you? Personally, I have no intention of using my tablet as a camera, so rear facing camera is worth $0. I have a tablet (and a couple of phones) with front facing cameras for video chat and the almost vomit inducing video they produce is worth less than $0. If I want to make an (exceptionally rare) Skype call, I use a pc with a fixed camera. If anyone tries to video call me with hand held mobile device, I reject or ignore the awful twitchy up the nose video. I find bt a must have on my phone, but never used it on the gtab beyond pairing the headset, $5 value on a tab? GPS! I have no way of mounting the tablet in my car and am fine using a 4"-5" phone or pna screen for nav. I can safely say there's little chance I'll use my tablet for any form of navigation, $10 for the better google search accuracy. The 7+ has a ir blaster, but it's never going to work as well as a dedicated remote and I don't/won't leave the tablet in one place so I could never use it as a remote replacement. $5 value to me. So, all those extra features are worth ~$20 to me and aren't close to being deal breakers, far below the $100-$150 "full feature" 7" tablet cost difference over the NT.

My decision was pretty simple after last night. I have a 2 year old and a newborn coming the day after Christmas so I just needed to make sure they are gonna hold up to them lol. I had no intention of using them as cameras or navigation. Only times I ever use skype is at home on my laptop and if it's an emergency I have it on my phone.

I think I knew the whole time I would be happy with a fancy ereader but I was trying to justify buying something more expensive but didn't really need it

Hey guys I have a question about sideloading apps. I am(thankfully) still on 1.4.0. What does sideloading mean(never really heard the term before) and would I need root to be able to do this?

Sideloading means to install an app from a source other than the approved market, in this case B&N's market. You don't need to be rooted, but it will make the experience better. This is a pretty good explanation of the process, though I highly recommend doing this instead! Enjoy!

You can downgrade your Nook Tablet easily enough back to 1.4.0 using the guide here

[Stock Firmware]Restore Barnes & Nobel Nook 1.4.0 from SDCard - xda-developers

You may have to try different sd cards but I had luck using the 2gb card that came with my samsung galaxy prevail since i upgraded the card in the prevail.
