Cool You don't have to root the NC to run pure android 2.2

I didn't leave this in the All Things Root because well, I dunno, this is in reference to unrooted NookColors.

What you can do is burn Nookie to an sd card, found on this thread: [ADV][DEV][ROM] Nookie Froyo 0.5.9 (01/11) - xda-developers

You can then pop it into any NookColor, rooted or unrooted, and it will boot up pure android 2.2 (with some customization, the dev included Zeam, etc). Power down, pop it out and reboot right back into the stock NookColor home. Don't believe it? Burn it to the sd card, take it to B&N and do it to their demo units and watch their heads explode. No worries, as it does not touch the internal memory at all, its safe.

The reason this works is that NookColor is hardwired to boot off SD if there is a card there that knows how to take it over.

So what does this mean? You are running the operating system right off the sd card and it doesnt touch the internal memory at all, which is why having a high class speed sd card is important. It can be sluggish off a class 2. I did it to a class 6 and pulled a 1560 quadrant, it blazes.

So if you have a spouse that just likes their NookColor how it was out of the box or something, they can use it how they want. When you want to use it, power down, pop in the sd card, and boot up froyo. Obviously, this is portable since its all on the SD card you can add all your apps, customize how you like, and put it into any nook and it will look just like you left it. Very cool!

This can also save your ass in a big way if you temporarily disable your nook (this is why it can't be bricked). Lets say you royally eff up your eMMC or boot partition on the internal memory. Pop in this SD card, fix everything (which can be a hassle but can be done), power off and you can reboot a working NookColor.

Thought ya'll would like to know

Very cool. What about the standard Nook launcher, reader, library, etc. are those still available?

question: get a message saying "SD card damaged"... since you're using the SD card to run froyo, where do you store downloads etc?

(i burned nookie on the sd card using an imager)

+1 on this question, cabbie. Where does the apps u download go? is the sd card usuable for other than booting up froyo? I don't want to waste a 16 gb sd card so I can use froyo.
This is the main reason why I like autonooter because the stock nook ui and the android features are available without having to reboot.

Thanks cabbie.

What download are you using? 0.5.9? If so there are reports regarding vold and/or permissions. Sounds like something you might have. I havn't found any info on the downloads question.

Try this one: Customized Nookie Froyo 0.5.9 Image for sdcard - xda-developers

This one has a script built in that will fix the sd card thing and make all the extra space available for storage.

Apps you download will be on the sd card itself, this does not touch internal memory. It'll be in /data/apps which is typically the internal memory of the device, but not in this case.

Quote:
Goto to App Drawer>DevTools>Terminal Emulator and type the following commands, if prompted press Allow to Superuser Request. You might have to leave Terminal Emulator and go back in if your keyboard disappears.

$su
#/data/data/makepart/makepart.sh
Hit <enter> to reboot

After it reboots (and you wait a minute or two), go back into Terminal Emulator and type the following commands.

$su
#/data/data/makepart/formatpart.sh
Hit <enter> to reboot

At this point, your last partition should take up any available space on your card. I intentionally left off the 4th partition in the image so it could be created with this script.

Hello cabbie and others,
I am new to all this. I want to do what you talked about to my NC. You say that the class 6 card is fast. Looking on the internet I see class 6 and class 10. Is the class 10 to fast. I see the price is almost the same. What do you think?
Thank you.

If they are almost the same price, get the class 10 especially if you are going to use the SD card to boot froyo. It makes a difference. I tried both and there was a 300-350 point difference in quadrant scores between the two classes.

Hi all,

thanks for the cool thread. So, I'm thinking about trying this but, it occurs to me that all my apps are backed up (via titanium backup) to (if I understand correctly) my SD-card. Any fairly straightforward way to get all my many current apps onto my SD-card based Froyo install?

thanks

So I did nookie froyo 0.6.7 image and have it running flawlessly (I Think) of the SD card, but it seems like the market, soft keys etc aren't part of the package. Did I screw something up, or do I need to manually force that in somehow?

Read the instructions:
The physical N key has been configured as: One tap = Softkeys, Two taps = Zeam, and Long tap = Recent Tasks.

I've never, ever used Android before. Ever. Not even on a demo phone. Is there a tutorial some place that I'm missing?

You can disregard that post. I have clearly done something wrong on my Nookie Froyo trail run. Removed the SD card and can't figure out what I did wrong.

1) Installed card
2) Turned NC on
3) Got a funny menu with two choices, one I don't recall, the other was soft keys.
4) I think I selected soft keys even though I was trying to hit the first option
5) Set up my wireless connection. My router doesn't broadcast on purpose.
6) Fixed all the settings to what I wanted/didn't want.
7) Couldn't find the app store
8) Reboot the NC to see if that resolved the lack of app store issue
9) Soft keys no longer working, says something about not rooted.
10) Turn NC off and removed card

I'm pretty sure this is a user error and not Nookie Froyo. I didn't find much in the way of help since this is an Alpha release. Anyone know what I did wrong?

I saw something in the NC Root video posted here about "Never Booting your Root NC with an SD card in" as it will somehow unroot the phone. Anyway, you might want to check that out.

Oh yeah, and check this out. It helped me to understand exactly how the "Softkeys" function works. For me, I have to press the "n" button twice for it to pop-up. Anyway, I hope that help.

Question for those using this Non-Root method: How do I get the Market? That may seem very simple, but for the life of me, I can't figure it out. I wanted to use this SDcard-Nonroot method for a while until I wanted to fully commit to the NC and do a true Root. Am I missing something? Or, is the Market not accessible using this method?

It's not about booting with "an" SD card...it's about not booting with the SD card still having the disk image loaded on it that you used to root the device. Once you complete the rooting process, you need to go into settings on the NC and reformat the SD card.

A normally formatted SD card will not harm you file system on boot (or at any time).

Make sense?

Absolutely. I figured someone with some experience would be able to help be more specific.

You have any insight into my dilemma? You know why I can't get the Market? Is this Non-Root method just a sort-of Android-Preview? I don't seem to have flash either (which I would get from the market if I could )

Can you post the link you followed to get this "preview"?

I've never used the 2.2 version. I'm sticking with 2.1 (because stability is key for my kids NC). I did preview the Honeycomb version and got market working with that...but had to search around for the "how-to's".

I'm sorry if my post was confusing. I was saying that in reference to the OP. This is a method to run Android 2.2 on the NC without rooting. Since I don't have access to the Market or other GApps, I was wondering if this was more a method of trying out 2.2 without actually rooting, a sort of "Preview".

NP

I just looked at the thread at XDA and didn't see any immediate questions about the market so I'm guessing that it would be loaded when you installed the Nookie Froyo image.

Honestly...I'd just root the device and be done with it. If you own one of these devices...you'll want to root it! Start here: The go-to wiki page for rooting the NookColor

Froyo is Android 2.2. I don't think that it is 100% functional yet so I'd avoid it (I am avoiding it ). If you still want to preview 2.2 or even 3.0 (Honeycomb) then do it at that time. But as of right now...my advice would be to root your device on the latest software (V1.1.0 which is a Android 2.1 implementation). You will get Android Market but Flash will not be available as 2.2 is required for flash.

This device is still pretty new but the development on it has been incredible thus far. I'm waiting for a stable Android 3.0 implementation and then will really start looking into updating the ones I have.

Froyo is super stable and fully capable of being a daily driver.

The latest honeycomb by deeper-blue (version 4) is also very stable and works great.

My daily driver is still rooted 1.1 but i often boot honeycomb off an sd card just to play.

So I am running 2.2 on my sd card. I guess no market for me. I'm confuzzled to say the least. In any case, it was fun.

I burned my sd card with "nookie-froyo-0.6.7-SDCARD.custom.2.img" onto a class 4 4gb card. I tried youtube, vast improvement over the nook, I tried downloading Pandora, no luck. I logged into Youtube, as I have seen a few folks saying that may be the solution, however, no luck. I'm going to give my futzing around a few days off so that I have the weekend to play, but I'm sure someone has a fix, I just don't know where to find it at this point.

Other than that, it performed well, if not better than the nook 1.1.0 os, so at least I have that for browsing and such.

Considering a mod is helping this person root...I'm pretty sure they don't have s huge issue with that.

I understand where you're coming from. The thread did get lead astray, but that's what happens when you visit an open community with people that like to help others out.

If the mods do want to clean it up, I hope they don't delete any posts. I think there are a lot of valuable tools in this thread. I suppose they could create another "Trouble Rooting: SDcard booting without root" thread and just move the posts over there. But the important information for this thread is really contained within the first post or two. The only real value in moving the posts would be to help others learn from Harley's frustrations.

Thread has been split. Sorry for hijacking the thread guys but I'm a bit of a utilitarian...frustrated people trying to root their devices turned this thread into a support thread. Rather than move the discussion "during" the process...I decided to let it run it's course.

jxker is right though...the thread needed to be split. bgrutter was right also in saying that there might be some posts that could be very helpful so nothing was deleted To see that go here:

The Official "I can't get my NC to root" thread

So...feel free to discuss the OP's topic now LOL

Not to piss and moan, but the comments I posted were about 2.2 on a micro sd card. And that I have Market working. No big deal.

Market working. Happy happy joy joy!
I was able to open the market, and search for any app. Problem was they would not d/l. I did what I read in the quoted text. Now the android market gets this error when I try to open it "attention: an error has occurred. Please try again later".

not sure what to do. I also have looked at NookColor: Nookie Froyo Tips. I d/l the 3rd party apps .zip file that is suppose to have youtube, pandoria and other programs. I tired using adb shell, and unable to get it to work. I have used have used it in the past with my LG phone, but now no luck. When I pop the sd card into my laptop I am unable to see the /system fold. my guess it is the way the partitions are set, but who knows. any help would be appreciated.

I am running nookie 0.6.8 on my sd card

thanks

It's 1.2.0 day, and low and behold, I found that this sd card method does root the nook, and I spend all morning trying to straighten it out. Long story short, if you use the sd card, don't try to upgrade to 1.2.0, unless you first go through the process of "UNROOTING" your nook color. Good luck gang.

???

Huh?

Using the SD card with full Froyo installed doesn't root the standard files stored on the EMMC.

Plug card into stock NC, boot 2.2, take out card and reboot and it's back to 100% stock. No modification of internal files.

I'd be interested to hear more of what your exact problem was, but I can pretty much guarantee it wasn't related to this.

I started the manual update. When I went back to it, it was in Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 reboot menu. The boot SD was not in the tablet.I don't know how else that would have happened if it had not been rooted.

Sounds like you installed CWM from ROM Manager.

Autonooter doesn't even use CWM so that wasn't the cause.

Guys I'm new to the forum so go easy. I'm a long time Droid X user that has rooted, rom'd and themed. I got my Nook Color yesterday and updated manually to 1.2.0 Since rooting is not available yet I decided to install Froyo using the bootable sd card. That said things are going well as I learn about the Nook. I am having trouble successfully downloading apps from the market. The download starts but them fails. Any idea what's going on.

Welcome to the NC forums Bankswood. If you know your way around your DX, then this stuff won't phase you in the least. Not only does it not have a locked bootloader, but the bootable uSD card makes trying out new things a breeze.

Try wiping cache and data for the market.

I've also heard that 2.2 had issues with WiFi with some protocols, and that could be the cause if the download starts and doesn't finish. Does the progress bar indicate any progress at all?

Some more info originally posted by Stinky that worked to fix the exact issue you are reporting.

Not sure why its doing that, but seems a few people have reported the same thing in the eMMC Customized Nookie Froyo ROM.

After clearing Market cache, and force closing Market, go to Google Services Framework and clear data, then force stop. Reboot into recovery, wipe cache, then Dalvik cache which is under Advanced. then reboot.

Thats the process for Froyo to allow protected apps to show in the Market, but may help your situation. You could always try to find a Market .apk file on Google and replace the current one, see if that helps as well.
Now since your DX is ROM'd, you seriously need to consider putting on Gingerbread. CM7 is stable, and Phiremod 6.1 is the preferred ROM and works beautifully. You do lose B&N instore reading and Read-to-me books, but can still access all your B&N books through the Nook App. But what you are left with is pure Gingerbread goodness. You can also dual boot OS, if you want to keep stock.

NJ thanks for the response. Rick aka Colchiro has been coaching me while I waited fror thr Nook to arrive. Of course he talked me into buying it so he has to help. My problem seems tobe timing. I was al ready to apply Autonooter then flash either CM7 or Phiremod. But when the Nook arrived I decided to go ahead and apply the update so now I'm waiting for updated rooting files. As for the B&N situation I couldn't care less. I use Kindle App on my Droid X for reading. I want the Nook to be a nice tablet.

That's the beauty though, no rooting required to install a ROM.

Just load CWM onto SD card, along with the ROM of your choice. Boot right from the SD card into CWM and install ROM.

Done.

Instructions over at XDA
