Default safestrap doesnt work

I just updated to .902 via RSD. rooted via..whatever that root was called. and I downloaded safestrap. I opened safestrap, installed the recovery, turned my phone off, turned it back on, hit "menu" when it told me to hit menu, the screen got a bit brighter, then it went blank for a few seconds, then it booted up normally. never took me into recovery.

ok...so in the spirit of experimenting, I turned off the phone, held volume up/down and power, and then selected the option that said "BP tools". This then took me straight into safestrap recovery...I'm trying a backup right now.

I can't even remember how i installed safestrap anymore, but it works great. Whenever you boot up your phone the menu will come up to go into safestrap or to continue. Backup your stock root on the nonsafe then switch over and flash all the roms on the safe part. If it's not working try reinstalling it again.

i re installed it. still won't work. I can get into safestrap recovery by going through fast boot, but hitting menu while booting up doesn't do it.

What version did you install? Do you still have bootstrap installed? You can get the latest version from here.

Did you allow 3rd party apps in your settings and allowed root access?

Yes. I'm an idiot. I realized today I was hitting home, not menu. Incredibly embarrassing. Safe strap works great!

what's the difference between safe mode and non safe mode? I've heard you should create a backup in both?

Haha I was actually gonna ask if you were making sure you were pressing the menu button, glad you got it figured out. You're supposed to backup your stock root in the non safe mode, then in safe mode is where you flash all your roms and back them up if you want. At least that's what i've been doing without any problems.
