Yeah, when Wifi is on, you will lose cell service. Which to me...if I'm playing games that need WiFi...I don't want anyone to text me anyway XD So I don't consider it an issue >>;;

I always hate when i go to play a game or netflix and then i relax, start watching south park or something, and then get a pop-up and the show stops because i just got a text. My texts never end either :O
Actually, I tried this out the other day on the ROM which I've been putting together which uses Shin's OC kernel, and my WiFi and 3G were both working simultaneously. I did notice the 3G icon in the status bar was missing, however I still received a text and a phone call during the time I was using WiFi.

Oh. I guess I never thought of that. In that case, not having 3G when you're on WiFi isn't really an issue then, correct? At least I fail to see the downside of it lol

Downside is ril, all cell reception is lost, so no phone calls, no text. Nor 3g. I don't know why this is happening. I'm assuming something is telling the ril to shut down. But I haven't seen the source. So its just a theory. Either that, or the frequency range, voltage range, or something of that nature is causing it to shutdown. May also be that the operating range of the oc is outside of the parameters set in the original CAF source, and we are getting some kind of out of range error. Now do you see why its such a difficult thing to fix?

Not really, since I was able to receive a text and call even while my 3G was off. From what I gather from the other posts, turning WiFi on shuts off 3G on Shin's kernel. If 3G (EVDO) shuts off, this RIL tells the 1x (CDMA, which carries the calls and texts) to shut down as well? If that's the case, then how did I still get a call and text while surfing on WiFi?
What is this RIL you speak of?
I'm not meaning to incite an argument, I guess I just can't seem to grasp all the details of the problem. Maybe it's just my Noob-itis showing lol
My phone Wifi and bluetooth didn't work as well as most calls were not coming through. I had multiple people say they called me and I had no missed calls.

Ril is radio layer interface, just think of it as a driver for all things signal. Your circumstances maybe unique. From what I've observed, amoung others, is signal loss, no calls or text. And as far as 3g, it is supposed to turn off when you switch to Wi-Fi, that is intentionally built in to all os. Why? That way on post pay plans you are not using mobile data while on wifi. Now I know that doesn't matter for us, but that is how it is supposed to work, if you are attached to wifi that has no internet connection or security key is not correct, then 3g wouldn't go away. Its looking for an internet connection.

Thank you! That's a little easier for me to understand

the main reason i don't use his OC kernal is becuz I tether as my primary internet source and his kernal stops tethering from working cuz of the wifi/3g problems. Itz too bad too and hope it gets fixed cuz u ca almost double the proc. speed of this phone which is awesome. Almost 2ghz for 179.00 is rediculous, lol

I hear you, I do the same thing as you. Maybe this is an isolated incident, but my tethered phone is my PC's primary (and only!) internet source and I've been using Shinru's OC kernel for about a week now and it doesn't stop Barnacle Tether from functioning. In fact, I am tethered in this manner as I type this reply and am having no problems at all. Oddly enough, I did notice that the 3G Turbocharger script by Zeppelinrox will inhibit it from operating, so if you have this installed, run it again and select option 6 (UnTurboCharge) to allow Barnacle to operate once again.
Also if you need Internet but you really want the oc use a usb tether it has faster Internet speeds and doesn't even need root so you won't have any problems as it doesn't use wifi. I like wifi tether for the ease of use but usb if I need good Internet

I've been using shins oc since beta 2 came out. I have no tethering problems. I use wireless tether all the time
