Default Boost Mobile Samsung 2 - New member Question

I am a new member here and just purchased a Boost Samsung 2 phone. I have two questions, I have read enough already about Boost customer service being very poor but wanted to see if I can get an answer here first.

1) I have not activated the phone yet but have been using it with WIFI the last several days. It keeps reminding me to activate it. Will this cause any issues when I finally do activate it? I am holding off until my company makes it mandatory for me to switch (I currently have a company paid device with Verizon). I know service will go down and completely understand that fact so waiting until I have to port my number over. So will using it WIFI only until then mess anything up with the phone or boost?

2) Would I be able to activate it receive a boost number to verify how poor the signal is (or hopefully not) then port my company number over at a later date. I cannot find anything in regards to that on Boosts website.

remember porting number can take up to 24 hours but if you phone is new never activated u should be fine just make before your service with verizon is done if u need to port the number your verizon account need to be activates for the port to go thrue

I had a Boost number for a few months before porting my AT&T number over. I had no problems. If you have a Facebook I've had much better luck dealing with Boost on their Facebook page. They always answer my questions rather quickly compared to the idiots you get on the phone when you call them.

Hey, Welcome to the forums.

1) Using your phone as a WiFi only device will not affect your service or activation in any way.

2) Your phone should always show the number of bars and signal strength even when not activated on the network. It still pings the towers to find the time and such. Under settings > about phone you should be able to find your signal strength in dBm. Anything under 100 dBm should be decent as long as it's 3g and not 1xRTT. You can also use the app Sensorly to see your signal. Though there are a lot of factors that affect data performance and there isn't much that Boost can do about it so calling them probably won't help.

3) There is no "trial" activation. It's a prepaid phone and so at the very worst your out of 55$ plus tax and the activation fee. Which isn't too awful considering Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Net 10, and Straight Talk(CDMA phones only) use the same network. So if Boost doesn't work then the ones above won't either and you won't have to spend your time and money to find out.

If interested there is an app called GrooVe IP lite and if you have a google voice number and a good WiFi connection you can make calls and received calls using this ap via WiFi even though there is no activated cell service on the phone. The catch...the lite version will only make calls via WiFi while the pay version will make calls over the 3g connection once you activate the phone.

Not all Sammy phones have the radio/software issue plus it does have a lot to do with your distance to the tower. If you start having issues just turn off the phone and back on. It should work just fine for a while after a reboot. It really is a nice device, takes great pictures and great video (1080p).
