With all the goodies that rooting brings surely there will be a few, me included, who will inevitably screw something up. When I "Bricked" my Captivate i quickly found a fix that left my heart rate down and my mood up. Many people I've read throughout these forums thought they were bricked and found no solution. All of these cases had similar symptoms:
a. Stuck on Galaxy S Boot Screen
b. Wait a few minutes and screen turns black
c. Button lights stay on
d. Will not power off
If you have these symptoms, good news this fix MAY "UN-brick" your Captivate.
Procedure:
1. If phone is in above state; pull battery.
2. Enter recovery mode by holding Vol up and Vol down and pressing the power button until phone turns on, then release power button, not vol buttons.
3. Now using the Vol up and down highlight "erase all user data"
4. Press power to select it
5. Wait for boot and *hopefully* you're good to go!

I believe that the phone is very difficult to brick permanently. You just need to be able to enter download mode, which apparently never gets touched on this phone. Once you figure out the key combo and powering sequence to get to download mode, Odin will be able to flash you back to life.

Did both of you try the odin3 one click recovery that is linked in the sticky.
As for download mode; have you tried
1. pull the battery,
2. put it back in;
3. then, with the phone still off, plug your usb into the computer,
4. turn on odin3,
5. hold the center of the volume buttons,
6. plug the usb to the phone while holding the volume botton?
And that still did not put you into download mode?

Hello, yes this exact thing happen to me but i've been unable to boot to recovery. Tried every combination of holding buttons and still nothing. Also tried to get to download mode to do a flash recovery with odin but couldn't get there as well.
Can anyone help me? Or should I try and take my phone back?

That also doesn't work... couldn't get into "download mode" just goes to the battery charging symbol.

All you have to do is shut down the phone. Hold down the volume up and down buttons together and plug in your USB cable and you will go straight to download mode. Oh and open odin before all this. Simple and works everytime.
I am stuck have restarted my phone after it crashed on me and reset factory settings but it still wont work, when I slide to open it just fires android error messages at me. Help please
Some people may not realize that the volume up/down has three possitions it can be pressed: volume up, volume down, and depressed in the center. I had this same problem when I was rooting. it took a few tries to get it pressed correctly.

probably something else wrong with my phone then because I did that but still couldn't get into "download mode"
It's cool though because I took it back and got another one
last week when i was trying to swap out my fonts, i bricked mine. I had tried clearing user cache/data but didn't work. fortunately, i was within my 30 days so I exchanged it.
some people are calling the galaxy s phones unbrickable. Or at least not permanently.
That's odd; I'm sure that if you smashed a Captivate with a brick for a few minutes it would do considerable damage. I don't see how the phone is unbrickable at all.

Hi, i doubt anyone would read up to this posting but this thread helped alot. I found out a little something.
Situation:
-Tried to upgrade firmware from 2.1 to 2.2 using samsung Kie (not sure how its spelt).
-installed, loaded up, bricked at samsung splash screen.
Tried:
-calling samsung tech support (doesn't work)
-looked here (does work)
Conclusion:
-add the two previous attempts together: After installing the firmware from 2.1 to 2.2, it would make it a good note that the user data after installing a new firmware is needed. The user data of a heavily used phone is massively different in terms of setting, sounds settings, etc. so by clearing the user data out it allows for the original manufacturer's user data to take place. it doesn't always change but if you have been messing around with the phone like I have, it'll need a good clean wipe to work out.
I thank you all for a wonderful place to find solutions to my wonderful phone which helped me turn friends over to android

no, not every time. as with the poster who posted above you, mine just goes to the battery charging animation as well.

Solutions that have worked for me:
- The Jig
- Taking the battery out, plug the USB in. Hold the vol+/- buttons and reinsert the battery. It may take a couple tries, but it has worked for me.
Not good, that most likely means your 3 button is disabled and that is how I bricked my last cappy. I did not try the USB jib though

Well, after some long research, I found that not all Captivates have the 3 button boot - even within the same build #'s. Why Samsung did that is beyond me... at any rate, you can add that to your firmware, but I dygress; back to the issue at hand.
So, figuring my Captivate was one without the ability to boot holding the vol +/- buttons, I researched further and the only solution is a usb jig. not wanting to hack up my cable, or wait a few days to order one online, I attempted this method from over at xda: [FIX] Unbrick captivate w/o cutting up USB! - xda-developers.
Could not get it to work, and not for like of trying for a day and a half.. I just didn't get it; from everything I'd read it should work. Well, I was apparently braindead from the stress of not having my phone. It finally occured to me I had grabbed the wrong resisters. doh! grabbed the right ones and had it in download mode in about 30 seconds. make sure you pick up the 100K ohm resistors, not the 100 ohm!
anyway, after booting in download mode, I connected the usb and used odin 1-click (some captivated cannot use the 1-click btw...) and my phone was back up and running with the original fw in less than 10 minutes.

I understand that totally... but it is not working. I have samsung galaxy s recently upgraded to 2.2froyo. I can't get it into download mode at all. Have tried, volume up/ down/ power no go. volume up/ power, no go. volume down/ power, no go. center button/ power, no go. All it does is loads, plays mini vid graphic, then the S, and then goes black and vibrates intermittently. So went another way, downloaded the Odin3 one click... it says
Quote:
Method 3KEY COMBO)
Remove the battery, sim card, sdcard if you have one
Insert the battery
Hold both Volume buttons (from i9000 just down, don't touch the power button)
Plug in the USB cable and continue holding both Volume buttons
Done that, and just got the battery icon on screen... then black and just the vibrating...
I have noticed though, in the Odin3, that something is added and in ID:COM it has "com:5" or something, I forget offhand. When I press starts, it says "ID:0:005 Odin v 3 engine (5) file analysis"... and then "OSM: All Threads Completed (success 0/ failed 1)
Anyone got some advice please and ty :\
I know the button trick does work... cos I remember AGES ago when I first got phone and I tried to root, I could get in there... but now *sighs* :\
Procedure:
1. If phone is in above state; pull battery.
2. Enter recovery mode by holding Vol up and Vol down and pressing the power button until phone turns on, then release power button, not vol buttons.

Worked for me was on a boot loop after upgrading to froyo and this solved it for me

After reading very heavily thru XDA over this week, I see now where I was wrong. But since just about every set of instructions for a ROM says "flash back to stock" or directly says to use the one click, it's an easy assumption to mistake.
I have a samsung galaxy 3. 2 months back i tried to load android 2.2 on my mobile..odin displayed that the operation was successful but when i switched off the mobile, after that the phone never got switched on.. i removed the battery and did all possible key combinations to go the download screen but even it was a failure..the phone is completely dead now..it neither boots not shows booting screen.Kindly provide suggestions how to rectify this proble,.

This isnt true. You dont lose the 3 button fix. Its either you have it or u dont. Ive been using one click odin since it came out and i still have my 3 button fix and i flash roms very frequently.
Hi,
I have flashed my phone with GB ROM. But now my phone is totally dead. I have tried with all the possible ways but still no success. Please help me guys. Help will be much appreciated.

Elaborate on what your phone is doing or not doing other than being dead if possible. Also what steps did you take when flashing GB? Could narrow down what went wrong exactly.
****if u use oden to install 3rd party unofficial os/rom, it will not be update able, nor will it be fully functional in various ways.(gingerbread 2.3.3 does not have dialed recent calls, and others if not the official provider copy) the best way to update your phone is in fact be inquisitive with your provider. They have express codes you dial into your phone for android os upgrades, "ice cream sandwich" is going to be officially launched by them very soon anyway. Hella cooler. And it's available now for galaxy s 4g, thru oden install. Anyway, back to brick. Do not! Do not! Do not! Turn off phone, unplug anything, open new programs on your pc/laptop, or touch anything period, when it is running, and while there is a progress bar on the phone. This will in fact brick it. Deader than dead. Won't turn on all or be re-bootable by you. The good news is if you do brick it, samsung ( as long as it is not stolen, reported missing or other nutty stuff ) will email you a label to print and tape, or print on a sticky label to cover the shipping and everything. Then you send it in a box, and get it back in less than ten days, re-booted with the latest and greatest software available for it officially. Now that is bad arse. They back their stuff, even though i did the fatal error. Samsung is the best. That galaxy s 4g is a pretty capable device also. It whoops rump!
dude, there is no way, besides physically damaging the Captivate to permanently brick it. I know, I've "bricked" mine probably 5 or 6 times flashing roms using Odin. 1) there is a version of Odin (I wish I could think of the number right now) that half the time even when you're "bricked", still recognizes it when you close out of Odin, leaving Cappy still on usb, restart Odin, then unplug and plug the Cappy back in. It'll pick it right up. If not, I came across a thread that has worked EVERY time, just a little tricky on getting the timing down. 2) Have Odin running, with sim, sd, and battery out, plug in usb to phone, hold down the bottom volume and power button, put in battery and EXACTLY 3 SECONDS from when your battery makes contact, release the power button, and Viola! back into download mode. Like I said, timing is everything, it usually takes me about 30 minutes of trying it every time, but it has worked every time.

Reading the stories on bricked phones are one of the best things about this site...
Thats cold man... funny... but cold man. I actually bricked my first one today... got myself all distracted while I was playing with ROM ToolBox... I like giving Rummy s*** about how bad he is at handling compatibility issues... and well; turns out my phone had one.
TBull, i tried this and wiped the entire data but did not reach the boot stage. Any more tips to make my phone work please...
