I'm trying my best to root my captivate, but I can't seem to do it. I'm hesitant to push my luck and accidentally do it wrong. I've tried following all the steps on the videos, but I can't get it to work, something always goes wrong. Can anyone help me do this and then tell me how to install the Froyo 2.2 update?

Someone, please help.

1) Rooting instructions are mentioned in the Captivate FAQ:
Root - CapFAQ

2) There is no Android 2.2 update for the Captivate yet. The only ROMs you'll find are hacked-up unofficial ROMs, based either on a buggy early leaked internal "beta" build that is known to have problems, or based on 2.2 from other hardware that people have then modified to try and work as best they can with the Captivate hardware (but with issues). None are perfect. All have quirks/issues bugs, with new ones discovered daily. All involve serious hacking up of your phone and risk.
