YOu need to go into the All Things Root section here on Android Forums and start reading. Then go over to the XDA Captivate Development forum and read some more. Once you understand the process then yes, you can upgrade to 2.2 via a custom ROM - or you can wait patiently (you may have grandchildren first, though) for AT&T to finally issue an official OTA update to Froyo, or 2.2. Gingerbread, or 2.3, is not ready for us mere mortals, the developers are still playing with it.

Is rooting worth the risk? I mean I am fine with my device right now... I am scared of bricking/ruining it.

You are the only one who can decide if it is worth the risk. There are a lot of members on this site (myself included) who have flashed roms running 2.2. I think most, if not all, of us would say it was worth the risk.
There are also a number of people on this site who do not believe it is worth the risk and are vocal in their opinions.
The best thing you can do is educate yourself on what 2.2 roms bring to the table and then make an educated decision.

You know, it's a personal preference. You can just use the phone, but if you've got a little techno-geek side (like I do, and like most on this forum, I'll bet!) you'll end up rooting it, at least. You won't ruin it via rooting, you'll be able to use apps that can't be used on an unrooted phone (mainly maintenance type stuff, but there's some interesting stuff that takes root). I wanted sideloading, so I figured that one out, too. There are some apps over on XDA that you can use to both root and sideload, but first you need to make yourself familiar with the ADB tools.
You don't have to flash a ROM, I'm going to when I have some spare time to fiddle, I've been making preparations to do it this week. There's lots of help on these forums, just ask and I am sure you'll get a great answer!
thanks... I am gonna try to root my phone. So far when I plug my phone into the computer, I never see that my phone is plugged into the computer or anything(no software thingy for the phone on the computer) so I can't even try to unroot the phone. Whats wrong and how do I fix it?
You do know that rooting and uploading a custom ROM are not the same things, right? I would suggest doing a lot more reading before attempting either. I've had my phone since July and just rooted it this week. I followed the directions here:
Captivate Root following the easy instructions in post #121, using the update.zip file in the first post. No computer needed.

Ok, I tried that, the post said to originally put the file in your sd card (I tried which failed because it said system aborted or whatever).
It turns out you need to save the file to your internal memory, but how the heck do I do that?

It will save to the correct place automatically if you download and use Opera (from the Market) to download it (part of the beauty of this method). Then you rename it from there to just update (no zip, it already knows that). You can find the file in My Files (look in applications). Long press on update.zip to get the "rename" option, then just type in "update" (no quotes), then continue with the instructions from there.

Is rooting worth the risk? I mean I am fine with my device right now... I am scared of bricking/ruining it.
There is another risk not often mentioned, I hope I did not overlook someone else mentioning it. The risk is that you are then running with elevated permissions... And apps do too. It is therefore more likely a malicious app could conceivably take over your device more easily, if any such Android malwsre even exists.
Running with lesser permissions has always offered improved security. That us why Windows Vista hacked in UAC since they made the mistake years ago of allowing users to run with full administrative rights by default.
Ok this is absolutely driving me crazy now, ALL NIGHT I have been trying to root my phone! I can't get samsung driver to work on my computer so I don't know how to root on my computer if that won't work. Also trying to do it from my phone, I can't find "internal memory" to save the application or whatever to root the phone. Because all it does it let me save it on my SD card which I am not supposed to do because that will not work.

Oh, running with lesser permissions also protects the user from himself or herself.. Not just malicious apps. I really recommend you not if you are having any trouble. Ask yourself the real, tangible benefit YOU will have once rooted... Besides bragging rights

If you can't find 'Internal Memory' but DO see the External Memory then something is whack on your PC. Try another PC.
Say you through caution to the wind. I don't think you'll brick your device, but who knows what happens to your OS when the user and any app you install has rights to do so anything. Also, maybe reverting back to the original 2.1 firmware (JF6) will help. It seemed to make a difference for me.
CAUTION: Reversion of firmware will cause loss of data and apps.
Once you've reverted, the root process is simple though. If you can't figure it out, or get it working, then you should not root your device IMHO. The above may be what you are missing though. I tried after doing an OTA update and had failure, so... back to older firmware and then it works
CAUTION: Rooting gives apps and the user elevated rights to do anything.. Pay extra close attention to the rights requested when you install an app from now on (assuming you get it rooted).

I edited my posts a bit, as I had typed them on the Tab. I threw in some more warnings too. I don't want you going and doing anything like losing apps and data because I said to do this or that. Look, I really recommend you not do this. It sounds 'cool', but be sure you have that reason.. that necessity.
I want to root my phone so then I can get the firmware 2.2 to get a better battery life and faster phone.. and whatever else. But seriously this is driving me nuts I just want to isntall it already and I can't even get my computer to recognize the phone... and Iv'e been trying all frikin night long going insane.

I actually found 2.2 to run slower than 2.1, but that may have just been me. Many of the modded firmwares come with 'cool' features that take up extra time. The boot process was definitely slower, by quite a bit. It had an even more elaborate animation. I did not see battery life improvements, but there may be some in some cases. You will be disappointed if those are your reasons, IMHO. Eventually the 2.2 update will come, and you'll know it is 'right'.. you won't have to take risks, and won't have data or app loss.
I added above, if you don't see 'Internal Memory' but do see external memory listed when you plug in the phone, then you've got an OS issue of some sort (most likely) and you should try a different PC.

I guess it's defected or something then. I just really wanted to root my phone... I guess I'll give up now
No, it isn't that. Windows is just not mapping the 'Internal Memory' where it is supposed to be. Make sure you selected 'Mass storage mode'. It is a fixable problem. However, I think you'll be disappointed with the promises 2.2 offers. Keep waiting, I know it sucks to wait.. but I was disappointed with these custom 2.2 firmwares so will wait for an official one. I believe a semi-official one was posted here recently, and I have not tried it. It may be better.
My Tab runs 2.2 and it is a good OS, it isn't a giant leap forward though. I mean, 2.1-update1 to 2.2... You know, you aren't getting that many changes. The better cut&paste and cursor positioning is likely my only favorite new feature. In 2.3 there will be better support for these Tabs, but it seems the Tab already has some of the 2.3 features.
Let the manufacturers give you the proper firmware and you'll be much better off in the end. You could end up in a quagmire.
I give up, all my computer lets me see is my media card and nothing else. Or it will end up saying my phones a blackberry if I go on mass media mode ( Have a memory card in the phone I used to have in my old blackberry.)
I miss the days that you could root without connecting your phone to a PC. So much simpler.

Just got Cognition 2 on my Cappy sitting in the parking lot at work without a computer. Not to sure if I did anything bad, but it seems to be working fine.BTW I wouldn't recommend doing that above if you don't have a charger. My battery was about dead when I was done and I have no clue what would of happened if it died in the middle :-) I'm still new to Android but I've never had a phone I haven't bricked lol.
-If the phone dies during a ROM/firmware update it will leave the phone in a semi-broken state. You can still try the 3 button combo to get Download mode so you can Odin one click back to 2.1 Eclair and try again. Or worse, you'll need a hardware jig (home made improvised device) to get the phone into Download mode to Odin back to 2.1 Eclair stock.

The first time I ever used z4root it took 2 tries. The first pass it hung before reboot but I simply did a battery pull and tried again and it worked. Might have been since I had rooted first with OCLF, then unrooted to try out z4root.

Since then it's worked first pass every time.
That is the exact sequence I had. First pass hung etc.,I may try again.

I faced no problems and I think its first version...I never keep it on my phone just on computer....I install it when I want new rom..
If u want i can send u the apk..and u can try urself....
one click root worked for me last time i used...but before that i was having some error using it...so i took z4root method
I'd make sure you're comfortable flashing 2.2 roms before trying to flash 2.3. In a nutshell you have bootloaders, a kernel, and a rom that all have to be flashed. Do plenty of reading before you go down that road. Happy trails!
I know this forum is for those who have ROOTED or requesting assistance to ROOT. This more of a basic question because I have a Cappy thru work and I do not dare ROOT/FLASH my phone....
Long story short: has AT&T pushed 2.2 out yet? I sure haven't seen it and I've been doing a check every 24 hours. I was just wondering if my phone is jacked, because I haven't gotten the newest Market, either! (I sure would like to watch my NETFLIX like my Verizon friends do.....)

Right, I understand that - but when I go and "force" my phone to look for updates, AT&T says there are none.
I just restored back to factory settings hoping to be able to get an updated load from AT&T and of course, nothing.
You're doing it wrong. If you bother to check AT&T or Samsung's website (or any forum post that announced 2.2 for the Captivate) you'll see that 2.2 is only available through Kies. Check with them and follow their instructions. Pro tip: Kies only works with 32-bit Windows.
I've got a question for those already in 2.3.4 (KH3). Is there a lot of difference between that and stock att froyo? (has KH3 been stable?) I've been in 2.2 and never thought about changing it but now I'm seeing my phone start to hang a little bit. Its becoming slow when opening some apps or the browser.
I have been reading in the XDA forums and seem to have an idea how to upgrade to KH3. Can I see a speed and battery improvement with the upgrade to GB? Or should I just wait for ATT or a leaked 2.3.5?
Thanks !
PS: FYI, tell me if this looks good:
-Do a OneclickOdin for bootloaders from Cezar first
-Do a OneclickOdin for Stock I897UCKH3 with boog_kh3_kernel3, NO Bootloaders
Any recommendation would be appreciated. Thanks to all!

leaked 2.3.5 is already out. and you shouldnt need to do 2 flashes, just a odin with the firmware and bootloaders

Thanks, I will probably do flashing as you said. I just thought that if I did it the other way it would be easier to flash victory rom that requires that kernel. But ill prob just stay in KH3 stock.
Did you upgrade? Do you see a difference in performance / battery? I have seen 2.3.5 but these are not for captivate specifically, correct? these are for i9000? I want to upgrade to something for the captivate.

Thanks again for your help
I thought you had planned on saying stock 2.3.x and thats why i recommended doing it with one flash. if you wanted to go to a rom i can see why you would do it in 2 flashes.
but yes i have been on 2.3 since the first leak, i am currently on 2.3.5 mosaic VII which is my favorite. I was on 2.3.4 apex for awhile, and when upgrading to the new 2.3.5 apex ran into a wifi problem. after that i went back to mosaic.
the battery on mosaic has been great, one 2.3.4 apex it was great also. and yes the 2.3.5 leak is i9000. i can understand wanting to stay on a captivate release, which is very good, but the i9000 release may even be smoother
Thanks for the info Crimson. I actually (after reading all the options in XDA) decided to go for it. It was very easy. I decided to go with the one click odin of 2.3.5 stock. As easy as connect, click start and done.
So far I've been very happy, my phone seems more responsive which is what i was looking for (although it might have to do with the restore to factory settings I did). Battery life is slightly (need more time to test), better. But I can see at the end of the day a 5-10% improvement. So far so good and smooth. Thanks for the help! Now I just need root to get rid of ATT crap.....
