Since I've been content with 6.4 I haven't looked at Gingerbread-based ROMs. On the whole, are developers needing to modify their apps to work with GB, or are Froyo-friendly apps generally also GB-friendly?

i believe most 2.2 apps are pretty friendly with 2.3, i know i had to grab the stock email app from 2.2 because for whatever reason the 2.3 app wouldnt sync my school email and it worked fine. im not real sure though, mosaic III ran real well for me, a bunch of my apps were broken with obsession, so far so good on VII. ill put it through its paces one my restore finishes

not that i know of, at least for the most part. ive yet to have an app from froyo not work on GB, personally.
Thanks. Some of my apps have had recent updates and the description spoke of working better with Gingerbread. That's what made me curious.
P.S. A belated "best wishes" for Tuscaloosa folks.
ive had a much smoother experience with 2.3.3. in some apps, mainly games, sometimes it would get quite jerky, and it still does from time to time, but it really does seem smoother to me and i dont think im making that up
and thanks, i was down there the other day and its insane, it doesnt look like a whole lot of cleanup has been done but i know it has
and then the only minus i have found so far is that it doesnt have the overscrolling effect from 2.3 yet, but most other 2.3.3 roms do so im sure it will come soon
What about the "charging bug" I've read about (several variations of how it manifests itself). Any of you affected by it? If so, what happens in your case? Is it a real PITA or a minor annoyance?

what charging bug are you talking about?
i havent experienced any, or that i am aware of, on mosaic, and didnt stay on obsession long enough to find out

yeah im not sure what charging bug your referring to either. havent had any type of problem at all with it as of yet
i just read through that and never experienced any of it. my battery is better than it has ever been, and ive never unplugged it and had it low, if im not mistaken its always been at 100 or 99
Awesome! I had been running GR 12, and had been having a few minor issues here and there and was thinking of going back to Serendipity, but so glad this is out. Downloading now.
I've been a fan of Assonance and Serendipity in all their iterations. Regarding VII, I'm going to wait 'til the dust settles some more (a day or two...or more). Invariably the first release is a simply a more widely adopted public beta. Nothing wrong with that, but I also want to see if subsequent releases such as 7.01, etc. can be patched as minor incrementals to the initial ROM adoption rather than requiring a more involved procedure. Plus, I'm procrastinating because the upgrade is the easy part. Its the customization (making it my own) phase that's a real PITA and requires time and patience.

i had originally planned on doing this, mainly because i had just found a new theme i liked for mosaic, but i got the itch to try something new. its inevitable that there will be updates the first few days after a rom comes out
ok so far im only just finding one problem. charged my phone overnight, unplugged this morning. my battery is now 78%, but the battery icon is still showing its at 100% full charge. the "100%" is not on the battery symbol, but the battery doesnt drain(visually). luckily i have the battery info widget so i can see the real %..

Now you've experienced what I pointed out above. Plus, these two posts from the VII forum:
"Battery charge weirdness. The same thing that others have reported with GB ROMs, I'll charge to full, then unplug and be instantly at 85%. If I then replug, I can get to 98%. This may actually just be a reporting issue and the battery IS fully charged, just showing the wrong number. And, yes, I've done two cycles and wiped stats, etc."
= = = = = = = = = =
"Also, i experienced the well known 'Android OS' battery drain bug overnight. Before i went to sleep, the battery level was at 28%, and should've been above 20% when i woke up, but the phone was dead. I checked and 'Android OS' was using 23% battery with 90min usage, second only to Display. When i went to sleep 'android os' was only at a few percent. I should also mention the phone was flashed with a fully charged battery. I have screenshots if needed. I've experienced the same battery drain about 5 times over a month's period with GR as well so this isn't anything new, and i've done enough reading to know this bug affects all i9000 based GB roms. I realize this isn't a Serendipity specific bug, but i thought i'd mention it."

Yay! I have been checking for a new update weekly. 6.4 has been doing pretty well for me, but I am jonesing for a new ROM! Gonna reatrain myself for a few days first though to let the dust settle like someone else suggested. *invoking will power *

ah yes, didnt know what you meant, but it seems i am. i also did a couple cycles and wiped battery stats. also i notice, the first overnight charge i did on S7 the other night (i forgot to mention this earlier), i charged it to 100%, while turned, and i was using it. before i went to sleep, i turned the phone off, charger still plugged in (still at 100%), woke up the next morning, unplugged it, turned it on, and it was at 84%...which makes no sense at all lol
There are three things that are keeping me from adopting 7 right now. WiFi connection wonkiness, widgets that are not sticking, and the charge reporting problem. To be fair, I don't know how widespread any of them are. Additionally, I don't know whether they're custom ROM manifestations, or if they're sufficiently embedded within GB as to preclude being addressed by the devs. I've adopted a wait and see attitude.
how is this different from 6.4 besides that its 2.3.3? wheres the changelog?
there wont be a changelog from 6.4 to VII, because 6.4 is a final version. and for the most part 2.3.3 and what comes with that is the only major difference

day two with Serendipity7, and so far, still liking it. I may try the Talon kernel, but that wont be until next week. I calibrated the battery, and seems to be doing pretty good. Netflix is running great. Over all, im happy with it, especially being so fresh.
Also tested a theme and works for the most part, the power menu is missing an icon but everything else seems to work.

Wifi connection wonkiness? what exactly do you mean by that? I just flashed s7 and everything is fine except that I do notice that my wifi signal strength icon is always at the minimum (just the small dot and no bars) eventhough the connection is fine. Anybody else have the same problem?

my wifi bars are doing the same. sitting at my desk, my wireless router merely within arms reach, and still only 1 bar.
There has been some success reported after a modem swap-out. JL2, JK4 for example - depending on your location. Of course, select the Gingerbread flavor of these modems for Serendipity 7.

I will only get this rom until they have coloured "Settings" menu. I'm very picky about that. Also.....I forgot how to flash a rom. Also it might be better to wait maybe after the next 2 updates or something. lol.

Started using the phone yesterday, got 3/4 of the day on only 20% battery life. today, ive had it on for aout 6 hours, constantly using it, down to 88%. This build is WAY better then the stock one. No wireless issues. Using JL2 modem, getting HSDPA just about everywhere without a single issue. Very happy with this phone
3) I use Titanium backup normally to restore, but there's been several reports that people have fewer problems when doing fresh installs from the market, so with one exception (one dinky little flashlight app that I've stopped updating from the market a few dozen versions ago), I've been slogging through manual installs and configuring.
Verdict thus far:
Screaming fast and smooth with Launcher Pro. Seriously - and I was coming from Serendipity 6.4, which was a pretty amazing ROM.
Wifi is fast (haven't been toggling, so can't speak to that issue yet) even though the signal looks weaker than it should be in the notification bar. No issues with dropping.
Made a test call to myself from google. No connection issues, though it's hard to really determine call quality talking to yourself Yeah, I could have called a real second human, but I didn't want to start a conversation that might take away from my geek fest. By tomorrow I should be ready to deal with that.
Did get the "black screen" issue after answering a call on the phone. A quick swipe of the finger across the light sensor restored the screen, as previously reported. Not a biggie.
More to follow as I get more real world use. For now it's back to the restores (Precious ... my Precious ...).

For the record, today, I had my first 'wifi wonkiness'. I had to turn off wifi, it wasn't working in the gym, for some reason. when I tried to turn it back on, I got 'Error' and couldn't - until I rebooted the phone.
The only widgets that don't 'stick' are on my Widgetlocker lockscreen. I think Kevin is going to have to issue some kind of an update to Widgetlocker to fix it.
I have yet to experience the charging issues being reported. But I'm not constantly fiddling and 'testing' as some seem to be obsessed with doing. Toggling wifi until it breaks just isn't something I'm going to bother with.
So, I have to say, I am very happy with the switch to Serendipity VII. The battery life is much better, the phone is zippier (I really see no need for OC/UV anyways, but now, it's just not worth bothering with, many are reporting), I'm on Build #3 of the kernel, I did switch out the modem for JK4, life is good
